quiz
Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Where does "The Aristocats" take place?

Answer: France

It takes place in a tense time in France: the country, historically, as well as the rest of the world, was experiencing tensions from a fear of war. War would break out (from the movie's perspective), in four years time (WWI, to be exact).
2. Who is the villain/antagonist of the movie?

Answer: Edgar

Edgar's motive for doing what he did? Frustration and impatience, from both not inheriting Madame's fortune first, and with the "time" that he'd have to wait for the cats to die (he had messed up on his math, thinking the cats would've lived up to 432 years ["That's 4 times 12, multiplied by 9 . . . no that's not right."] when he would've had to wait around 12).

The other names are also those of Disney villains. Amos Slade is from "The Fox and the Hound", Percival McLeach is from "The Rescuers Down Under" and Claude Frollo is from "The Hunchback of Notre Dame".
3. Why does O'Malley jump off the bridge after the train passes by?

Answer: To save Marie

Marie was the only one who fell off the bridge during this scene. Once the others see Marie safe, Toulouse asked "Gee, Marie, why'd you have to fall off the bridge?"
4. Who is Adelaide's (Madame's) lawyer/attorney?

Answer: Georges Hautecourt

When we first see Adelaide entering her house with her parcel, she stops and says "Oh, and Edgar, I'm expecting my attorney, Georges Hautecourt. You remember him, of course?" Edgar replies with a gleeful "Of course, Madame . . . how could anyone forget him?" In the opening credits, though, he is merely listed as 'lawyer.'

The other three names are of other Disney characters: Roger Radcliffe is Pongo's owner from "101 Dalmatians", Padraic Ratigan (yes, the books say his first name) is the main villain from "The Great Mouse Detective", and Preston Whitmore is the old flexible man, and friend of Milo Thatch, from "Atlantis, the Lost Empire".
5. We all love hearing Marie sing in "Scales and Arpeggios," right? Well, even if you don't, did any of the other three cats NOT sing in that song?

Answer: No

Berlioz has his own solo in the song, after Marie sings first. Duchess and Marie have a duet, joined by Toulouse, near the end of the song.
6. "Everybody Wants to Be a Cat" shows us the wonders of jazz music. Which of these typically-jazz instruments are NOT seen in the song?

Answer: The Saxophone

The Russian Cat plays the double-bass, while the Chinese Cat plays the piano, and the English Cat plays the guitar. Other jazz instruments seen include the trumpet (Scat Cat) and drums (the Chinese Cat), and two not-normally-jazz instruments incluse the accordion (the Italian Cat) and the harp (Duchess).
7. Which of these is NOT a part of Thomas O'Malley's full name?

Answer: Tracy

We hear his name only three times in the movie, all of them in the song "Thomas O'Malley Cat". His full name is Abraham de Lacy, Giuseppe, Casey, Thomas O'Malley.

His name has 39 letters in it, which, compared to other Disney characters with long names, is less than both Panchito's 53 ("The Three Caballeros") and Sebastian's 45 ("The Little Mermaid"), but more than Lumpy's 33 ("Pooh's Heffalump Movie"), Tito's 32 ("Oliver & Company") and Wendy's 23 ("Peter Pan").
8. What is ironic about the room in which Edgar lives in?

Answer: Even though he lives in a mansion, his room is not richly-decorated.

While Adelaide and Georges Hautecourt are discussing her will, we get a view of Edgar's room as he eavesdrops. The walls are peeling; the ceiling is the wood that shows to be supporting the roof; his bed is simple; and his mirror only offers a head and shoulder view, at most. This may be a small side-reason as to why he wants Adelaide's estate.

The other choices do not exist in his room.
9. What is the main reason that Duchess and O'Malley's relationship is strained throughout the entire movie?

Answer: Their opinions of Madame range from loving to apathetic.

The Casanova/outer beauty was more like an initial reaction, while Duchess' refusal to allow them to go on an adventure was a result of her longing to be with Madame.

When O'Malley offers them to show them all of Paris, Duchess refuses, telling him "My mistress will be so worried about us." O'Malley casually replies with "Well, humans don't really worry too much about their pets," at which Duchess defends Madame. Also, in the romantic chimney scene, after Duchess persists that they must return to Madame, O'Malley says "B-but madam's...she's just another human. You're just her housepet."
10. From two clues in her mansion, we can tell that Madame Adelaide is fond of the musical composer _______. (Hint: one clue is seen in the song "Scales and Arpeggios")

Answer: Bizet

The first clue we can see/hear is when Georges Hautecourt dances with Adelaide; the song playing on the gramaphone is "Habaņera", from the play "Carmen", composed by Georges Bizet. The second clue is in the song "Scales and Arpeggios"; the sheet music cover on the piano has the name Bizet on it.
