Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Can you identify the 2011 film by Lebanese director Nadine Labaki? It should appeal to those at a crossroads in their lives.

Answer: Where Do We Go Now?

"Et maintenant on va où?" or "Where Do We Go Now" is the second film by Lebanese director Nadine Labaki. The film is a black comedy set in a remote Middle Eastern village where women of all faiths join together and go to outrageous lengths to find ways to keep the men from learning about religious strife breaking out between Christians and Muslims in the country. Though their antics from hijacking the village radio and television to hiring exotic dancers are hilarious, the film does an excellent job of communicating the religious tensions simmering under the surface.

2. My favourite film is one of this brilliant director's lesser-known movies and stars a future caped resident of Gotham City. Can you identify it?

Answer: Empire of the Sun

Empire of the Sun is a wonderful, yet lesser know Steven Spielberg movie. Based on the J.G.Ballard novel of the same name, this is a coming of age story about a young privileged boy being separated from his parents during the Japanese occupation of the Shanghai International Settlement in WWII. The movie centers on his time in a Japanese internment camp. Brilliant performances by Christian Bale and John Malkovich.

"Hope & Glory" - Director: John Boorman . Another great story about London in WWII, based on the director's own experiences
"Cinderella Man" - Director: Ron Howard. Another amazing performance by Russell Crowe as James J, Braddock, world heavyweight boxing champion.
"Dunkirk" - Director: Christopher Nolan. Brilliant telling of this amazing story.

3. My favourite movie was directed by a New Zealander in 2016. You people will be crazy about this movie too, can you name it?

Answer: Hunt for the Wilderpeople

"Hunt for the Wilderpeople" is a marvellous independent movie starring Sam Neill and Julian Bailey Dennison. It really shows the thinking of the New Zealand people in the simple story of a boy and an old man who hide from the authorities in the wilderness. It is beautifully directed by Taika Waitit, a Maori director, writer and actor. He has directed many quirky films, including "Jojo Rabbit" in 2019. Both the other movies are excellent New Zealand productions.

4. Mike Newell directed this film set mostly on an island during and immediately after World War II, starring Lily James and Michiel Huisman. Can you Channel the quirky and unappetising film title?

Answer: The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society

The film centres around author Juliet Ashton, in postwar London, who travels to Guernsey on learning about "The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society", which was hastily formed in 1941 to cover up an illegal liquor still in German-occupied Guernsey.

The film has some dramatic flashbacks to the war, quirky and interesting characters, and an absorbing mystery regarding Elizabeth, the Society's missing founder and mother of the little girl, Kit. Most of all, it is a love story in a truly beautiful setting in the Channel Islands.

5. Mary would've found the title of this next film, directed by Jonathan Demme, very unsettling. What is it?

Answer: Silence of the Lambs

Unfortunately, the title of this movie belies its true nature. "Silence of the Lambs" is a story about the efforts of a young female FBI agent to solve a string of murders. In the course of the film, we discover that the agent, as a little girl, heard young sheep being slaughtered by a relative of hers. Their cries became a haunting memory throughout her entire life.

Such an experience would have been especially unsettling for Mary of nursery rhyme fame, whose lamb followed her to school.

8. My favorite movie is about a little boy who is visited by ghosts and is convinced that there is only one child psychologist who can help. I have a feeling that a number of players will be able to guess the title. Are you one of them?

Answer: The Sixth Sense

This 1999 thriller starred Haley Joel Osment and Bruce Willis. M. Night Shyamalan wrote and directed the film. He cleverly used the color red every time a ghost would appear in the movie. Most people would probably not notice it on their first viewing. Red could be found in such things as a blanket, shirt, or balloon.

"I see dead people" is perhaps one of the most recognizable movie lines of all time.

9. Madre Mia I've avoided shower curtains and have an aversion to chocolate sauce since watching this 1960 film! What was it?

Answer: Psycho

Alfred Hitchcock was so eager to film Robert Bloch's book "Psycho" that when Paramount Studio was reluctant to finance it he financed the film himself, while Paramount provided the distribution. The relatively low budget led to it being filmed in black and white and chocolate syrup was determined to give the best depiction of blood for the famous shower slashing scene. Hitchcock waived his usual director's fee in return for a 60% stake in the film negative: a good choice.
