Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Who wrote the screenplay for "Team America: World Police" (2004)?

Answer: Trey Parker and Matt Stone

Matt Stone and Trey Parker are the geniuses behind "South Park", which debuted on Comedy Central in 1997. It has been one of the most successful animated programs of all time. "Team America" was their fifth film, including a feature length work based on "South Park" (1999). They have won multiple Emmy Awards for "South Park" and both Tony and Grammy Awards for their Broadway musical "The Book of Mormon" (2011).
"Team America" follows a group of special counter-terrorism agents who spread destruction on a global scale in their pursuit of terrorists. The hero of the story is an actor named Gary Johnston, who is recruited to infiltrate the terrorists. They later discover that North Korean dictator Kim Jong-Il is behind a scheme to destroy the world.
Seth MacFarlane created "Family Guy" (began 1999). Mike Judge is the creator of both "Beavis and Butthead" (1993-2011) and "King of the Hill" (1997-2010). Academy Award winning director Brooks and Matt Groening are the geniuses behind "The Simpsons" (began 1989). Quick lesson for film students - Want to keep working? Go animated.
2. Where is Gary when he sings the song "Freedom isn't Free"?

Answer: Washington D.C.

After turning down Team America's offer, Gary heads to Washington D.C. He sings "Freedom isn't Free", which is a parody of many of the jingoistic country songs that came out in the wake of 9/11. Gary can be seen at the Lincoln and Jefferson Memorials, the Iwo Jima Memorial, Arlington Cemetery, the Korean and Vietnam War Memorials, the US Capitol and the Supreme Court building. According to Trey Parker, the price of freedom is $1.05 (a "buck o five").
3. What promise does Gary make to Lisa so that she will have sex with him?

Answer: That he will never die

Lisa's former lover, Carson, was killed literally minutes after he proposed. A burned Lisa insists that Gary promise that he will never die. Gary then says, "I promise I will never die." What follows is one of the most bizarre sex scenes in any film ever, all to the tune of a ballad called "Only A Woman".
4. What is the name of the country that Team America believes the Arabic terrorists are from?

Answer: Derka-Derkastan

Gary used "Derka Derka" as a gibberish Arabic phrase when he was speaking with the terrorists on Bakalakadakah Street.
5. What is the first world landmark that Team America destroys?

Answer: Eiffel Tower

The first battle with terrorists takes place in Paris, and Team America succeeds in defeating the terrorists while blowing up the Eiffel Tower and the Louvre. They destroy the pyramids during a raid on Cairo, and Michael Moore blows up Mount Rushmore.
6. In "Team America: World Police" (2004), North Korean dictator Kim Jong-Il sings a song about being what?

Answer: Lonely

Trey Parker gives Kim an exaggerated accent, and pronounces lonely as "rone-ry".
"There's no one, Just me onry, Sitting on my rittle throne, I work rearry hard and make up great prans" is an example of exactly how exaggerated they made the accent. Kim Jong-Il, who arguably did very little to help the people of North Korea during his lifetime, is played as a Bond-like villain in "Team America", until the final reveal that he is actually an extra-terrestrial cockroach.
7. "Team America: World Police" (2004) contains a song that details the failings of what Ben Affleck film?

Answer: Pearl Harbor

"Pearl Harbor" was the lampooned film. "I need you more than Ben Affleck needs acting school" is one of the lines. The song also questions the abilities of producer Michael Bay, but enjoys Cuba Gooding, Jr's performance. Affleck's acting abilities were in serious doubt in 2004, as he had won the Golden Raspberry Award for Worst Actor for the trifecta of "Gigli", "Daredevil" and "Paycheck".
Despite all the criticism, "Pearl Harbor" actually did win an Academy Award, for its sound editing. "Team America" did not receive any Academy Award nominations.
8. As Team America prepares to do battle with the Film Actors Guild, what song by Tomoyasu Hotei is playing?

Answer: Battle Without Honor or Humanity

"Battle Without Honor or Humanity" was originally written for the 2001 Japanese film "Shin Jinginaki Tatakai". It is most famous as the entrance march for O-Ren Ishi in "Kill Bill: Volume 1" (2003) and was also used in "Transformers" (2007). "Battle Funktastic" was not released until January 2006, so it would have been hard for Stone and Parker to use it.
9. In "Team America: World Police" what is Matt Damon's only line?

Answer: Matt Damon

After the atttack on Cairo, a group of Hollywood celebrities led by Alec Baldwin form a coalition. Damon is one of the members. In a TV appearance, all he can say is "Matt Damon". He repeats it twice at a conference of celebrities. George Clooney, Liv Tyler, Martin Sheen, Susan Sarandon, Tim Robbins and Janeane Garofalo, all well known liberals, are among the other members of the coalition. According to the DVD, the Damon character was initially supposed to be intelligent, but the puppet wound up looking very stupid.

At that point, Stone and Parker decided to make him a one-note character, much like Timmy on "South Park". Both Damon and George Clooney are reportedly friends of Stone and Parker, and Clooney stated that he would have been offended if they didn't put him in the film.
10. What film director shows up at Team America headquarters and blows it up?

Answer: Michael Moore

Moore is depicted as a fat slob constantly stuffing his face. He is armed with a vest bomb, and commits suicide to destroy the headquarters of Team America. Moore first became famous with "Roger and Me" (1989), a documentary about the decline of the auto industry in Flint, Michigan. Moore won an Academy Award for his documentary on gun violence, "Bowling for Columbine" (2002).
