Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Sam Loomis has just returned from the Bates Motel in an attempt to find Arbogast, the detective searching for Sam's missing girlfriend, Marion. In his hardware store, as he approaches a waiting Lila Crane, Marion's sister, he learns that there has been no word from Arbogast. He tells Lila there is no one at the Bates house except an old woman who won't answer the door. Which uneasy word does Sam use to describe this woman?

Answer: sick

Sam uses the phrase, "Sick old woman, unable to answer the door, or unwilling." Sam and Lila realize that something is terribly out of sorts. There is all sorts of wind in Lila's hair as she watches Sam leave from the front of the store.
2. Sam feels that Arbogast may have not come back from the Bates Motel after getting a lead and going off to act on it. Lila disagrees and reminds Sam that Arbogast contacted them when he wasn't getting anywhere with Norman Bates. What is the confirming statement Lila makes regarding Arbogast's telephone conversation?

Answer: "He called when he had nothing but a dissatisfied feeling."

Arbogast tells Lila on the phone that he thinks he is going back to the motel after learning that Norman has a sick old mother. He believes this mother knows about Marion. Dissatisfaction leads the detective to his disagreeable death.
3. Sam and Lila go to see Al Chambers, the sheriff, and his wife. The Chambers are astonished and perplexed to hear Sam say that he saw an old woman in the window of the Bates house. Initially, Sam mentions Mrs. Bates and Mrs. Chambers has an idea about this. What question does she ask Sam?

Answer: "Norman took a wife?"

The Chambers try to explain to Sam and Lila that Mrs. Bates died a terrible death and is buried. Mrs. Chambers even recalls that her burial dress is periwinkle blue. Sam and Lila attempt to refute this fact because Arbogast saw this woman in the window too and Norman refused him entrance into the house to confront her.

At that point, none of them realize that the woman is actually a corpse.
4. Al Chambers tells Lila and Sam the shocking story of how Mrs. Bates and the man she loved died a horrible death. He also mentions the area where Mrs. Bates is buried. What it the name of her resting place?

Answer: Greenlawn Cemetery

Al's statement to Lila and Sam is: "Well, if the woman up there is Mrs. Bates, then who's that woman buried out there in Greenlawn Cemetery?" All that bad business in the movie happened 10 years ago, which would put it around 1950. (The movie's setting is 1960, the year it was made.) Lila too, is sure something is wrong out there.
5. Sam tells Al Chambers that Lila is searching for her sister and that a detective is involved who found the Bates Motel. The sheriff becomes curious as to how long Lila's sister has been gone. Lila explains that Marion left Phoenix one week ago without a trace. Sheriff Chambers then makes an analysis about the situation. What does he say to Lila?

Answer: "Your sister's not so much missing as she's run away."

Sheriff Chambers tells Lila at the church later on that she should file a report. He says that he knows Sam is not the 'seeing illusions' type. Sheriff Chambers is investigating Marion Crane's disappearance, so he does not say she was smart for running away. That wouldn't make him very wise, would it? Marion and runaways both travel highways that lead them to destinations that are life risks.
6. Arbogast, the detective, has lost his life in the Bates house. Norman now ponders in his office what will come next. He proceeds to his house and trots up the stairs to have a chilling discussion with his mother. He wants to move her but she fights him on the idea. What does he plead to Mrs. Bates to get her out of her room?

Answer: "He came for the girl, now someone will come for him."

Norman is referring to Arbogast and Marion both being missing. Thinking his mother committed the crimes, he needs to get her out of sight so she isn't put away "someplace". He suggests taking her to the fruit cellar and her retort is: "You think I'm fruity, huh?" Norman didn't plan on her body being found in the climax.
7. Lila and Sam get anxious and head out to the Bates Motel after Sheriff Chambers comes up with nothing himself. They pose as man and wife and, after Norman is out of the way, start searching the cabin where Marion was killed. Sam notices that the shower has no curtain but Lila finds something more important in the toilet. What does she say is on the unflushable piece of paper that Sam is looking at?

Answer: "some figure that has been added to or subtracted"

The figure is added to or subtracted from the 40,000 dollars just before Marion steps into the bathroom. Los Angeles is on a newspaper that Marion notices in the office and uses for her hometown. The time and date is not recorded by Marion. Can you take a stab at what time it may have been that her killer enters the bathroom? (This was not noted in the movie, just a little brain exercise you can do.)
8. Lila is determined to question Mrs. Bates in the house behind the motel. She and Sam devise a plan for her to sneak around the back of the motel while Sam distracts Norman with a conversation. Sam starts out doing most of the talking and remarks on Norman being alone. Sam says it would drive him crazy. What profound response does Norman give Sam?

Answer: "That would be a rather extreme reaction."

Sam assures Norman that his comment is just an expression. Sam is trying to get Norman to admit that he had something to do with Marion's disappearance and the money. Norman gets tired of the third degree and tells Sam to get in his car and drive away from there.
9. Norman retreats back into the parlor as Sam threatens to confront his mother about the money and Marion. Norman soon notices that Lila has probably taken off up the hill to his house. What panicky question does Norman sharply ask Sam about Lila?

Answer: "Where's that girl that came with you?"

Too late, Norman! Lila has already gone through the entire upstairs and is headed out till she sees Norman frantically running up to the house. This is after he knocks Sam out cold in the parlor. Norman can't let her find his mother. Lila then hides in the bottom stairs and notices the fruit cellar. She is one curious cat!
10. Lila makes her way down the cellar steps and through two doors. She notices an old woman in a rocking chair. Feeling a sense of closure, Lila approaches this individual and makes a shocking discovery. What is her alarming response?

Answer: She screams.

That piercing scream is almost identical to Marion's in the shower. As Lila touches the rocking chair, it mysteriously seems to rotate around all on its own. Lila finally thinks she has found Mrs. Bates but she only finds what is left of her; a decomposed skeleton. Norman then appears to claim another victim. Sam follows, exposing Norman's mother disguise and lunacy.
