One subject in particular displays remarkable progress and adaptability to a certain experimental drug. Initially, the subject is unable to complete the task of solving the Lucas Tower. It is a game also known as the Tower of Hanoi. There are three rods and a number of different size rings.

The object is to move one ring at a time so that all of the rings are positioned on one rod in the correct order. In the film, there are four rings. A perfect solution is fifteen moves. The subject is able to solve the puzzle after receiving the experimental drug in twenty moves.

The CEO, Stephen Jacobs (David Oyelowo) demands that the subjects be destroyed. However, one subject is saved. Will adopts the chimp and Will's father names him, Caesar. Caesar has inherited his remarkable intelligence from his mother and ultimately becomes the leader of the primates.

Charles experiences an almost immediate benefit from the drug and regains his former great talent in music.

Charles, Will's father, sadly gets into a neighbor's car and haphazardly smashes the car into adjacent vehicles. The neighbor is outraged and accosts Charles. Being overly protective, the chimp lashes out after the unruly neighbor, tracks him down and ultimately bites off his finger. This act results in the incarceration of the chimp.

Sequestered in their cages, Will's chimp unexpectedly meets a clever orangutan, named Maurice. Maurice has learned sign language and is able to communicate with the chimp. They form a mutually beneficial relationship.
