Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which movie is about a chance meeting between Guy Haines and Bruno Anthony that has deadly results?

Answer: Strangers on a Train

"Strangers on a Train" was released in 1951, and stars Farley Granger and Robert Walker as two strangers who meet on a train, and playfully discuss swapping murders. Hitchcock's daughter Patricia plays a supporting role as Senator Morton's younger daughter Barbara. She would play supporting characters in three of her father's films: "Stage Fright", "Strangers on a Train", and "Psycho".
2. What movie has Melanie Daniels and Mitch Brenner running for cover?

Answer: The Birds

"The Birds" (1963) stars Tippi Hedren and Rod Taylor as inhabitants of Bodega Bay, the site of seemingly random but deadly bird attacks. The movie is unique in that it has no music: Hitchock relies solely on the action, the dialogue, and the sounds of the birds to create the desired tension. Jessica Tandy, who would later win an Oscar for the title role in "Driving Miss Daisy", plays Rod Taylor's mother Lydia Brenner.
3. In what movie do T. R. Devlin and Alicia Huberman spy on Alexander Sebastian?

Answer: Notorious

In "Notorious" (1946), the daughter of a convicted Nazi becomes an American agent, and marries one of her father's friends in order to uncover the secrets of his spy ring. It was the second of three movies that Ingrid Bergman would make with Alfred Hitchcock.

She had previously worked with the director on "Spellbound" (1945) and would go on to star in "Under Capricorn" (1949). Cary Grant plays Devlin, and Claude Rains gives an Oscar-nominated performance as the sympathetic villain Alexander Sebastian.
4. What movie has L. B. Jeffries and Lisa Fremont suspecting Lars Thorwald of murder?

Answer: Rear Window

"Rear Window" (1954) is the story of a wheelchair-bound photographer who passes the time by watching his neighbors through the window. He begins to think one of them has committed a murder. Jimmy Stewart and Grace Kelly star as the photographer and his society girlfriend, and Raymond Burr, who would later portray television detective Perry Mason, plays villain Lars Thorwald.
5. In what movie does Marion Crane spend a memorable evening with Norman Bates?

Answer: Psycho

Of course! Possibly Alfred Hitchcock's most famous movie, "Psycho" was released in 1960 and stars Janet Leigh as a working girl who steals $40,000. She is murdered by a mysterious motel owner (Anthony Perkins) before she can return it. To create the famous shower scene, Hitchcock used a cassaba melon to replicate the sounds of stabbing flesh and chocolate sauce for the blood.
6. In what movie does Eve Gill secretly spy on Charlotte Inwood, in an attempt to clear her friend Jonathan Cooper of murder?

Answer: Stage Fright

In "Stage Fright" (1950), an acting student (Jane Wyman) hides a friend who is wanted for murder, and goes undercover in an attempt to implicate the person she believes is the real killer (Marlene Dietrich). In later years, Hitchcock said that his use of the false flash-back scene at the beginning of the movie was a mistake and the reason the film did not fare well with audiences.
7. In what movie is John "Scottie" Ferguson fascinated with mysterious Madeleine Elster and saucy Judy Barton?

Answer: Vertigo

Claimed by many to be Alfred Hitchcock's masterpiece, "Vertigo" (1958) is ranked #61 on the AFI's list of 100 Greatest Movies. The movie concerns a retired detective (played by Jimmy Stewart) and his obsession with both the mysterious woman he has been hired to follow, and the woman who looks just like her. Kim Novak plays the dual role of Madeleine/Judy. Hitchcock had wanted Vera Miles to play the part, but she was pregnant and was unable to do the film.
8. In which movie is Mark Halliday the cause of trouble in Tony and Margot Wendice's unhappy marriage?

Answer: Dial M for Murder

"Dial M for Murder" (1954) was adapted from a successful stage play by Frederick Knott. It stars Ray Milland as an ex-tennis player who arranges to have his unfaithful wife (Grace Kelly) killed, so that he can inherit her money. It is the only movie that director Alfred Hitchcock filmed in 3D.
9. What movie showcases a few days in the lives of Charlie Newton and her uncle Charlie Oakley?

Answer: Shadow of a Doubt

"Shadow of a Doubt" (1943) is about a girl (Teresa Wright) and her family enjoying a visit from their favorite uncle (Joseph Cotten), unaware that he is a serial killer wanted by the police. Alfred Hitchcock always claimed that this movie was his favorite of all his films, because he loved the idea of evil lurking just beneath the surface in an idyllic small town. American playwright Thornton Wilder contributed to the script.
10. In what movie do Sam Marlowe, Jennifer Rogers, Captain Wiles, and Miss Gravely have quite an unusual day?

Answer: The Trouble with Harry

The trouble with Harry is that he is dead, and nobody can decide what to do with him! This atypical Hitchcock comedy was released in 1955 and stars John Forsythe, Shirley MacLaine (in her film debut), Edmund Gwenn (Kris Kringle in the original "Miracle on 34th Street"), and Mildred Natwick, as four people who spend the day burying Harry and digging him back up again. Jerry Mathers, who would later portray the title role on television's "Leave it to Beaver", plays the role of Shirley MacLaine's character's son.
