Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What film gave us Ben Affleck, Gwyneth Paltrow, and Tony Goldwyn?

Answer: Bounce

A man (Affleck) gives his seat on a plane to another man (Goldwyn), but the plane crashes, killing Goldwyn's character. Out of guilt, Affleck's character checks up on the other man's widow (Paltrow)- and ends up falling in love with her.
Paltrow and Affleck were romantically linked when they made "Shakespeare in Love" together, co-starring Joe Fiennes. But by the time they made "Bounce", they were no longer an item. "Duets" featured Paltrow teamed up to sing karaoke music with Huey Lewis, and "Ghost" gave us Goldwyn menacing Demi Moore and Patrick Swayze.
2. Which film starred Michael Keaton, Morgan Freeman, and Kathy Baker?

Answer: Clean and Sober

This story of a slick hustler who enters rehab to escape his life, only to end up with a new one, won Michael Keaton the National Society of Film Critics Awards for 1988. Freeman starred in "Hard Rain" with Christian Slater (with whom he had previously worked in "Robin Hood"), and "Misery" starred Kathy Bates, not Kathy Baker.
3. Which movie starred, among others, Richard Lewis, Amanda Plummer, and Faye Dunaway?

Answer: Drunks

This dark film about a meeting in a church basement, and the regular attendees of this meeting, was notable for its remarkable ensemble cast, including Dunaway, Parker Posey, Calista Flockart, Howard E. Rollins, Sam Rockwell, Dianne Weist and others.
Dunaway starred in "Albino Alligator" with Matt Dillon, as well as "Barfly" with Mickey Rourke. ("Albino Alligator" was directed by Kevin Spacey.) Amanda Plummer was in "Pulp Fiction" with John Travolta, Samuel L. Jackson, Tim Roth, Uma Thurman, Bruce Willis and others, and is the daughter of actor Christopher Plummer.
4. Here's one about an oldie but goodie. What film has Jack Lemmon, Lee Remick, and Jack Klugman?

Answer: Days of Wine and Roses

Remick and Lemmon starred in this sad, but ultimately hopeful, tale of a young couple who find their marriage cannot survive the problems they both have. Remick, who tragically lost her struggle with cancer in 1991 was in "The Omen" with Gregory Peck. Though Lemmon starred in both "The Odd Couple" and "Some Like it Hot", the only film that features all three is "Days of Wine and Roses".

Interestingly, Klugman would go on to play Oscar Madison to Tony Randall's Felix Unger in the TV version of "the Odd Couple", while Lemmon starred in the movie version with Walter Matthau.
5. What movie starred Sandra Bullock, Viggo Mortensen, and Steve Buscemi?

Answer: 28 Days

A young woman reluctantly seeks professional help after ruining her sister's wedding.
Mortensen was in "GI Jane" with Demi Moore, as well as the blockbuster "Lord of the Rings" trilogy. Bullock starred in "Two Weeks Notice" with Hugh Grant, and Buscemi was in "Reservoir Dogs" with Harvey Keitel and Michael Madsen. ("Why am I Mr. Pink?")
6. Which Sundance favorite featured Billy Crudup, Holly Hunter, and Denis Leary?

Answer: Jesus' Son

After a tragedy, a young man turns from a life of crime to one of helping others.
Crudup was in "Almost Famous" with Kate Hudson and Patrick Fugit, "The Piano" starred Hunter, Harvey Keitel, and Sam Neil, and "The Ref" featured Leary pitted against Kevin Spacey and Judy Davis.
7. Which film gave us David Caruso, Nicolas Cage, and Samuel L. Jackson?

Answer: Kiss of Death

Caruso plays the unfortunate hero who can't break away from his mob past, no matter how hard he tries. While the critics were less than kind in their reviews of this film, it's become a favorite of mine. A remake of the 1947 film starring Victor Mature and Richard Whidmark, it featured Nic Cage as one of the most intriguing bad guys in memory, an asthmatic mobster scion. Caruso was in "Jade" with Linda Fiorentino (of "Men in Black") and Cage was in "Leaving Las Vegas" with Elizabeth Shue. "The Negoiator" starred Jackson and Kevin Spacey.
8. Which film starred Garry Shandling, Annette Bening, and Greg Kinnear?

Answer: What Planet Are You From?

Though "Love Affair" did feature both Shandling and Bening, that one starred Warren Beatty, who also starred with Bening in "Bugsy". "As Good As It Gets" gave us Kinnear with Jack Nicholson, Helen Hunt and Cuba Gooding, Jr. "What Planet Are You From" was a comedy about an alien who comes to earth in search of a female willing to reproduce.

It didn't win much critical acclaim, but had some amusing moments nonetheless.
9. Which tear-jerker gave us Meg Ryan, Andy Garcia, and Ellen Burstyn?

Answer: When a Man Loves a Woman

Ryan was in "Kate & Leopold" with Hugh Jackman, Garcia starred in "Desperate Measures" with Michael Keaton, and Burstyn was in "Divine Secrets" with Sandra Bullock, James Garner, and Maggie Smith. Al Franken had a small, uncredited role as a co-pilot in "When a Man Loves a Woman", and was also one of the writers of this movie about a commercial airline pilot and his troubled wife.
10. What do all these films, including "28 Days" and "Bounce" have to deal with, that the characters have an addiction to?

Answer: AA

At some point in all of these movies, someone goes to an AA Meeting.
Founded in 1935, Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) has been featured in numerous plots and storylines. Ironically, it seems that as more of Hollywood's elite get into recovery in real life, many of them have chosen to break their own anonymity, perhaps as publicity or possibly as a pre-emptive strike against the tabloids covering their struggle. Regardless of the reasons, no doubt more and more people will continue to be helped by this remarkable program, both on film and in real life. Keep coming back - to this website, that is!
