Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Don Lynch, a Titanic historian, and Ken Marschall, a historian and painter, each portray a historical person in this film. Who did they each portray? (Please pick the answer that matches the order that the question is asked; first Don Lynch's character, then Ken Marschall's.)

Answer: Thomas Andrews, J. Bruce Ismay

If you look carefully during scenes that include "ghosts" from the past, you'll definitely see Don and Ken in their portrayals of Andrews and Ismay. They are also credited with these roles in the film.
2. Of the 4 people listed below who went on James Cameron's "Ghosts" expedition, only one of them did not have a role in his 1997 film "Titanic". Which person did not have a role in that film?

Answer: Lori Johnston

Dr. Lori Johnston is a microbiologist who went on the "Ghosts" expedition to study the rusticles that now cover most of the wreck. Lewis Abernathy played Lewis Bodine, the man seen with Brock Lovett (played by Bill Paxton), who also gave his "fine forensic analysis" of the ship's sinking to the old Rose. Judy Prestininzi played an uncredited role as a praying woman in the 1997 film.

In the 2003 documentary she played Margaret "Molly" Brown. James Cameron had two roles in his 1997 film: in one scene, we see only his hands.

This, of course, is the scene where Jack Dawson (Leonardo DiCaprio) is drawing the picture of Rose (Kate Winslet). His second role is an uncredited role as a steerage dancer.
3. On Disc 2 of "Ghosts of the Abyss", there is a hidden special feature. It can be accessed from the menu by highlighting what area?

Answer: The regulator handles of the Marconi wireless machine

On Disc 2, the menu has a background which is the Silent Room, one of the wireless rooms on board Titanic. The handles of the regulators are still in the position that the junior wireless operator, Harold Bride, left them as he tried to harness more power from the motor as the ship sank. Once highlighted, you'll be able to find a surprise special feature.
4. According to superstition, what do you never do on a ship?

Answer: whistle

Bill Paxton had this so-called "bad habit". According to the superstition, whistling summons the winds. Leaning over the rails might not be a good idea either (at least in rough weather).
5. What type of sandwich did James Cameron eat on the dives to the wreck?

Answer: Cheese with butter

The answer to this question can be found in the hidden special feature on disc two.
6. How many dives did Bill Paxton make?

Answer: 4

Bill says he made four dives during this expedition, in one of the special features on disc two. Despite some obvious displays of nervousness, he seemed to enjoy his time with Titanic.
7. Which artifact or piece of debris from the list below was not seen or mentioned in "Ghosts of the Abyss".

Answer: the face of a porcelain doll

Ken Marschall noticed the crystal water decanter on the ocean floor during one of the dives. The hatch from the cargo hold is seen on one of the dives. It's on the ocean floor because when the bow of the ship hit the floor, the force of water being pushed outward blew the hatch door off. Louis Abernathy mentions seeing a laced up shoe after one of the dives.

The fact that it was laced up indicates that this is probably where a body fell in 1912. It is a grave marker. The porcelain doll face is seen towards the beginning of the 1997 film, "Titanic".
8. Who were the "cowboys?"

Answer: MIR pilots in training

The "cowboys" were the guys seen jumping from the small boat, the Zodiac, onto the tops of the submersibles to attach and detach the cable system. They were pilots in training, as well as engineers, and part of the MIR crew. They volunteered to do that job, no matter what the sea conditions were.
9. At the end of the expedition, an anonymous plaque was placed on the bow of Titanic.

Answer: False

The plaque was placed on the stern section of the ship. It read "The fifteen hundred souls lost here still speak, reminding us always that the unthinkable can happen, but for our vigilance, humility and compassion." Considering the major event that occured (9-11), these words rang all too true.
10. What event occured that halted the expedition?

Answer: 9 - 11

The attack on the Twin Towers and the Pentagon occured while a dive was going on. The people on that dive were made aware upon their return to the surface. One of the ROV technicians and Charles Pellegrino, a historian and biologist, each had a wife who was in New York at the time of the attack. Both men found out that their wives were safe.
