Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Colin Firth appeared in a movie called 'And When Did You Last See Your Father'. Who played his mother?

Answer: Juliet Stevenson

Juliet Stevenson played the long suffering wife, opposite Jim Broadbent as the father. Juliet is probably best known for her role in the movie 'Truly Madly Deeply', for which she was nominated for a Bafta for best actress in a leading role. Other movies she has appeared in include 'Emma', 'Bend it like Beckham' and 'Mona Lisa Smile'.

She has also been very active and successful in the theatre, playing many roles for both The Royal Shakespeare Theatre and the British National Theatre. In 1992 she won the Olivier award for best actress for her performance as Paulina in 'Death and the Maiden'.
2. In 'Bridget Jones's Diary' Colin has the same surname as a character he played before on television. What is that name?

Answer: Mr. Darcy

Colin Firth played Mr. Darcy in a BBC television serialisation of 'Pride and Prejudice', by Jane Austen. This series made him a household name, and especially popular was his emergence from a swim in a lake with a wet shirt on. 'Bridget Jones's Diary' is an adaption of the work of Helen Fielding portraying a woman in her thirties, who loves chardonnay, is slightly overweight and more than a little accident prone. Colin plays a man of similar temperament, reserved and honourable, as the more famous Mr. Darcy of Jane Austen, he is an apt contrast with Daniel Cleaver, played by Hugh Grant, who is a charming rascal.
3. Which king's problems with speech are the subject of the movie 'The King's Speech'?

Answer: George VI

George VI was a shy and retiring man and had not expected to become king as his elder brother Edward was next in line. However Edward abdicated because he wanted to marry Mrs. Simpson, an American divorcee, and the king was not permitted to marry a divorced person. George had a terrible stammer and sought help from a speech therapist called Lionel Logue.

The most taxing task he had ahead was the King's Christmas radio broadcast which had been started by his Father George V. Lionel and George worked together on his speech and become close friends, a friendship which endured until King George died.

Helena Bonham Carter who played Queen Elizabeth was at the time working on a "Harry Potter" film and had to reluctantly refuse the part, but so keen was the director to have her on board that he arranged to shoot the movie only at week-ends. George VI, his wife Elizabeth and his daughters Elizabeth and Margaret became very popular with the public, especially when they refused to flee to Canada during the second world war.
4. 'Girl With a Pearl Earring' is a story about the imagined relationship between the artist who painted the famous picture, and the servant girl who posed for it. Which artist painted 'The Girl With a Pearl Earring'?

Answer: Vermeer

This movie was directed by Peter Webber and is an adaption of the novel by Tracey Chevalier. Colin Firth plays Vermeer and Scarlett Johansson plays the servant girl. The movie was shot in the winter in Ghent when the weather was often minus 15 degrees.

Some mornings bulldozers had to be brought in to break the ice on the canals. Vermeer's house was recreated in a studio and was a very authentic reproduction. This helped the actors to feel that they were really in that world and time. The painting is in the collection of Mauritshuis at the Hague.

In 2006 the Dutch public selected it as the most beautiful painting in the Netherlands.
5. At the end of the movie 'Easy Virtue' Colin Firth and his on screen daughter in law dance together at a ball before driving off into the sunset. What dance do they perform?

Answer: Tango

This is a delightfully funny yet sad movie about a young English aristocrat who meets a blond bombshell, American racing driver, marries her and takes her back to his shabby ancestral home in England. It is based on a play by Noel Coward in which he mercilessly attacks the British aristocracy, but the movie version has toned down the venom. Colin Firth plays the young man's father, and Kristin Scott Thomas plays his mother. Jessica Biel plays the beautiful and glamourous American wife, and Ben Barnes, her husband, the son of the house. Kristin Scott Thomas was not at all keen to accept this part and she took a lot of persuading, even once shooting had started she was quite unhappy for the first couple of weeks and then she began to enjoy it. Colin Firth is not a dancer and the tango had to be shot in short clips and then pieced together.

The team had only seven weeks to shoot the entire movie.
6. Colin plays a fanatical football fan in 'Fever Pitch'. Which team does he support?

Answer: Arsenal

Colin Firth plays Paul, a thirty something school teacher who has one passion in life, football. This does not always sit well with his girlfriend played by Ruth Gemmell. His team Arsenal, who have been disappointing him for years, begin to do well in the 1988/89 season.

The movie is loosely based on Nick Hornby's memoir 'Fever Pitch - A Fan's Life', and Hornby wrote the screenplay for the movie. The scenes when Arsenal emerge triumphant and win the cup are very heart warming.
7. Colin Firth appeared in the movie 'Shakespeare in Love'. The actress who played Queen Elizabeth I won an Oscar for best supporting actress for her performance in this movie. Who was this actress?

Answer: Judi Dench

'Shakespeare in Love' is a charming comedy which depicts a romance between Shakespeare and Violet a young lady who loves the theatre during the time when he was writing Romeo and Juliet. Judi Dench was awarded an Oscar for best supporting actress for her portrayal of Queen Elizabeth I. Dame Judi is not new to playing Queens of England because she played Queen Victoria in the wonderful movie 'Mrs Brown' based on the friendship between the Queen and a Scottish Gilly called Brown, which helped her back to life after the death of her husband Prince Albert.

More recently she played Victoria again in the film 'Victoria and Abdul' based on the friendship she had with a young Indian clerk.
8. In the 2007 'St. Trinian's' movie, Colin Firth's character Geoffrey Thwaites, the minister for education, is an old flame of Camilla Fritton, the head mistress. Who played Miss Fritton?

Answer: Rupert Everett

St Trinian's is a mad and terrible, fictional school in England, the creation of cartoonist Ronald Searle. The juniors are often fiercely brandishing hockey sticks and the senior girls drink, gamble and engage in various other illegal activities. Rupert Everett, who plays Miss Fritton, is a popular English actor.

He was nominated for a BAFTA for his performance in 'My Best Friend's Wedding' and again for 'An Ideal Husband'. Rupert has appeared in many other successful movies including 'The Madness of King George', 'Shakespeare in Love' and 'A Midsummer's Night Dream'. Everett has also written several books including two volumes of memoirs and the screenplay of the biopic 'Wilde'.
9. In 'Hope Springs' Colin is an British artist who travels to a town called Hope in Vermont USA after a split with his girlfriend. How does she tell him that he is dumped?

Answer: She sends him an invitation to her wedding to another man.

Colin plays the sad artist Colin whose girlfriend Vera (played by Minnie Driver) has broken up with him. The story is based on the novel 'New Cardiff' by Charles Webb and the film is directed by Mark Herman. Also appearing are Mary Steenburgen, who plays Joanie the rather eccentric manager of the hotel where Colin stays and Heather Graham who plays Joanie's friend Mandy who is called in by Joannie to talk to Colin because she is a therapist and he is so obviously in a bad place. Colin forms a relationship with Mandy, but later in the movie his ex turns up and wants him back. Who will he choose Vera or Mandy?
10. The Colin Firth movie 'The Railway Man' is based on the autobiography by Eric Lomax, which has the same title. Who played Eric Lomax's wife in the movie?

Answer: Nicole Kidman

The story is about Eric Lomax's wartime experience of being a prisoner of the Japanese and used as slave labour to build the Thai Burma railway. He makes a radio which helps to cheer himself and his workmates with news. When this is discovered by the Japanese he is horribly tortured.

This affects him for many years after and Nicole Kidman plays his very supportive and understanding wife. Nicole is an Australian actress and producer. She has won many awards including an Academy Award and Golden Globes.

She has appeared in many other successful movies including 'The Others' 'Cold Mountain' and 'Rabbit Hole'.
