The Army recruiter, Jim Ballard (Harry Dean Stanton), calls in to the radio program that Judy (she gives her name as Jessica) is discussing her problems on. He says that he has the solution to her problems, so she arranges to meet him the next day. After finding out he's talking about the Army, Judy has serious doubts. Jim manages to convince her that it will be like going to a fitness spa, with condos and yachts, and that she can quit any time.

Judy is sent to Fort Biloxi for basic training, and is somewhat confused about what she finds. When Capt. Lewis (Eileen Brennan) comes in for inspection, Judy tells her that she joined a different Army. After Judy comments on how filthy the bathroom is, Capt. Lewis asks to see Judy's toothbrush. Next we see Judy finishing up the bathroom with her toothbrush, moments before she is supposed to wake up.

Judy is exhausted and ready to go to bed one night, but discovers that Gianelli has her blanket. She politely asks for the blanket, but when she attempts to take it, Gianelli jumps Judy. After a scuffle, a dazed Judy starts for the door and says she's going home.

She's later found caught in the barbed wire on top of the fence. As punishment, Capt. Lewis has the whole barracks marching in the rain with full packs on. When they're done, Judy is told she has visitors, who turn out to be her parents. Capt. Lewis comes in with discharge papers, but Judy decides she's going to finish what she started and do it the best she can.

Judy and her group, Pvts. Gianelli, Glass, Moe and Soyer, are assigned to guard the swamp as part of the blue team. They spend the first day being lost, and discuss their sex lives around a fire that night. The next day, they stumble upon the red team's headquarters, and Judy comes up with a plan to disguise themselves as the red team.

In order to do this, she convinces Pvt. Gianelli to sell her red bra and panties to make armbands for the team. They manage to capture the red team and lead them to blue team headquarters.

The girls are in the barracks dancing to celebrate their war game victory, when a drunken and humiliated Capt. Lewis comes in. She announces that she's being transferred to a better assignment. Later, as she's packing her bags, Judy and the girls slip into her bathroom and put blue dye in the shower head.

Judy impressed Col. Thornbush with her ingenuity at the war games, and he has her assigned as the first lady Thornbird. She tries her best, but Judy is just not cut out for jumping from airplanes. The day of the big jump arrives, but Judy tells Col. Thornbush she can't do it.

As he's unstrapping his gear, Col. Thornbush tells Judy she doesn't have to jump, there are other ways she could serve her country. Judy decides she'd rather jump.
