Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Who co-wrote the film with Wes Anderson?

Answer: Owen Wilson

Anderson also wrote "Bottle Rocket" and "The Royal Tenenbaums" with Owen Wilson. Anderson met Wilson while he was studying at the University of Texas. "Rushmore" had a lot of events inspired by their own lives. For example, the Geometry classroom at the beginning of the film was actually Anderson's Math classroom.
2. Magnus, the guy who constantly bullied little kids in school, was from which country?

Answer: Scotland

Magnus was Scottish and had a very strong Scottish brogue. He addressed Max and Dirk as "sonny", "brotha" and "mate" throughout the film. He was rather well-built and enjoyed bullying all the weak kids at school, including Max, until one day Max offered him a part in one of his plays. Magnus really appreciated this and told Max that he had always wanted to be in a play.
3. Who did not star in "Rushmore"?

Answer: Alec Baldwin

Alec Baldwin gave his voice to the narrator in "The Royal Tenenbaums", which was also directed by Wes Anderson. Olivia Williams played the part of Miss Cross, Brian Cox played the part of Dr. Nelson Guggenheim and Luke Wilson played the part of Dr. Peter Flynn.
4. What did Max tell Miss Cross he wanted to study in college?

Answer: Math and premed

When Max and Miss Cross were talking in the school yard, Miss Cross asked him what he wanted to study and Max told her he wanted to double major in math and premed, which was rather impossible since he was one of the worst students in Rushmore.
5. Complete the quote: "You guys have it real easy. I never had it like this where I grew up. But I send my kids here because the fact is you go to one of the best schools in the country: Rushmore. Now, for some of you it doesn't matter. You were born ______ and you're going to stay _____."

Answer: rich

Mr. Blume, played by Bill Murray, said this during the speech he made at the beginning of the school year. Max woke up from the dream he had about the Geography class, just two minutes into the movie, and Mr. Blume started his speech with the quote mentioned in the question. While he was talking Max took notes and wrote: "Rich kids - Bad?" and "This guy - Best chapel speaker I have ever seen". When the speech was over it was only Max who applauded fervently.
6. Which was NOT one of Max Fischer's extra-curricular activities?

Answer: Dodgeball Team Captain

The whole list of his activities was as follows: Yankee Review Publisher, French Club President, Model United Nations Russia, Stamp and Coin Club Vice-President, Debate Team Captain, Lacrosse Team Manager, Calligraphy Club President, Astronomy Society Founder, Fencing Team Captain, Track and Field J.V. Decathlon, 2nd Chorale Choirmaster, Bombardment Society Founder, Kung Fu Club Yellow Belt, Trap and Skeet Club Founder, Rushmore Beekeepers President, Yankee Racers Founder, Max Fischer Players Director, Piper Cub Club (4.5 Hours Logged).
7. Which of these movies was NOT referenced in "Rushmore"?

Answer: 2001: A Space Odyssey

"Good Will Hunting" was spoofed at the beginning of the film, when Max dreamt of solving a geometry problem and never having to open another math book again for the rest of his life. The reference to "The Graduate" was in Max's and his teacher's flirtation, as well as the scene where Mr. Blume tries to find peace at a party at his house by floating underwater in the swimming pool and a boy stares at him.

When Max bought dynamite, he said "Could you make the order out to Ready Demolition, Tucson, Arizona?" This was what Val Kilmer said when he was buying explosives in "Heat".
8. What did Max's father do for a living and what did Max tell everyone he did?

Answer: barber/neurosurgeon

Max actually told Mr. Blume that his father was a neurosurgeon and he enjoyed cutting open brains. Everyone in school thought Mr. Fischer was a neurosurgeon. When Dr. Flynn said "I understand you're a neurosurgeon." Max's father's response was really great: "No, I'm a barber, but a lot of people make that mistake."
9. How did Edward Applebee, Miss Cross's husband, die?

Answer: He drowned.

When Max came to see Miss Cross and talked about her relationship with Mr. Blume, he asked her how her husband died and she told him he drowned. Although there was no flashback scene in the film, allowing us to see Mr. Applebee, his photos were in Miss Cross's bedroom and the actor in those photos was Owen Wilson. That's why his name appeared on the cast list, though uncredited.
10. Who were Ronny and Donny?

Answer: Mr. Blume's rather stupid sons

Ronny and Donny were rather dumb athletes who showed no sign of intelligence whatsoever but excelled in wrestling. Their father, Mr. Blume, was really annoyed by their attitude and said he had never ever imagined he'd have sons like these.
