Though her husband put her on the first ship out of port, Cora is a kind hearted loving person who defends the aborigines when they are threatened. She has been given the name Crazy Cora because of her actions and ramblings about Roy, her husband. It becomes fairly plain in the movie her actions have been a defense mechanism to enable her to survive.

When Quigley understands why he has been sent for, to kill aborigines, he puts Marston through his own window. Marston's servant knocks Quigley out. Because Quigley had defended Cora when he first came ashore and asked Marston to keep her safe until they could talk, Marston says to take both of them 'two days ride' into the desert. Marston says "Let Australia kill them", so he won't be held responsible. "No man puts me through my own window."

Cora calls him Roy, her husband's name. Quigley wonders if she knows who he really is and insists she has to use his name, Matthew Quigley.

Pacification by Force was in practice in Australia into the 1880s and thought to bring the native aborigines to a peaceful state by forcing them to obey the laws imposed on them. Marston uses this as a reason to eliminate any he can find, fueled by hate for the aborigines for the massacre of his parents.

When Quigley leaves Cora and Little Bit, the aboriginal baby they saved, behind in the cave, Cora mentions that she could use something else to wear. "If you see any dresses that aren't too costly, red's my favorite color. Red or even pink, but red's favorite."
