Answer: The Shawhank Redemption

'The Shawshank Redemption' (1994) directed by Frank Darabont was based on the 1982 novella 'Rita Hayworth and Shawshank Redemption' by Stephen King. Andy Dufresne (Tim Robbins) is incarcerated for the murder of his wife and her lover. A murder he never committed. Morgan Freeman played the role of Ellis 'Red' Redding, the go-to man in prison.

The film was nominated for seven Academy awards, including Best Actor (Freeman) but failed to win any.

Answer: Seven

'Seven' ('Se7en') is a 1995 David Fincher directed crime thriller. Two detectives, Brad Pitt and Morgan Freeman are on the hunt for a serial killer (Kevin Spacey) who uses the seven deadly sins as a recurring theme.

The movie scored only one Academy nomination, for Best Film, but lost to 'Apollo 13'.

'Olympus Has Fallen' is a 2013 movie about a terrorist attack on the White House in which the President (Aaron Eckhart) is taken prisoner and the Vice President (Phil Austin) is killed. Morgan Freeman is the Speaker of the House who is the Acting President during the siege.

The movie won critics reviews for the acting and direction (by Antoine Faqua), but panned the violence. The movie franchise sequels 'London Has Fallen' was released in 2016 and 'Angel Has Fallen' in mid-2019.

'Batman Begins' (starring Christian Bale as Batman) directed by Christopher Nolan, is a darker version of the previous 'Batman' movies and explores the journey of Bruce Wayne into the Caped Crusader. Morgan Freeman played Lucius Fox, a Wayne Enterprises employee who supplies Batman with his numerous gadgets. Rachel Dawes (Katie Holmes) is Batman's love interest, but despite him getting the criminals, he didn't get the girl.

Note: In 'Batman Begins', Falcone is pronounced fal-cone-y, but in the other Batman movies it is pronounced fal-cone.

'Transcendence' is a 2013 sci-fi thriller in which the development of a sentient AI causes anti-technology groups to riot. Brad Pitt is Dr Will Caster who develops the AI, and whose consciousness is uploaded into a computer after he is shot with a polonium-laced bullet. Morgan Freeman is a scientist working with the FBI to try and stop Caster by infecting him with a virus.

In the 1989 version of 'Driving Miss Daisy', Jessica Tandy is the wealthy Miss Daisy whose son (Dan Aykroyd) prohibits her from driving and hires a chauffeur, Hoke (Morgan Freeman). Miss Daisy is reluctant to give up her independence and freedom and is reluctant to accept Hoke's services.

Set against a background of racial discrimination and anti-Semitism, this powerful yet uplifting film won four Oscars, including Best Picture and Best Actress. Despite Morgan Freeman winning the Golden Globe for best Actor, he didn't win the Oscar, losing out to Daniel Day-Lewis in 'My Left Foot'.

In this 1997 Gary Fleder directed adaptation of James Patterson's novel 'Kiss the Girls', Morgan Freeman stars as Detective and Forensic Psychologist Alex Cross. When Cross's niece goes missing, he learns that she is one of many and he becomes involved in the search for the perpetrator.
The movie did not impress the critics or the Academy Awards and the movie failed to gain any meaningful nominations. In 2001, Freeman reprised the role of Dr Alex Cross in 'Along Came a Spider'.

'Invictus' (2009) was a biographical drama based on John Carlin's book 'Playing the Enemy: Nelson Mandela and the Game That Made a Nation'. When Nelson Mandela (Morgan Freeman) becomes President, he has concerns about the racial divisions in South Africa and the potential for violence. With South Africa set to host the 1995 Rugby World Cup he hits upon the game as a way of uniting the people.

Morgan Freeman and co-star Matt Damon were nominated for acting Oscars but unfortunately were beaten for their respective gongs.

Answer: Deep Impact

'Deep Impact', released in 1998, is a disaster movie about a large asteroid on a collision course with Earth. Elijah Wood is a student who is jointly credited with discovering the asteroid and Morgan Freeman is the US President. The film also stars Vanessa Redgrave, Tea Leone and Robert Duval.

The movie was not nominated for any Academy Awards, losing out to 'Armageddon' a similar movie released at the same time.
