Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Bette Davis was nominated for an Oscar 10 times during her career. Which of these roles was she snubbed for?

Answer: Rosa Moline, "Beyond the Forest" (1949)

"What a dump!" - Rosa Moline. This quote is #62 on AFI's 100 movie quotes list.

In "Beyond the Forest" Davis plays Rosa Moline, a housewife bored with her life who cheats on her husband and dreams of life in the big city. It has both melodrama and film noir elements, and following the film code of the era, the morally flawed character Davis plays dies at the end of the film.

Reviews at the time called "Beyond the Forest" both "bombastic melodrama" and "Camp" and it is listed as one of the 100 Most Enjoyably Bad Movies Ever Made according to the Golden Raspberry Awards. It did receive one Academy Award nomination, for Max Steiner's score.

Davis was nominated for "All About Eve" (1950) and "Dark Victory" (1939) and won her second Oscar for "Jezebel" (1938). She won her first for "Dangerous" (1935). Other notable roles include Charlotte Vale in "Now Voyager" (1942) and "Mrs Skeffington" (1944).
2. Ingrid Bergman received six Best Actress nominations. Which of these film roles was not nominated?

Answer: Ilsa Lund, "Casablanca" (1943)

Ingrid Bergman was NOT nominated for Ilsa Lund in "Casablanca". Ilsa is torn between Rick, a former lover, and her husband, the leader of a resistance movement. Major spoiler: In the end, she leaves with her husband.

One of the greatest screenplays of all time, and ranked as the greatest love story of all time by the AFI, "Casablanca" won for Best Picture, Best Director (Michael Curtiz) and Best Screenplay. Humphrey Bogart and Claude Raines were nominated for their acting.

Bergman won her first Oscar for "Gaslight" and her second for "Anastasia". She was nominated for playing Sister Benedict, but lost out to Joan Crawford in "Mildred Pierce" (1945). Bergman also won a Supporting Actress Award for "Murder on the Orient Express" (1974).
3. Katharine Hepburn was nominated 12 times on her way to four Academy Awards. Which role was overlooked by the Academy?

Answer: Amanda Bonner, "Adam's Rib" (1949)

"Adam's Rib" (1949) features Hepburn and Spencer Tracy as married attorneys who face off against each other in the courtroom. It is notable for launching the film careers of Judy Holliday and Jean Hagen. The film's screenplay, by Ruth Gordon and Garson Kanin, was nominated for an Oscar, but none of the actors were.

Hepburn was nominated for playing missionary Rose Sayer in "The African Queen" (1951), Socialite Tracy Lord in "The Philadelphia Story" (1940) and a striving poor girl in "Alice Adams" (1935).

Hepburn's four Oscar wins were for "Morning Glory" (1934), "Guess Who's Coming to Dinner" (1967), "The Lion in Winter" (1968) and "On Golden Pond" (1981).

Other notable nominations include "Woman of the Year" (1942), the first film she did with Spencer Tracy; "Suddenly, Last Summer" (1959) and "Long Day's Journey Into Night" (1962).
4. The legendary Greer Garson was nominated seven times. Which of her roles did not earn an Oscar nomination?

Answer: Paula, "Random Harvest" (1942)

"Random Harvest" (1942) is about an amnesiac who is happily married then regains his memory of his past life; mysteriously, he loses all his memory of his present life. The film is one of the great tear jerkers of all time, with Greer and Ronald Colman in the leads. The film received a total of seven Academy Award nominations, including Colman, Susan Peters and director Mervyn LeRoy, but Garson was not nominated.

Garson won for playing heroic war-time matriarch Kay Miniver in the great British war drama "Mrs Miniver" (1942). She was nominated for Marie Curie and Eleanor Roosevelt, two of the more towering women of the 20th century.

Other films Garson was nominated for include "Goodbye Mr Chips" (1939) in which she played Robert Donat's wife, and "Mrs Parkington" (1944).
5. Audrey Hepburn was nominated five times during her film career. Which of these roles did not earn her an Oscar nomination?

Answer: Eliza Doolittle, "My Fair Lady" (1964)

Despite being the title character, Audrey Hepburn was not nominated for "My Fair Lady". The musical is based on "Pygmalion", and is about a flower girl being trained by a linguistics professor to fit into proper society. The film won eight Academy Awards, including Best Picture, Best Actor for Rex Harrison as Henry Higgins, Best Director for George Cukor, Best Costume Design for Cecil Beaton and Best Score (Andre Previn).

In a further irony, the winner for Best Actress was Julie Andrews in "Mary Poppins" (1964). Andrews had originated the role of Eliza on Broadway, but was replaced with Hepburn in the film. So I guess it worked out for Ms. Andrews.

Hepburn won an Academy Award playing runaway Princess Ann in "Roman Holiday" (1953). She was also nominated for playing the title role in "Sabrina" (1954), where she had Humphrey Bogart and William Holden fighting over her, and for Holly Golightly, a flighty New York party girl who enjoys having breakfast at Tiffany's.

Hepburn was also nominated for "The Nun's Story" (1959) and "Wait Until Dark" (1967).
6. Anne Bancroft had five nominations during the course of her impressive career. Which one of these performances did not receive an Oscar nomination?

Answer: Helene Hanff, "84 Charing Cross Road" (1987)

Bancroft did win a BAFTA Award for "84 Charing Cross Road" (1987), but was not nominated for an Academy Award. The film is based on the book by Helene Hanff, in which she details her relationship with a London bookseller (Anthony Hopkins).

Anne Bancroft won for playing Sullivan, the teacher of Helen Keller, in "The Miracle Worker" (1962). Patty Duke also won for playing Keller. She established the golden standard for all time for cougars as the seductive Mrs. Robinson in "The Graduate" (1968). She was also nominated for "The Pumpkin Eater" (1964), in which she plays a very fertile woman who has a cheating husband.

In 1978, Bancroft would be nominated as Emma Jacklin, a retired ballet dancer, in "The Turning Point" (1977) and in 1986 she would be nominated for "Agnes of God".
7. Jane Fonda is one of the most acclaimed actresses of her generation, winning two Oscars in the 1970s. Which of these roles was not recognized by Academy voters?

Answer: Dr Martha Livingston, "Agnes of God" (1985)

"Agnes of God" did received three Academy Award nominations, but Fonda was not one of them. Fonda plays a doctor who is investigating the mysterious pregnancy of a novitiate (Meg Tilly). Her investigation is stymied by Mother Miriam Ruth (Anne Bancroft). Bancroft and Tilly were both nominated, as was Georges Delerue for the musical score.

Fonda won her first Academy Award as prostitute Bree Daniels in "Klute" (1971) and her second for playing Sally Hyde, the wife of a Vietnam soldier in "Coming Home" (1978).

Fonda was nominated for "Julia" (1977), in which playwright Lillian Wright assists the anti-Nazi resistance in World War II Germany, and for "The China Syndrome" (1979) in which she played a journalist investigating a potential meltdown at a nuclear power plant.

Fonda's first nomination was for "They Shoot Horses, Don't They" (1969). She was also nominated for working with her father in "On Golden Pond" (1981) and for "The Morning After" (1986).
8. Meryl Streep seems to be nominated for everything she is in. But one of these roles was neglected by Oscar voters. Which one?

Answer: Eleanor Shaw, "The Manchurian Candidate" (2004)

Streep recreated Angela Lansbury's character in the 2004 remake of "The Manchurian Candidate". She played Eleanor Shaw, the mother of Raymond Shaw (Liev Scheiber). Denzel Washington played a former army buddy of Shaw investigating a conspiracy. The 2004 remake is not nearly as good as the 1962 original, despite Streep and Washington. Streep was nominated for a Golden Globe, but not an Oscar.

Streep won her second Best Actress award for "The Iron Lady" (2012). She won her first for playing Polish refugee Sophie Zawistowski in "Sophie's Choice" (1982). Streep earned her first Oscar for playing housewife Joanna Kramer in "Kramer vs Kramer" (1979).

She was nominated for "Devil Wears Prada" in which she plays a high powered fashion magazine editor, and "The Bridges of Madison County" for playing a housewife who has an affair with Clint Eastwood.

Other notable performances by Streep include Karen Silkwood in "Silkwood" (1983), Karen Blixen in "Out of Africa" (1985), Julia Child in "Julie and Julia" (2009) and Katharine Graham in "The Post" (2017).
9. Cate Blanchett rose rapidly to become one of Hollywood's hottest stars. But sometimes she gets overlooked. Which role got snubbed by Oscar voters?

Answer: Galadriel, "Lord of the Rings: Return of the King" (2003)

While "The Lord of the Rings: Return of the King" (2003) received 11 Academy Awards, none of the actors in the film was nominated. It did win Best Picture, Best Director (Peter Jackson) and pretty much every technical award under the sun.

Blanchett was in all three films of the "Lord of the Rings Trilogy". The only actor to be nominated was Ian McKellen, for his turn as Gandalf in "Fellowship of the Rings" (2001).

Blanchett became another actor to be directed to an Academy Award by Woody Allen when she won for "Blue Jasmine" (2013). She was also nominated for "Carol" (2015).

And she has the distinction of being nominated twice for playing the same character, playing Queen Elizabeth I in "Elizabeth" (1998) and "Elizabeth: The Golden Age" (2007).

Blanchett has also been nominated for Supporting Actress several times, winning for playing Katharine Hepburn in "The Aviator" (2004). She was also nominated for playing Bob Dylan in "I'm Not There" (2008) and for "Notes on a Scandal" (2006).
10. Kate Winslet is another actress who has gotten frequent Oscar attention. But which role got snubbed by Academy voters?

Answer: April Wheeler, "Revolutionary Road" (2008)

The only member of the cast of "Revolutionary Road" (2008) to get an acting nomination was Michael Shannon. Winslet did win a Golden Globe, and was nominated for a SAG Award for "Revolutionary Road". In the film, Winslet gets back together with her co-star from "Titanic", Leonardo DiCaprio. They play a couple with a dysfunctional marriage trying to pretend it works in 1950s suburban Connecticut.

Winslet won in 2009 for playing Hanna Schmitz, a woman who went to prison for war crimes rather than admit she was illiterate, in "The Reader".

None of the actors in "Titanic" (1997) won an acting award, despite it being the Best Picture and highest grossing film of the 20th century; Winslet and Gloria Stuart (old Rose) were nominated.

She was also nominated for "Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind" (2004), in which she has a complex relationship with Jim Carrey.

Winslet was also nominated for the complex psychological drama "Little Children" (2006). She had several nominations for Best Supporting Actress: Marianne Dashwood in the Jane Austen period drama "Sense and Sensibility" (1995); young Iris Murdoch in "Iris" (2001) and Johanna Hoffman in "Steve Jobs" (2015).
