In fact, Felix and Mary Lee had planned to run away together and were going to do so when the fire that is shown in the opening scene broke out. Mary Lee died in the fire, so Felix became a hermit in his grief. Mattie Darrow had moved on after the end of her relationship with Felix, married someone else, and was now a widow.
6. Which actor/comedian played funeral director Frank Quinn in "Get Low"?

Answer: It is time to start telling the truth.

"Get Low" is set in in the 1930s in the southern US. In the film, the dramatic and tragic fire that opens the movie takes place when Felix is a relatively young man. He then lives on his own in the woods for about 40 years. At that point, he before he goes into town and talks to the local pastor and funeral director because he says that it is time for him to "get low", tell the truth, and settle things from his past.
8. Who started the blaze that was shown in the first scene of the movie?

Answer: Mary Lee Stroup's husband

In Felix's talk with Mattie Darrow when he plans his funeral party, viewers discover the solution to the mysteries surrounding Felix's younger life. Felix was dating Mattie when he was young, but he was actually in love with her married sister Mary Lee Stroup. Felix and Mary Lee had planned to run away together, but when she wasn't at their pre-arranged meeting spot, he went looking for her. That's when he walked into a horrible scene of domestic violence. Mary Lee's husband has beaten her with a hammer.

When Felix showed up, the husband threw a kerosene lamp in an attempt to kill all three of them. Mary Lee's husband also apparently threw Felix out the window. (Felix was the shadowy figure that was ablaze in the first scene.) Both Mary Lee and her husband perished in the fire.
9. Whose picture is placed on Felix's casket?

Answer: Mary Lee Stroup

At the end of the movie, Mattie seems to have forgiven Felix for leaving her with no explanation when they were younger. Shortly after that, Felix sees the ghostly figure of Mary Lee Stroup walking down a lane towards him. He passes away and a small funeral is held for him.

He is buried in a small plot where he has buried his pets over the years. Before dirt is shovelled onto his casket, Mattie places a photo of her sister Mary Lee in Felix's grave. This was a symbol of how she wanted them to be together into eternity.
10. "Get Low" was filmed entirely on location in which southern state?

Answer: Georgia

The movie is reported to be loosely based on actual events that took place in Tennessee in the late 1930s. According to Knox News, Felix Bush in the movie was based on real-life Felix Bushaloo "Uncle Bush" Breazeale who planned his own funeral in Roane County, Tennessee in 1938.

In the movie, it is mentioned that events take place in Tennessee. However, the movie was actually filmed entirely on location in Georgia.
