Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Early on in the movie, we are watching a scene in which Simon Tam is breaking his sister River out of the facility in which she is being held and experimented on. We come to realize that this is not a current event, but rather a scan of the event, which is being watched by both the doctor who was performing the experiments, and a man known only as "The Operative". The Operative and the doctor are discussing how Simon has given up both his fortune and a career in medicine in order to rescue his sister. The doctor states that it is an act of madness. The Operative asks him "Have you looked at the scan carefully doctor, at his face"? What does The Operative say is the look on Simon's face?
2. Back on board Serenity, Captain Malcolm Reynolds (Mal) and the crew are preparing for a "job". Unfortunately, due to circumstances in the universe, they need to commit the occasional robbery in order to survive. In the middle of the robbery, River senses that the Reavers are upon them. Mal warns the people they are robbing to hide and he and his crew make a mad dash back to their hovercraft. Sure enough, the Reavers are attacking, and one young man chases after Mal and the crew begging for them to take him with them. The Reavers grab the man and begin to attack him. What does Mal do in order to help him?
3. After having a major disagreement with Mal, Simon decides to take his sister River and leave the ship. They land on the planet Beaumonde, where Mal has some business to attend to, and River and Simon will be getting off. Mal is sitting in a bar conducting his business while River is watching the television in the bar. River is drawn to a commercial that is playing a subliminal message which "triggers" her, causing her to attack everyone in the bar. Mal runs to retrieve his gun from storage in an attempt to stop River, but just as he draws his weapon on her, she does the same to him. How does this stand-off come to an end?
4. With the new knowledge that River can be "triggered" at any time to transform into a human weapon, Mal and the crew need to have a better understanding of who and what they are dealing with. Wash suggests to Mal that they go to see a friend who may be able to provide them with some information. What is the name of this friend?
5. The Operative decides to set a trap for Mal, in order to get to River. The Operative forces Inara to contact Mal in the hopes of luring him to the Companion Training House, where she is now living. Mal recognizes that it's a trap but opts to go anyway to draw out the man who is trying to get to River. Mal and The Operative meet face to face for the first time, and after having some words, begin to physically fight. The Operative overpowers both Mal and Inara, and goes for a sword with which to kill Mal. How do Mal and Inara escape The Operative?
6. Ever since the incident in the bar, River is being kept isolated from the others on the ship until they can decide what to do with her. River escapes and makes her way to the bridge, where Mal catches up with her. Mal decides to question River, explaining to her that the "government man" has told him that she is dangerous and Mal would like to know if she is anything more than just a weapon. During this time, River, while holding Mal at gunpoint, brings up a picture on the computer monitor. She points to the picture and utters the word "Miranda". What is she pointing out on the screen, that she calls Miranda?
7. Mal's next move is for them to seek refuge with their friend, Shepherd Book, on the planet Haven, where they can think about what to do next. As the ship approaches the planet, they begin to see that the planet has been attacked, not by Reavers, but by The Alliance. Jayne asks why, if The Alliance knew they were coming, they didn't wait for them to show up. It is Zoe who realizes that The Alliance didn't know that they were coming; she realizes that they are killing everyone who has ever given them shelter. She tells Wash to get on the Cortex (communication device) and warn them all. Are they able to warn their friends in time to save them?
8. While they are still on the planet Haven, and after his discussion with The Operative, Mal has reached his breaking point. He realizes he needs to resort to drastic measures in order to get to the truth about what The Alliance is hiding. He goes back outside and begins ordering the crew to string up the bodies of the dead onto the outside of their ship, and to find some red paint, and to "muck" up the outside of the ship a bit. The crew becomes horrified at what Mal plans to do. What is Mal's plan?
9. Mal's plan is successful and they soon land on the planet that they feel holds the answers they are searching for. As they begin to explore, they realize everyone is dead, but for no obvious reasons. It's as if the people just lay down and died. They come upon the Research Facility, where River finds a hologram scan and plays it. It is a hologram of a doctor recording a message, in which she explains what happened on the planet. She speaks of a drug called Pax that they added into their air processors which was supposed to make people calm and peaceful, but it had an adverse effect on a percentage of the people, which led to them becoming extremely aggressive to the point of madness. What, in fact, had they inadvertently created?
10. Mal contacts a friend, whom he feels could help him broadcast a message to the other worlds. Unfortunately, it's a trap and The Operative is already there and has killed his friend. The Operative then orders his men to destroy all the communication devices, but there is a backup system that he is unaware of. Mal shows up and finds the backup system, but once again is faced with The Operative. After a bloody battle with The Operative, is Mal able to broadcast the message?
