Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Once they were on the island, the first place the Russian sailors came across was the beach house where Walt Whittaker and his family were vacationing. What did the Russians ask to borrow from Walt Whittaker?

Answer: Car

The Russians sent a shore party to find a boat in order to pull them free after their submarine accidentally ran aground off of Gloucester Island. The Whittakers were discussing plans for their last day on the island when the Russians knocked on the door, looking for a boat. Since the Whittakers had no boat, the Russians asked to borrow the car so they could get to the harbor, where there were boats.

At first, Kolchin and Rozanov pretended to be Norwegians, but the Whittaker's son, Pete, kept telling his dad to ask if they were Russians. Rozanov finally admitted that they were Russians, and then pulled his gun on them.
2. The sailor who stayed at the Whittaker's house, Kolchin, explained how the Russians came to be on the island. He said that they had brought the sub so close to the island because the Captain wanted to look at America.

Answer: True

In the opening sequence, the Captain was looking through the periscope at the island while ignoring the warnings of his crew about the water depth. Finally, he called for the engines to be stopped, but it was too late, the sub was stuck. Walt and his family thought the island was being invaded by the Russians, but after Kolchin explained that they just wanted to find a boat to get them off of the sandbar, the Whittakers realized the Russians were only there by accident.

When Walt asked Kolchin why the Captain wanted to look at America, Kolchin answered that he'd never seen it.
3. When the Russians got to West Village, they encountered the Postmistress, Muriel Everett. What did they do with her?

Answer: Tied her to a chair and hung it on the wall.

Muriel was fixing breakfast when she heard a commotion outside. Thinking high school kids were messing with her car, she got her glasses and went outside to take a closer look. After getting a good look at the men in dark clothing holding guns, Muriel said, "Russians!, Russians!", and ran back in the house.

She got on the phone and told Alice to call Chief Mattocks because "the Russians have landed". The last thing she was able to say before the Russians pulled out the phone cord was that the Russians were attacking her. Muriel was gagged and tied to a chair which the Russians hung from hooks on the wall.

As a large Russian (the one who looked like Uncle Harry) was standing in front of her apologizing, Muriel gave him a kick to the stomach.
4. After Walt and his family managed to wrestle the gun away from Kolchin, Walt left to go to Gloucester Haven. What mode of transportation did he use?

Answer: Bicycle

When the babysitter, Alison, arrived at the Whittaker's house, Walt distracted Kolchin and jumped on his back. After wrestling around, Walt managed to take the gun from Kolchin, who then ran off to the dunes. Despite his son telling him he looked silly riding a girl's bike, Walt left for the village on Alison's bike to call the police. On the way, he passed the car which had been abandoned by the Russians after it ran out of gas. Walt found a few people in West Village, but the rest had already left after word got out that the Russians were attacking.
5. As soon as Chief Mattocks asked Alice Foss to muster his deputies, word spread quickly that Russians were attacking the island. Before long, many of the island's citizens were in the streets with their weapons, led by gung-ho Fendall Hawkins. After the Chief talked to everyone, he agreed that they could come with him to see whether it was true that the Russians had captured a particular place. What place was their destination?

Answer: Airport

Chief Mattocks left Norman in charge of the town defenses and said all the unarmed men should stay there. Norman tried to organize the men and round up some weapons, but once Marvin opened the bar, all of the men went in there and started drinking. Chief Mattocks and all of the other men converged on the airport, but there was nothing going on there other than the phone lines being out of order, as they were on the whole west side of the island.
6. Walt Whittaker, or Whittaker Walt as Rozanov called him, finally made it to Gloucester Haven. After he was grabbed by Rozanov, who did the Russians eventually tie Walt up with?

Answer: Alice Foss

Walt went to the bar and told Norman that the Russians were looking for a boat, prompting Norman to put a guard on the harbor. This prevented the Russians, who were hiding out in the nearby cleaners, from getting to the motor boat. Rozanov and his men grabbed Walt and took him to the telephone office. Walt and Alice (the telephone operator) were tied up together, resulting in several hilarious scenes involving their attempts to get on their feet, and then downstairs.
7. What phrase did Rozanov teach the Russian sailors to say in case they encountered someone on their way through town?

Answer: "Emergency, everybody to get from street."

Rozanov asked Whittaker Walt if he had any ideas for how to get the men from "boat place". Walt suggested that some of the Russians go outside of town and fire their weapons to create a diversion. He also suggested they disguise themselves with clothing from the cleaners. Later, walking purposely through town, the group of five Russian sailors came across a boy standing on a porch. Looking startled, the men looked at each other and then recited their sentence, mostly in unison.

The boy, looking as startled as the Russians, hollered for his mom and ran into the house.

The sailors looked at each other, satisfied with their work, and went on.
8. Kolchin began walking to the village after he lost his weapon to Walt.

Answer: False

Kolchin stayed hidden in the dunes, watching as Walt left. After a neighbor came by to ask if their phones were out, Elspeth and Pete got a ride with him into town, leaving only Alison and Annie at the house. Kolchin went into the house and found his gun, but offered to give it to Alison so she wouldn't be afraid.

She said she wasn't afraid and let him keep it, then noticed that his forehead was bleeding. Attracted to each other, Alison and Kolchin exchanged names and began talking while Alison encouraged him to have some milk and chocolate cake.

They later went out on the beach with Annie. After Kolchin expressed his hope that Alison would come and see him when he ended up in an American jail, Alison gave him a kiss, prompting his cute remark, "You kiss at me".
9. Having managed to free the sub from the sandbar, the Captain arrived in the harbor to pick up his men. When he found out they weren't all there, the Captain threatened to fire on the island, with the Chief threatening to fire on the Russians. What ended the standoff and caused the Russians and the Americans to work together?

Answer: Jerry fell from the church steeple.

Shortly after Rozanov headed to the Whittaker house to pick up Kolchin, Walt and his family headed there when they realized that Alison and Annie were alone. After nearly shooting Rozanov, Walt said it wasn't personal, he was just worried about his daughter. Rozanov lamented the fact that he kept saying goodbye to Whittaker Walt but they were always meeting again.

They all went to the harbor together, but were dismayed to find the submarine there. Thinking the seven men from the motor boat had been arrested, the Russian Captain demanded their release or he would start firing on the island. Chief Mattocks asked for the Captain's name and address to write him a ticket, but stopped when he saw the deck guns leveled at them.

This tense moment was interrupted by Jerry Maxwell (Deputy Oscar Maxwell's son) screaming as he fell from the steeple where he and his little friend had gone to get a better look at things. Russians and Americans alike all ran to the church and worked together to build a pyramid up to where the boy was dangling from a hook.

After the boy was rescued, the Russians and Americans congratulated and thanked each other.
10. What happened to the Russians?

Answer: They left with the help of the islanders.

During the standoff, Fendall left to go use Ed Spooner's radio to call somebody for help. After Jerry Maxwell was rescued, Fendall, who had missed all the cooperation and good feelings, came running up to say that he had gotten in touch with the Air Force, and they were sending help. Realizing the Russian submarine didn't have enough time to get away, Elspeth Whittaker suggested that the islanders could use the boats in the harbor to give the submarine an escort so it wouldn't be bombed by the Air Force. Everyone watched as the jets flew over twice, and then left.

The motor boat with the seven missing sailors showed up, and everyone said their goodbyes before the submarine submerged and went on its way.
