Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. "The Last of the Mohicans" is a 1992 film based on James Fenimore Cooper's 1826 novel. The main character is a white man, Nathaniel Bumppo, who had been adopted by the Mohican people. Which of the main characters could not be considered to be a Mohican?

Answer: Magua

Magua is a Huron who poses as a Mohawk at the beginning of the film to infiltrate the British forces in an attempt to kill Colonel Munro, whom Magua held responsible for the death of his wife and family. Bumppo's adopted Mohican name is Hawkeye, with Chingachgook being his adopted father and Uncas his adopted brother.

At the film's conclusion following his death at the hands of Magua, Uncas is referred to by his father as "the last of the Mohicans."
2. "Little Big Man" is a 1970 film starring Dustin Hoffman as a white child adopted by the Cheyenne. The film follows him as he moves back and forth between Cheyenne society and white society. Played by Chief Dan George, what is the name of Little Big Man's adopted Cheyenne father figure?

Answer: Old Lodge Skins

George, who is a chief of the Tsleil-Waututh Nation of British Columbia, earned an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actor for his role as the philosophical Old Lodge Skins. Perhaps his best line comes at the end of the film when he says about his failure to die at will, "Sometimes the magic works and sometimes it doesn't."
3. "Thunderheart" is a 1992 film loosely based on actual events on a reservation in the 1970s. Ray Lavoi, an FBI agent whose father was a Sioux, is assigned to a reservation in South Dakota to investigate a murder. Who is the murder suspect that the FBI is attempting to apprehend at the film's outset?

Answer: Jimmy Looks Twice

Walter Crow Horse is the tribal policeman and Leo Fast Elk is the murder victim. Thunderheart is a legendary warrior who was killed at the original massacre at Wounded Knee in 1890 and is portrayed in the film as an ancestor of investigator Lavoi.
4. "Dances With Wolves" is a 1990 release about a Union officer in the Civil War who is stationed on the American frontier and eventually is adopted among a Lakota band. Who is the Lakota elder whom Dunbar at first calls "the quiet one" and who eventually becomes Dunbar's mentor and eventually gives his approval for Dunbar's marrying Stands With A Fist?

Answer: Kicking Bird

Wind In His Hair is the warrior who befriends Dunbar, while Ten Bears is the chief of the band and Otter is one of the boys who tried to steal Dunbar's horse.
5. "Cheyenne Autumn" is a 1964 film portraying the 1878-9 attempt of the Northern Cheyenne to leave a reservation in Oklahoma and return to their ancestral lands in Wyoming. Who are the two Cheyenne chiefs who lead the attempt?

Answer: Little Wolf and Dull Knife

Cochise and his father-in-law Mangas Coloradas were Apaches, while Red Cloud and Crazy Horse were Sioux. Black Hawk was a Sauk (Sac) chief who fought the United States in a war named after him in the 1830s, while Blue Jacket was a Shawnee who inflicted the greatest defeat in history on an American force by Native Americans. "Cheyenne Autumn" was the last Western ever directed by John Ford.
6. "Geronimo: An American Legend" is a 1993 Columbia Pictures release starring Wes Studi as Geronimo and portraying the efforts of the U.S. Army to capture the Apache warrior for the last time. What is the name of the Chiricahua scout who played the largest role in leading the Army's Lt. Gatewood to Geronimo for his final surrender?

Answer: Chato

For his service to the Army in helping "capture" Geronimo, Chato and all the other Chiricahuas who cooperated with the Army were forced to surrender their guns and join the rest of their tribesmen in prison in Florida.
7. "Last of the Dogmen" is a 1995 Western about a band of Cheyenne who escaped the 1864 Sand Creek Massacre and disappeared into the Oxbow region of the wilds of Montana for over 120 years, only to be discovered by a bounty hunter and an anthropologist, inadvertently threatening the lost band's discovery by the modern world. Who is the leader of the warriors who brings the whites back to his village?

Answer: Yellow Wolf

In the film's climactic moment, Yellow Wolf shoots a bundle of TNT with an arrow, setting off an explosion that seals the passageway between the white man's world and the world of the last Cheyenne Dog Soldiers. There was an actual Cheyenne warrior named Yellow Wolf who died in the Sand Creek Massacre.

There was also a Nez Perce warrior named Yellow Wolf who revealed the ways of life of his people to a white man named Lucullus McWhorter over a span of 28 years for a book called "Yellow Wolf: His Own Story."
8. "Windtalkers" is a 2002 film about two Navajo "code talkers" in the World War II battle of Saipan. Which of the two Navajos survives the battle?

Answer: Ben Yahzee

In the story, both code talkers are paired with whites whose job it is to make sure the Navajos are not captured by the enemy, which would threaten the effectiveness of the Navajo code. As Whitehorse is being dragged away, Yahzee's protector is forced to kill Whitehorse and his captors with a grenade. Later, Yahzee is wounded but is saved by his protector, played by Nicolas Cage, who is killed. Eventually, Yahzee returns home to his Navajo homeland.
9. "Smoke Signals" is a 1998 "coming-of-age" story about Victor Joseph, a young reservation Indian who travels from Idaho to Phoenix, Arizona, to retrieve the ashes of his dead father. What is the name of Victor's bosom buddy, who accompanies him on the journey and discovers himself, as well?

Answer: Thomas Builds-the-Fire

Like the writings of Sherman Alexie, who wrote the film's screenplay, "Smoke Signals" also deals with typical problems of reservation life, including alcoholism and domestic violence. The story is based on an Alexie short story, "This is What it Means to Say Phoenix, Arizona."
10. "A Man Called Horse" is a 1970 release about an English noble who is captured by Sioux and enslaved, but eventually rises to the position of respected warrior and marries the chief's sister. What is the name of woman he marries?

Answer: Running Deer

The climax of this film occurs in the reenacting of the Sun Dance, a Plains ritual involving self torture. It is through this ceremony that Horse completes his transformation as a Sioux after killing two enemy warriors in an attack on his village.
