Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In what city is the film set?

Answer: Chicago

Chicago has a population of about three million people. The city is on the shore of Lake Michigan. The film takes place at night, but viewers can still recognize the busy downtown district.
2. Tony, played by Vincent D'Onofrio, and a friend are walking together when they are surrounded by a group of hooligans. Where does this take place?

Answer: On a public street

Other than the overt violence in the scene, one of the most chilling things about it is that you can see more people in the distance, but no one stops to help. Moments later, that will become unnecessary. However, as the scene opens, the audience doesn't know this.

The cold reaction of passersby is a subtle statement about how people don't seem to care about violence--at least not when it's against certain victims.
3. What does Tony do when the strangers close in on him and his friend?

Answer: Pulls a gun

Tony is armed and ready to fight. This comes as a big surprise to the would-be attackers. The thugs plead for mercy; most manage to back away in time, but one of them is still too close for comfort. Tony screams at him and presses him to the ground. Is it self-defense or abuse? The ethical dividing line is another compelling point of the plot.
4. What is the name of Tony's friend?

Answer: Levon

Levon was played by Harry Waters, Jr. Waters began his acting career with a number of television roles in the 1980s. In the film, Levon has little in the way of lines. During the attack scene, a frightened Levon steps back out of danger. Tony then subdues the crowd. Levon, relieved, flashes a smile at the strangers. Turnabout is fair play.
5. What is Tony's occupation?

Answer: Police officer

He is a sergeant. After the crowd tries to press in on him, Tony pulls his gun. Then he takes out his badge. The thugs find out the hard way, that they picked on the wrong person this time.
6. What actor, who played Dr. Evil's son Scott in "Austin Powers 2", portrayed one of the attackers in the crowd?

Answer: Seth Green

Seth Green is from Overbrook Park in Philadelphia. He was the co-creator, along with Matthew Senreich, of the show "Robot Chicken".
7. Tony warns the criminals they'd better be careful, because sometimes, their intended victims can do something unexpected. What is it?

Answer: "Bash back"

Tony pulls his gun and pins one of the attackers to the street. The lines are directed at the whole group, but Tony is looking at the man on the ground while he speaks. Then he lets everyone go, without firing a shot. This happens about ten minutes into the film.
8. Where does Tony say that Jimmy, one of the hoodlums, should go?

Answer: To see Tony's mother

This is another of many plot twists in the film. Jimmy is frightened, but dare not say no. Tony may have felt justified in continuing the fight. Even though no one came to help him, though, since the street is a public place, there is a chance he'd be found out.

The dinner with Tony's mother is a kind of poetic justice. It puts Jimmy completely at Tony's mercy, forces him to feel just as scared as Tony and Levon did on the street, and it also means there will be no physical evidence back at the scene of the attack.
9. Who directed the film?

Answer: Tom DeCerchio

DeCerchio directed the 1996 comedy, "Celtic Pride". He also directed the Budweiser commercials with the tagline, "Yes, I am."
10. Does Tony tell his mother what really happened at the fight?

Answer: No

When Jimmy shows up for dinner, everything proceeds as normal. Tony's mother, played by Eileen Brennan, is a happy-go-lucky figure who fixes a nice dinner and introduces herself to the guest without ever latching on to the fact that there is more to the story.

It is she, in fact, who mistakes Jimmy for one of their relatives. This gives the film a sense of humor to counteract the bleakness of the fight scene.
