"Star Wars: Episode V - The Empire Strikes Back" was the second film to be released in the "Star Wars" space opera. Largely considered the best of the first six episodes, it showcased the heroes in situations of great peril, with the villains coming back stronger from their rampant losses in the previous movie.

"Star Wars: Episode V" also won for Best Actor, Best Director, and Best Special Effects. However, Best Costume went to "Somewhere in Time", a romantic, fantasy drama. "Superman" won the Special Achievement Award in 1979, while on that same year "Invasion of the Body Snatchers" got the Best Director and Best Sound Awards. "The Departed" is a film about a Boston Irish mob boss, an undercover police agent attempting to gain his trust, and the mole he placed in the police force to guarantee the safety of his illegal empire.

"Goodfellas" is based on Nichola Pileggi's non-fiction book "Wise Guy". Quentin Tarantino wrote the script for "Reservoir Dogs" himself, basing it on Stanley Kubrick's "The Killing", which in turn is adapted from "Clean Break", a novel by Lionel White. "Road to Perdition" is based on a graphic novel of the same name by Max Allan Collins. "Infernal Affairs" has two more sequels and they all came out in theatres before "The Departed" was filmed.
