Tell Me - "What's New Pussycat?" Quiz

One of my top 20 comedy films. Some of the actors were just starting out in films in 1965 and look how they progressed to be great film stars. It is classed as a sex comedy but seems quite mild nowadays. Great acting and a good laugh was had by all.

Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Michael James is the main character in this comedy of a notorious womaniser. He is portrayed by which famous actor, who was born 1932 in Ireland and was then brought up in Leeds, Yorkshire? One of his most famous films was playing a man called Lawrence.

Answer: Peter O'Toole

Peter started his working life at "The Yorkshire Evening Post" as a journalist. Luckily for us he decided he wanted to be an actor and how glad we all are he did change his employment. Peter died on 14th December 2013.
2. Who plays the stalker and besotted psychiatrist Dr Fritz Fassbender? He also talked his way through a version of the Beatles song "A Hard Day's Night" in 1965.

Answer: Peter Sellers

Peter Sellers was lucky to be given this acting part of Dr Fassbender as the original choice for this character was going to be Groucho Marx. Peter recorded "A Hard Day's Night" by the Beatles and in a video of the song wore what looks like the same wig as Dr Fassbender.
3. The theme song "What's New Pussycat" was written by which of the following duos? They also composed "Here I Am" which was sung by Dionne Warwick in this film.

Answer: Bacharach and David

Tom Jones was chosen to sing this song and it reached number three in the singles chart. Bacharach and David wrote a few songs for Dionne Warwick including "Anyone Who Had A Heart".
4. The beautiful German actress Romy Schneider plays the fiancée of Michael James. What is the name she was called many, many times by Michael in the film? Neil Sedaka wrote a song about a girl with a similar name.

Answer: Carole

One of the on going jokes in the movie is Michael calling her name after every dalliance with another woman. Romy died quite young aged 43 after a heart attack.
5. Which American actress plays a stripper called Liz and is a neurotic follower of Michael James? She was also one of "The Stepford Wives".

Answer: Paula Prentiss

Paula is a very tall lady. In her early career she appeared in four films with Jim Hutton because he was 6ft 5inches tall. One of these films was "Where the Boys Are". She married the actor Richard Benjamin in 1961.
6. Woody Allen plays a hilarious character with unrequited love for his friend and co-worker, played by Romy Schneider. What is the character's name? The actor with the surname Mature shared the same first name.

Answer: Victor

Woody Allen plays Victor with such zest which makes his character so funny and likeable. It could also be because he wrote the script. What a great first film script to write. Of course, he continued with a long career in films.
7. Wearing something like a bikini, which James Bond beauty appears as one of the love interests of Michael James? This time she does not come out of the sea.

Answer: Ursula Andress

Ursula manages to spend most of the film in her underwear covered up occasionally by a fur coat. Not much was spent on that wardrobe. Ursula of course wore her bikini in the film "Dr No".
8. What is the word missing at the end of the line in the song "What's New Pussycat"? "So go and powder your cute little pussycat ______."

Answer: Nose

To powder your nose has other connotations nowadays but it was relevant in the 1960s to stop any shine on your face. I do not think Hal David wrote the words to mean anything other than go to the bathroom, where Liz the stripper spends a lot of her time.
9. Which famous actor who was known as a heavy drinker plays a cameo role as a man at the bar in a strip club? One of his previous films saw him in a toga as Mark Anthony and the man Cleopatra killed herself for.

Answer: Richard Burton

Richard Burton was a famous actor and of course was twice the husband of Elizabeth Taylor. He died at 58 after a heavy
drinking session. He was alleged to have smoked 100 cigarettes a day and near the end of his life up to four bottles of liquor a day. A sad demise for a great actor with a great voice.
10. How does Ursula Andress as Rita first meet Michael James? A large amount of fabric is involved.

Answer: She is a parachutist and lands in his open sports car as he travels to a hotel.

Ursula is one of many beautiful women in this film. The idea that a beautiful parachutist would land in the car of a womaniser was part of the plot of how alluring women thought Michael James was. Ursula had previously appeared in "Dr No" where she is first seen emerging from the sea carrying sea shells and was just wearing her bikini.
