Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Your job is to infiltrate Pandora's indigenous species, gaining their trust and seeking a way to convince them to leave their home, or else destroy it. However, immersing yourself in native life has led to joining a clan, even falling in love with and marrying a native. The movie is "Avatar" (2009). What do you do?

Answer: Rally the clans and fight back alongside them

Jake Sully (Sam Worthington) inhabits a Na'vi body, cloned to match his deceased twin brother's DNA, during his assignment. Represented by military and business factions, the humans are on Pandora seeking unobtanium, a priceless mineral found beneath clan Omaticaya's Hometree. Having come to respect the Na'vi and no longer seeing them as a lower life form, however, Jake Sully unites clans across the moon to repel the human invaders. He is successful with the help of his wife, Neytiri, and the living world itself. Rejecting his disabled human body, he makes permanent his transformation into a Na'vi.

With its pioneering use of computer graphics and motion-capture technology, James Cameron's "Avatar" and its beautiful cinematography earned three Academy Awards. The film stars Sam Worthington, Zoe Saldana, and Sigourney Weaver.
2. After a cure for cancer turns humanity into a race of vampire-like mutants, an inexplicable immunity has left you, a scientist, among the planet's only survivors - possibly the last one. This scenario is reality in "I Am Legend" (2007). With only your dog for companionship, how do you fill your days?

Answer: Search for a cure

Robert Neville (Will Smith) has, for three years, sought an antidote for the scourge brought upon mankind by a cure for cancer; most of the few with a natural immunity to the virus fell prey to bloodthirsty creatures that are now virtually all that remain of humanity. Robert and his dog, Sam, make a living scavenging the ruins of New York City by day, and staying inside after dark. Losing the will to continue when Sam contracts the virus, Robert is saved from himself by another survivor, Anna. In the end, Robert finds a cure, but makes the ultimate sacrifice to save Anna and her brother. They go to Vermont, where they find a survivor colony to whom Robert Neville's life work truly is a legend.

Director Francis Lawrence's "I Am Legend" is adapted from Robert Matheson's 1954 novel, an early literary example of the zombie genre. Actor Will Smith's daughter, Willow, makes an appearance in the film as Robert Neville's daughter, Marley.
3. When you were eight years old, you saw your parents murdered as they were leaving a theater early, because you were frightened by the play. You've lived with the guilt and anger for many years now. This story is told in "Batman Begins" (2005). Where does your path begin?

Answer: Train with Ducard and the League of Shadows

Bruce Wayne (Christian Bale) experiences a traumatic incident as a child that gives him a paralyzing fear of bats. This is what frightened him about the play, and why he asks his parents, Dr. and Mrs. Thomas Wayne, to leave; just outside the exit, the couple is robbed and killed by Joe Chill, one of Gotham's poverty-stricken citizens. Years later, Bruce intends to find justice, but Chill is assassinated before he has a chance. The young man disappears from Gotham City and returns eight years later, trained in the martial arts by the League of Shadows and Henri Ducard, but having refused to be their executioner. Hoping to redeem his corrupt city instead of destroying it, he turns his fear into a symbol of justice: Batman.

Under Christopher Nolan's direction, "Batman Begins" serves to reboot the "DC Comics"-inspired film series. Christian Bale's supporting cast includes Michael Caine, Morgan Freeman, Gary Oldman, Katie Holmes, and Liam Neeson.
4. Your homeworld, Romulus, has just been destroyed and your family along with it. Sucked into the resulting black hole, your ship emerges some 150 years in the past and you are ready to exact justice on those you deem responsible. The film is "Star Trek" (2009). What's your plan?

Answer: Wait 25 years and avenge your loss on Spock

Nero (Eric Bana) is aboard his ship, the Narada, when Romulus's sun goes supernova and destroys the planet, a disaster Spock is unable to prevent as planned. The Narada is pulled into the black hole Spock creates to counteract the supernova, and the elderly Vulcan's ship follows. Emerging in the year 2233, the Narada forms an alternate timeline, causing the death of George Kirk just as his son, James, is born. Twenty-five years later, Spock arrives and Nero, driven by his quest for revenge on the man he blames for his pregnant wife's death, strikes. His act of vengeance devastates both younger and elder Spock, but the USS Enterprise and its crew succeed in stopping Nero before he continues his attack.

A fresh take on the classic, 1960s television series, J.J. Abrams' "Star Trek" is the eleventh film to bear that name. Its familiar characters are played by Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto, Zoe Saldana, Karl Urban, John Cho, Simon Pegg, and Anton Yelchin; Leonard Nimoy also appears.
5. Your ride in the "Fun-Vee" is cut short when your convoy, visiting Afghanistan, is attacked - and by your own company's weapons. The Ten Rings Gang who holds you captive insists that you build your latest weapon of terror, the Jericho Missile, for them. This is "Iron Man" (2008). How do you escape?

Answer: Construct a metal power suit

Tony Stark (Robert Downey, Jr.) is a wealthy, egocentric genius whose company provides weapons for the American military. What he sees in Afghanistan shocks him, however: his own weapons are being used by terrorists. Injured in the attack and saved by a fellow captive, Tony rigs a miniature arc reactor to power his heart. Tricking his captives into believing he is complying with their demands and building the Jericho Missile, Tony actually creates a suit that is powered by the arc reactor, with which he successfully escapes. The experience leads him to change his profession and, with an enhanced suit, become a force for good. The public names their new hero, Iron Man.

Director Jon Favreau brings the origin story of "Iron Man" (a "Marvel Comics" hero) to film with the acting talents of Robert Downey, Jr., and co-stars Gwyneth Paltrow, Terrence Howard, and Jeff Bridges.
6. You, only a teenager, and a little girl named Star have survived alone in Los Angeles, California, in a post-apocalyptic world dominated by Terminators. You rescue a man named Marcus, who fixes your radio. The film is "Terminator Salvation" (2009). What news do you hear over the radio and immediately act upon?

Answer: John Connor is contacting all resistance cells and survivors

Kyle Reese (Anton Yelchin) and Star are the only human survivors in Los Angeles, California, unofficially considering themselves the "L.A. Branch" of the resistance against Skynet. They rescue Marcus, a newly created Terminator who believes he is human, and fill him in on what has happened to the planet: Judgment Day. They hear John Connor's message of hope sent by radio to survivors and resistance members, and set out to find him; however, Skynet captures Kyle. After learning the truth of his existence, Marcus defies his programming and helps to rescue both John Connor, mankind's future savior, and the boy who, owing to a twist in the timeline, would become John's father, Kyle.

The grim, gray look of McG's post-apocalypse "Terminator Salvation" was modeled after Technicolor's Oz process, in which the film negative is imbued with extra silver. The movie stars Christian Bale, Sam Worthington, Anton Yelchin, and Bryce Dallas Howard.
7. You're a college student with a head for science, and ever since that incident with the spider on a high school field trip, you've been the hero of New York City. However, being a hero doesn't put money in the bank. This is "Spider-Man 2" (2004). How do you make a living?

Answer: Sell photographs of yourself in action

Peter Parker (Tobey Maguire) comes from a family of humble means, raised by his Aunt May and Uncle Ben. Life gets increasingly difficult for Peter, who, residing in a shabby apartment while attending college and keeping New York safe, ekes out a living selling photos of himself as Spider-Man to the Daily Bugle newspaper. Meanwhile, his widowed aunt faces foreclosure on her home, and the object of Peter's affections, Mary Jane, is engaged to another man. J. Jonah Jameson of the Daily Bugle tries to paint Spider-Man as the bad guy, but eight-limbed super-villain, Otto Octavius ("Doc Ock"), gives him another story to print, and Spider-Man, another foe to battle.

Generally cited as the trilogy's best installment, "Spider-Man 2" (based on the "Marvel Comics" character) was directed by Sam Raimi. Tobey Maguire stars with Kirsten Dunst, James Franco, and Alfred Molina.
8. Plagued with visions of your wife dying in childbirth, your best friend at her side, you are determined to do whatever it takes to save her from this fate. You cannot live without her! The movie is "Star Wars III: Revenge of the Sith" (2005). What ultimately paradoxical decision do you make?

Answer: Go to the Dark Side for more power

Anakin Skywalker (Hayden Christensen) is secretly wed to Padme, in violation of the Jedi Code forbidding attachment. When troubling dreams predict her death, mentor Palpatine offers a solution: learn about the Dark Side, and gain power over death. Desperate, Anakin agrees and seals his fate by becoming the Sith Lord's executioner. But when Anakin's beloved learns of the unspeakable things he has done, she succumbs to a broken heart. Palpatine's promise was a lie, actually causing the very fate Anakin tried to avoid. With her dying breath, Padme, having given birth to twins, holds onto the belief that some good still resides in her husband, now Darth Vader.

The final installment of George Lucas's saga, "Star Wars III: Revenge of the Sith" brings the story back to the 1977 film that started it all, completing the circle. Reprising their roles from the preceding film are Hayden Christensen, Natalie Portman, Ewan McGregor, Ian McDiarmid, and Samuel L. Jackson.
9. You've been told you are among the few survivors of a deadly pandemic, and you live for the day you'll win the Lottery and join the other winners on Earth's last safe haven. But the horrible truth of your existence has just come out. The film is "The Island" (2005). What course of action do you choose?

Answer: Find the person to whom you are an insurance policy

Lincoln Six Echo (Ewan McGregor) lives in a facility where his every need is catered to, but individuality is kept to a minimum and everyone is childlike. Told that the Island is the only place on Earth able to support life, Lincoln grows curious when he finds a bug. Exploring the facility, he learns the fate that awaits everyone there: they are an insurance policy for their wealthy owners, clones ready to be dissected for replacement parts. Lincoln escapes with his friend, Jordan Two Delta, and locates his owner, Tom Lincoln; Tom is surprised to learn that his clone is not in a vegetative state, as he was told, but does not care to help. Lincoln, assuming Tom's identity, and Jordan, ultimately succeed in ending the atrocity.

If the intense, heavily destructive action sequences didn't give it away, "The Island" was directed by Michael Bay. It stars Ewan McGregor, Scarlett Johansson, and Sean Bean.
10. You're visiting New York City with two of your friends to participate in an academic decathlon, just when Earth's new ice age decides to form. Thankfully, since your father is a climatologist, you have some idea of what to do. It's "The Day After Tomorrow" (2004). How do you survive the storm?

Answer: Stay in the library with a fire

Sam Hall (Jake Gyllenhaal) finds himself in the middle of the devastating storm that Jack, Sam's father and a paleoclimatologist, predicted would occur due to global warming. However, it's a few thousand years early. Weather patterns across the Northern Hemisphere become increasingly deadly, and Sam is unable to leave New York City. Failing to heed to the instructions Sam relays from his father, most of those trapped in New York's public library set out on foot, with fatal results. Using books to keep their fire going, Sam and those who remain at the library are among the few to survive. With so much of the Earth now turned to ice, survivors from the Northern continents have to look south for a new home.

Critiqued for its abundance of scientific inaccuracies, "The Day After Tomorrow" was directed by disaster-film specialist Roland Emmerich. It features Jake Gyllenhaal, Dennis Quaid, Sela Ward, and Emmy Rossum.
