"Purple Rain" Movie Highlights Quiz

The motion picture captured many of the buildings in downtown Minneapolis including the IDS Tower and the First Avenue Night Club. During the film, we see Lake Minnetonka and "The Kid" is seen driving his motorcycle all around the Minneapolis area.

Billy was the name of the club owner. One memorable scene is when Billy and Morris (The Kid's rival) wonder if a girl group might be better for the club than The Kid with all of his drama. Billy Sparks not only played the role in the film, he actually owned the club! Prince and Billy were friends for decades after performing at his club in the 80s until his passing in 2016.

Lisa and Wendy were two members of The Revolution and were working on side music. They wanted The Kid to listen to a song they were proud of creating. In a "don't blink or you'll miss it moment", we see them hand him a cassette with "Slow Groove" written on the sleeve. You can hear the melody to "Purple Rain" in the snippets but hearing the full rendition in the film's finale is a goose-bump moment in movie history. Lisa Coleman and Wendy Melvoin were key members of The Revolution and built a solid solo career after venturing away from Prince's band.

Hop in your car and head about 20 minutes southwest of Minneapolis and you'll find yourself at Lake Minnetonka.The joke in the film was Apollonia was dared to jump into a cold Lake Minnetonka. She undresses and skinny dips into the lake only to hear Prince say, "That ain't Lake Minnetonka".

Answer: Sex

During the film, Apollonia 6 make their debut at First Avenue performing "Sex Shooter" in lacy black lingerie. The provocative song grabbed The Kid's attention. "Sex Shooter" was an original Prince composition. The song was released twice. First on the Apollonia 6 debut album and three decades later we heard Prince's own version on the 2019 posthumous album, "Originials".

Answer: Clarence Williams III

Like Prince's father in real life, both were musicians. In fact, Prince's birth father received songwriting credits for a "Purple Rain" b-side, "God". Clarence Williams has been in numerous films over the years including "Half Baked" and "Sugar Hill".

Answer: Jungle Love

"Jungle Love" is the first song performed by Morris Day in the film. The song's call and response style mesmerized the crowd and got everyone up and dancing. Later in the film, they performed "The Bird" just before the film introduced the epic "Purple Rain" performance. Morris Day and Prince went to high school at the same time and played in local bands prior to Prince getting his record deal.

When The Time debut album was recorded, Prince was heavily involved in the production and wrote most of the songs and music.

Answer: Darling Nikki

"Darling Nikki" opens with the line "I knew a girl named Nikki, I guess you could say she was a sex fiend." The shocked looks on Morris and Apollonia's faces were priceless. The song became a target for the parental advisory groups for mentioning masturbation in the risque lyrics.

In a rage, The Kid starts destroying everything in the basement. With the room in shambles, he discovers a box of his dad's music compositions. As the song goes, "Sometimes I'm just like my father", it's a turning point in his attitude and sets the film up for the grand finale.

Answer: Baby I'm A Star

The movie ends with a crescendo as we hear "Baby I'm A Star" before the credits roll. The song cuts between the live performance and scenes of the band is in sync. The Kid is in love with Apollonia, and The Kid is healing from his dad's tragedy. The soundtrack's single "I Would Die 4 U" was released as an extended cut when it was merged with "Baby I'm A Star". Fittingly the movie "Purple Rain" concludes with those two songs back to back, first "I Would Die 4 U" followed by the finale, "Baby I'm A Star" after the breathtaking "Purple Rain" performance.
