 10 Things I Hate About You is based on Shakespeare's Taming of a Shrew, which is set in Padua in Italy.

 Brian was in detention for bringing a gun to school. It was a flare gun and it went off in his locker. He was planning on shooting himself with it because he couldn't make the elephant lamp work in shop class.
