Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In what year did the events depicted in the movie take place?

Answer: 1931

For many years it was government policy to remove half-caste children from their families and to raise them to become servants and labourers. This is why the girls were taken from their mothers in 1931. 70 years later, in 2001, Molly had the following to say "Those other kids that were taken, they were much younger. They didn't know mother. But I was older, I knew mother. I wanted to go home to mother".
2. What was the name of Molly and Daisy's mother?

Answer: Maude

Gracie's mother was Lily, and the girls' grandmother was Frinda. The girls' fathers had been white men who had worked on the rabbit-proof fence.
3. Molly, Grace, and Daisy belonged to what 'mob'?

Answer: The Jigalong Mob

Jigalong is a small outpost on the edge of the Gibson Desert in Western Australia.
4. How old were the girls?

Answer: 14 years, 10 years, and 8 years old

Molly was 14, her sister Daisy was 8, and their cousin Gracie was 10.
5. What was the name of the Native Settlement that the girls were taken to?

Answer: Moore River

Moore River was 1200 miles from Jigalong. The girls were taken most of the way by train, locked up in a cage.
6. What was the nickname the Aboriginals gave to Western Australia's Chief Protector of Aborigines, A.O. Neville?

Answer: Mr. Devil

A. O. Neville was Chief Protector of Aboriginals between 1915 and 1940.
7. What was the name of the tracker who was sent to track the girls down?

Answer: Moodoo

Molly was a good enough tracker to know how to cover her tracks, and therefore the girls were able to outwit Moodoo on several occasions.
8. At one point the girls were separated and Gracie was captured. Did Gracie ever make it back to her home?

Answer: No

Gracie had heard that her mother had gone to Wiluna and decided to go there. She left Molly and Daisy but she was recaptured. She was taken back to Moore River and was never to see Jigalong again. She died before the movie was made. Her daughter, Celine, said in an interview on ABC TV 'She was taken from her family, from her country, brought down to Moore River, as you know, never ever returned to Jigalong. And - as a consequence of that - my mother had a very sad life.'
9. Molly was to repeat the walk again later a few years later.

Answer: True

In 1940, when Molly had two children of her own, she and her children were sent to Moore River. Molly was able to escape with her baby, Annabelle, and they made the journey back to Jigalong. A couple of years later, Annabelle was taken from her mother for good. Mother and daughter have never been reunited.
10. Who wrote the book on which the movie was based?

Answer: Molly's daughter

The book was written by Molly's eldest daughter, Doris Pilkington Garimara. Doris had been left behind at Moore River when Molly made her second walk. It was to be 30 years before Doris was reunited with her mother.
