This fifth film in the Rambo series is set several years after the previous one and finds Rambo back in the USA and living in what was his father's ranch in Arizona.

Sylvester Stallone stars as John Rambo in 'Rambo: Last Blood', the role he also played in the previous four films. The character had served in the US army in the war in Vietnam and all the films show how his painful experiences there scarred him for at least several decades afterwards.

Maria is Gabriela's maternal grandmother and both live with Rambo on his ranch, where Maria takes care of the house and the teen-aged Gabriela, who is still studying and helps Rambo with breaking in horses.

Gabriela's father was abusive towards her now deceased mother and then left when she was much younger. A former schoolfriend, Gizelle, who now lives in Mexico, tells Gabriela she knows where he lives. Ignoring Rambo's and Maria's pleas not to go to Mexico until she is older, Gabriela leaves home to go there without their knowledge.

Although the film, 'Rambo: Last Blood', is supposed to be set in Arizona and Mexico, it was filmed mainly in Bulgaria. Each film in the Rambo series had a different director and this one, first released in September 2019, was directed by Adrian Grünberg.

Upset about her father's rejection of her, Gabriela is persuaded by her 'friend', Gizelle, to go to a club. While there her drink is drugged and she is kidnapped and imprisoned by members of a Mexican criminal cartel seemingly with Gizelle's knowledge.

The first film in the series, 'First Blood' (1982), was based on a book by David Morrell but other writers were responsible for the later films. Sylvester Stallone wrote the story for 'Rambo: Last Blood' together with Dan Gordon and wrote the screenplay with Matthew Cirulnick, while the music for the film was composed by Brian Tyler.

Rambo goes to Mexico to find Gabriela and discovers what has happened to her by 'strongly questioning' several people. He approaches one of the cartel's building but is seen and beaten up badly and Gabriela is then ill-treated by the cartel as they discover the two are connected with each other.

When it was released 'Rambo: Last Blood' did not receive a very good critical reception in the USA but it was financially successful by making an overall profit, taking $91.4 million worldwide against a production budget of $50 million and advertising budget of $30 million.

Carmen is an independent journalist observing the cartel's members and activities in order to expose them. She is motivated to do this because they kidnapped, imprisoned and ill-treated her sister, who died through their actions.

The Spanish actress Paz Vega plays the role of Carmen in 'Rambo: Last Blood'. Hugo and Victor Martinez, brothers who run the cartel, are two other important characters and are played by Spanish actors Sergio Peris-Mencheta and Oscar Jaenada respectively.

Carmen takes Rambo into her home to recover from his injuries and later he finds and enters the brothel into which Gabriela was taken. He forcibly takes her away but she dies on the way home to Arizona due to the many injections of drugs she was given.

As other box-office successes had been, the film 'Rambo: Last Blood' and some of its personnel were nominated for several Golden Raspberry Awards in 2020. Only the film won anything though - the two categories of Worst Prequel, Remake, Rip-off or Sequel and Worst Reckless Disregard for Human Life and Public Property. In contrast the film was also nominated for the Best in Entertainment category in the Shorty Awards of 2020.

Rambo goes back to the town in Mexico where the cartel is based to take revenge on the people whose actions killed Gabriela. He asks Carmen for help and after some hesitation she provides this. Rambo is then able to enter the home of one of the cartel leaders, Victor Martinez, and execute him and other cartel members.

'Rambo: Last Blood' and some of the people involved in making it received a number of nominations in the National Film & TV Awards of 2019. They won in two categories with Yvette Monreal being judged Best Supporting Actress and the film itself being accounted Best Action Movie.

Before returning to Mexico Rambo anticipated that his actions against the cartel would result in them coming to attack him in his home. Accordingly he placed a number of booby traps in the tunnels close to his ranch as well as planting some traps in other areas of the property.

In addition to the cinema version of the film making a financial profit, 'Rambo: Last Blood' has sold well as a Blu-ray and as a DVD for home viewing, with an estimated $16.1 million and $9.5 million respectively being earned by sales of these in the USA alone.

When a large number of cartel members attack Rambo's ranch, most are killed by booby traps or by Rambo in the tunnels. He allows only the remaining cartel leader, Hugo Martinez, to escape from the tunnels but then kills him in a barn by removing his heart.

Two versions of 'Rambo: Last Blood' were released with the version released in the USA, UK and Canada lasting for 89 minutes. The 'international' version lasts for 101 minutes and includes an opening sequence of Rambo rescuing a hiker as well as a few extra scenes in the main film.
