Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. 'A Christmas Story' was based on a book by author Jean Shepherd. What was the full title of the book?

Answer: In God We Trust: All Others Pay Cash

Jean Shepherd, who was born in Chicago, Illinois, started his career in radio in 1948 in Cincinnati, Ohio. He was also an actor, as well as being a writer. His book, 'In God We Trust: All Others Pay Cash', was a collection of short stories from which the movie was taken.

This book was released in 1966. He was also the narrator of 'A Christmas Story', telling the story through the eyes of Ralphie Parker as an adult.
2. What department store window were Ralphie and his friends looking into when he saw the Red Ryder, carbon action, 200-shot, range model, air rifle?

Answer: Higbees

This scene was in the beginning of the film. Ralphie and his friends were looking through the Higbees store window at all the Christmas toys and scenery. That's when, among everything else in that window, Ralphie noticed the Red Ryder BB Gun on display, which had a stand-up cutout picture of Mr. Red Ryder himself, as well as a certificate of authentication. For Ralphie, seeing that BB Gun was definitely love at first sight!
3. Ralphie placed an advertisement about the Red Ryder BB Gun in between the pages of one of his mother's magazines for her to find. What was the name of the magazine?

Answer: Look

As Mrs. Parker was calling Ralphie and his brother Randy to the table, he was up in his parent's bedroom strategically placing the ad for the BB Gun in between the pages of her magazine. After doing so, he carefully placed the magazine against her pillow on her bed for her to find.

This was one of his plans to subliminally let his parent's know what he wanted for Christmas. In Ralphie's mind, this was a genius idea.
4. In a conversation between Ralphie's parents, the old man found out that his wife knew the name of the Lone Ranger's nephew's horse. What was his name?

Answer: Victor

The old man was reading the paper and brought up, in conversation with his wife, about the contests that were listed in the paper everyday that he could enter. One of the questions was 'What is the name of the Lone Ranger's nephew's horse'? When his wife had said the horse's name was Victor, this was a surprise to the old man, who asked her how she knew that.

She just casually replied, 'Everybody knows that.' The old man always entered the contests with the hopes of winning $50,000, or even possibly a bowling alley. All his playing and entering payed off for him.

After all, his prize was the infamous leg lamp.
5. Ralphie's little brother, Randy, was always a problem eater at the dinner table. Which food was it that Randy expressed that he hated?

Answer: Meat Loaf

In one scene, Randy displayed his dislike by sticking his fork into the meat with mashed potatoes piled on top, forming a sculpture while saying , "Meatloaf, double beatloaf, I hate meatloaf!' His mother finally got him to eat by telling him to pretend he was a piggie and that the plate of food was his 'trough'.

She then asked him to show her how the piggies ate, to which Randy stuck his face into the plate of food while oinking, pretending to eat like a pig. The old man looked on with disgust, while his mother giggled and encouraged him, since it seemed to be the only way to get him to eat.
6. What was Ralphie's teacher's name?

Answer: Miss Shields

We first heard her name mentioned in a scene where the children all had fake teeth in their mouths, as a gag, and they said 'Good Morning Miss Shields' in unison. She realized they had the fake teeth and held out her hand and the children all came to the front of the class and placed them in her hand, one by one.

She then put them in her desk drawer along, with many other gag items and toys that were also taken from them. The role of Miss Shields was played by actress Tedde Moore, who had played alot of roles on T.V. including some episodes from the 'RoboCop' series and two episodes from the 'Friday the 13th' series.

She also stepped into the role again as Miss Shields in the 1994 movie, 'It Runs In the Family'. This was the sequel to 'A Christmas Story'.
7. According to Ralphie, his hillbilly neighbors had at least 785 smelly hound dogs. What was the last name of the neighbors?

Answer: Bumpus

For some reason, the dogs loved to bother Ralphie's old man. It was because of these dogs that Ralphie and his family had to eat out for Christmas. Ralphie's mother had left the turkey untended while tending to Ralphie's eye injury. It was then that the dogs were able to get in and fight over the turkey.

They knocked it over and devoured it, leaving Mrs. Parker in tears and forcing the family to go out and eat. The owners of the dogs were never seen or heard from in the movie.
8. Who were the two kids that bullied Ralphie and his friends?

Answer: Scut Farkus and Grover Dill

Scut was the leader, with little Grover as his sidekick. They liked to harass the boys before and after school. In one scene, Scut grabbed Ralphie's friend Flick and held his arm behind his back while forcing him to say, "Uncle" repeatedly, to torment him. According to Ralphie, a major characteristic about Scut Farkus was that he had 'yellow eyes'! Scut's bullying finally came to an end when Ralphie eventually lost his temper and jumped him and beat him up after Scut threw a snowball at Ralphie's face.

The roles of Scut and Grover were played by Zack Ward and Yano Anaya.
9. Which Christmas song were Ralphie, Randy, and his mother singing in the car before they got a flat tire?

Answer: Jingle Bells

In a scene where the whole family was driving home, Mrs. Parker and her sons were in the Christmas spirit. They decided to show it by singing very loudly, while the old man just drove making faces of disgust. They ended the song with a raspberry and giggles, then heard a pop. That's when they realized they had a flat, so the old man raced out to fix the flat tire. Ralphie also went out to help his father.

This was right before the infamous 'Oooooh Fuuuudge' moment!
10. At the end of the movie, Ralphie and Randy were asleep in bed. Ralphie was holding his Red Ryder BB Gun close to him. What toy was Randy sleeping with?

Answer: A Zeppelin

While Ralphie's parents sat together with a glass of wine and watched the snow come down in the peaceful Christmas night, the two boys were snug in their beds and happy that they both got what they wanted for Christmas. That's when you saw Randy was hugging his toy zeppelin close to him, while Ralphie of course, was hugging his BB Gun with a big smile! 'A Christmas Story' was directed by Bob Clark, who was also famous for directing another Christmas themed movie in 1974 titled, 'Black Christmas'.

This movie was the exact opposite of 'A Christmas Story', since it was a horror film.
