Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. A common storyline has valiant cowboys outnumbered by menacing Indians. In "They Died With Their Boots On", the massacre at Little Big Horn is dramatized. Who played the doomed Custer?

Answer: Errol Flynn

It was Flynn (and Olivia DeHavilland) who starred. The same formula is at work in "Sea Hawk" and "Captain Blood", where Flynn is outnumbered by Spanish soldiers and English prison-tenders, respectively. Easy to watch - if you don't take the history angle seriously.
2. Another western example is in the classic story of outnumbered Americans confronting Mexican forces in "The Alamo". John Wayne was the star; what role did he play?

Answer: Davy Crockett

Widmark played Jim Bowie. Harvey played the commander, Travis. Richard Boone played Sam Houston (I believe). Nothing special.
3. In "Spartacus", the outnumbering forces were the great armies of the Roman Empire. Kirk Douglas starred - along with Laurence Olivier, Charles Laughton and Peter Ustinov. Who played the up-and-coming Julius Caesar?

Answer: John Gavin

Strode played a gladiator in a memorable scene. Curtis was a slave who bonded with Spartacus in a father-son way. Stone was one of the gladiator-prisoners. Great movie. Also with Jean Simmons and John Ireland.
4. Switching from early Rome to early Greece, who was the star of "The 300 Spartans"?

Answer: Richard Egan

Egan plays King Leonidas - hold that pass! Quinn and Kirk Douglas star in a western man-against-the town in "Last Train to Gun Hill".
Heflin starred in a similar western with Glenn Ford in "3:10 to Yuma".
5. Sometimes it's just the "good guys" against the "bad guys". In "High Noon", Gary Cooper is all alone against several gunmen who are out to kill him. Grace Kelly played Cooper's wife; who played Cooper's old girl friend?

Answer: Katy Jurado

Good job in the role. Fine movie.
6. Sometimes the bad guys are Nazis. In "The Diary of Anne Frank", Anne (and her family) are surrounded by enemies. Who played Anne?

Answer: Millie Perkins

Sad tale of true horror.
7. Another western example has John Wayne sealed up in his jail while trying to resist the superior number of men who are working for his prisoner's brother. Who was NOT among the men who fought it out with the bad guys to the end in "Rio Bravo"?

Answer: Ward Bond

Bond, a veteran Wayne co-star, plays a friend who is killed early in the movie. The others are around at the end when the shooting stops.
8. In "Bad Day at Black Rock", Spencer Tracy is outnumbered by a bunch of tough guys in an uncaring town. To make matters worse, Tracy has a physical limitation. What is it?

Answer: He's missing one limb

An arm, to be precise. Taut drama, star cast, well done.
9. One may also be outnumbered as a military prisoner. In "The Great Escape", which prisoners are re-captured and returned to the camp alive?

Answer: Steve McQueen and James Garner

McQueen is caught (motorcycle) and Garner is caught (airplane). McCallum is shot while trying to escape at a train station. Attenborough is recaptured and executed. Coburn and Bronson escape (separately). Holden and Graves are in another top prison escape move, "Stalag 17".
10. Sometimes one may be outnumbered by the good guys who are (wrongfully) looking for you. Who starred in "I am a Fugitive From A Chain Gang"?

Answer: Paul Muni

Garfield starred in "They Made Me A Criminal" which also has a good man on the run and hiding out.
