Answer: Jayne

Jayne is the muscle of the crew. He is usually only concerned with what will profit him and is no stranger to doing whatever it takes to get it. He says this to Mal right before they are about to rob the Alliance payroll. He says it so nonchalantly that you know he has no mixed emotions about "being a bad guy."

Answer: River

River says this during the opening sequence. Teacher is doing a narration about how the universe came to be, and about the war between the Alliance and the Independents. The Alliance represents the government and the Independents represent the people's revolt.

The Alliance is said to offer civilization to all the people of the universe. During her narration, a student asks if the Alliance is so good then why did the people resist them. A young River then replies, "we meddle".

Answer: Simon

Simon's sister, River, has been involuntarily submitted to experimental research. So Simon impersonates a government official sent to check on the research progress, in order to rescue her. While speaking to the doctor in charge of the research, the doctor asks why the government was sending someone to check in on him. To which Simon replies, "Am I making you nervous?"

Answer: Mr. Universe

Mr. Universe is the media man of the universe. He boasts that, "you can't stop the signal", referring to the fact that if it is transmitted then it is out there in space somewhere, just waiting to be found. Referring to this he tells Mal he can find any signal because, "everything goes somewhere..."

Answer: misbehave

At the culmination of the movie Mal gives an inspirational speech to his crew about the seemingly impossible task they face. He tells them that he can't ask them to join him in the fight against the Alliance but he lets them know what his intentions are. With the Alliance acting as the authority figure, he tells them he "aims to misbehave."

Answer: Zoe

During the heist one of the men gets the notion that he can stop Mal and the crew. River senses he is going to try something and tells Zoe. Zoe then goes to him, points her gun at his head, and asks, "do you know what the definition of a hero is? Someone who gets other people killed."

This may be my favorite line in the movie. Mal is getting whooped in a fight with the Operative. After the Operative tosses him across the room, Mal asks, "What, no backup?" The Operative replies, "They'll come when needed." Then Mal quickly replies, "I'd start whistling."

Answer: Kaylee

On Beaumonde, when Simon and River are leaving Serenity, Kaylee is giving Simon advice on how to survive on his own. She tells him to: not pay anybody in advance, talk straight to the captain, don't fly in anything with a capison 38 engine, and don't always be so tidy.

Answer: The Operative

Directly before the first fight between Mal and the Operative, Mal tries to provoke the Operative with insults. The Operative, who seems emotionless throughout the movie, assures Mal that he can't make him angry.

When we first meet the crew of Serenity they are entering the atmosphere of Lilac. An essential part of the ship's landing gear falls off as they enter the atmosphere. Mal and Wash are going over strategies to land the ship safely when Mal finally says, "just get us on the ground." Wash replies, "That part will ..."

Answer: Fanty and Mingo

We first meet Fanty and Mingo in a bar on Lilac. Kaylee is giving Mal an earfull because she is upset about Simon and River leaving Serenity, when Fanty and Mingo walk up and ask Mal if he is having "domestic troubles?"

Answer: Shepherd Book

In Shepherd Book's very sad death scene, Mal is telling the Shepherd to hang on. Book tells Mal that he can't order him around because he is not one of his crew. Mal then insist that he is, referring to the fact that even though the Shepherd doesn't fly with him, Mal still considers him part of the crew.

This is from another scene between Shepherd and Mal. The crew has just escaped the Operative and are hiding on a planet called Haven, where Shepherd Book now resides. Shepherd is trying to advise Mal on what to do and tells Mal that he needs to come up with a plan to deal with the trouble they are in. Mal jokingly asks Shepherd, "Hiding ain't a plan?"

Mutiny has almost set in as Jayne is upset about how the Captain is handling their current situation. He is expressing his discontent when Mal starts to walk away. Jayne yells, "Hey I'm talking at you!" Dead silence follows and high tension is in the air as everyone wonders how the captain will respond. But Zoe steps in and tells Jayne that he had better leave.

This is said during the first meeting between Mal and the Operative. Mal is trying to rescue Inara from some sort of danger and has to sneak past the Operative in a disguise. The Operative is surprised that Mal was able to sneak past them in such a disguise. Mal tells him he can be very graceful and the Operative assures him that he has no doubts.
