Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Kirsten Dunst plays the young version of Amy March.

Answer: True

Kirsten Dunst plays young Amy in the first half of the movie. The older Amy we see in the second half of the movie is portrayed by Samantha Mathis.
2. Which March sister refuses to play the character of Rodrigo in the play the girls were staging in their house?

Answer: Amy

Amy, being the 'beatle' that she is, insists she does not want to play a boy's part and wants to be Lady Violet instead. Jo then asks the girls to accept Laurie into their little 'society', and when the girls concede they bow and deem Laurie as 'Sir Rodrigo'!
3. How does Jo meet Laurie, played by Christian Bale, the 'captive' who lives in the house opposite theirs?

Answer: She accidentally sits on his lap when trying to hide away during a party.

This happens during Belle Gardiner's coming-out party, which is the first party the girls have to attend in the movie. Jo is trying to hide the back of her burnt dress and escape from a boy who is pursuing her when she accidentally backs into Laurie. They end up doing a goofy dance together and so the love story ensues.
4. Amy's teacher struck her for the limes she was hiding under her desk. She later informs the family that the teacher also said that educating a woman was as good as what?

Answer: Educating a female cat.

Amy's mother becomes very enraged at this and writes a letter to the teacher, withdrawing Amy from his school. Jo is then put in charge of Amy's homeschooling, much to the dismay of both Amy and Jo!
5. The March girls' mother, played by Susan Sarandon, has to go to help their father who has been injured in the war. What does Jo end up selling to get money to pay for the train ticket?

Answer: Her hair.

Jo was supposed to get the money from her Great-Aunt March, but couldn't bear to ask her, so instead cuts her hair short and sells it for money!
6. What illness does Beth contract from the poor family she is trying to help?

Answer: Scarlett Fever

The saddest part of the movie is when Beth falls ill, almost dies, recovers and then passes away after Jo comes to her side. Hannah informs the girls of the illness that Beth has, and that Amy has to be sent away because unlike Jo and Meg, she did not have it when she was a baby.
7. Jo informs Friedrich, played by Gabriel Byrne, that her family follows what school of thought?

Answer: Transcendentalism

This is in the beginning of their relationship, when she is drying her clothes and papers in his room. It reflects the philosophy behind how the March sisters were raised and how they carried out their day-to-day lives.
8. What is the name of the story that Jo publishes under the name 'Joseph March'?

Answer: The Sinners' Corpse.

Jo is desperate to get one of her stories published and so uses a man's name as a pseudonym. When she shows the story in the newspapers to Friedrich, he criticises it and upsets Jo.
9. At the time when Amy encounters a "much-changed" Laurie in France, which college friend of Laurie's is courting Amy?

Answer: Fred Vaughn

We first meet Fred Vaughn when the March family is celebrating the return of their father from the war, and the gift that Mr. Lawrence has given to Beth. Later, when Laurie chances upon Amy, he accuses Amy of being interested in Fred only for his "bank account".
10. Which March sister does Laurie end up marrying?

Answer: Amy

Laurie proposes to Jo first, his original and true love. Jo refuses him and later, after returning to France to console Amy over Beth's death, he proposes to Amy and marries her.
