Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Who starred as Dr. Moreau in the 1932 film of 'The Island of Lost Souls'?

Answer: Charles Laughton

Unlike later versions of the Dr. Moreau story, which use genetic modification, in this one the monsters are created by surgery alone. Randolph Scott played a most convincing monster.
2. For which 1936 film did Lionel Barrymore dress as a woman?

Answer: The Devil-Doll

Lionel Barrymore's character learns how to shrink people from an ex-convict scientist friend and does so to use them to commit crimes. This film was heavily censored but is still a classic.
3. The 1949 film 'Mighty Joe Young' had the same producer and director as 1933's 'King Kong'.

Answer: True

The Director, Ernest B. Schoedsack, was actually the co-director of 'King Kong' along with Merian C. Cooper.
4. What city does the flying saucer land in, in 'The Day the Earth Stood Still' (1951)?

Answer: Washington, DC

This is possibly the best known Sci-fi film of the early '50s, in which a visitor from outer space tries to show us our faults and gets shot for his trouble. A fairly typical human response.
5. Which 1950s film had a storyline about a black man, a white man and a white woman who are the only survivors of the holocaust?

Answer: The World, the Flesh, and the Devil

Many people found this film shocking when it first came out as it dealt with mixed-race relationships and racism.
6. What is the name of the village in 1960's 'Village of the Damned'?

Answer: Midwich

Based on a book by the great John Wyndham, who also wrote 'The Day of the Triffids'.
7. In 1961 a film was released that spawned a hit TV series of the same name. What was it?

Answer: Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea

In the film the new high-tech submarine, the 'Seaview', is dispatched to put out a fire in the Van Allen belts.
8. The screenplay for the 1964 John Frankenheimer film 'Seven Days in May' was written by Rod Serling of TV's 'Twilight Zone' fame.

Answer: True

In this film an unpopular American President is plotted against by his own military leaders because he supports a nuclear disarmament treaty and they fear a Soviet sneak attack. A star-studded cast including Burt Lancaster, Kirk Douglas, Frederick March, and Ava Gardner.
9. In a 1966 film a cyborg returns from the future to warn a professor about the dangers of his work, but what year does the cyborg come from?

Answer: 2087

The film was called 'Cyborg 2087'. In this film the cyborg is actually a man controlled by an implanted chip. He succeeds in his mission and both he and his pursuers cease to exist, as do everybody's memories of them ever being there.
10. Who wrote the book 'Fahrenheit 451' which was made into a film in 1966?

Answer: Ray Bradbury

Not a great treatment of a good book, made by Francois Truffaut it lacked Bradbury's sharpness and belief in the subject, although it is very well made. The story itself loses a lot and I would recommend reading the book instead.
