Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In London, the film begins as hero, Hannay, a visitor from Canada, attends a stage show featuring Mr. Memory. He meets a mysterious woman who needs help. They go to his flat and she tells him her name, what name did she give?

Answer: Annabella Smith

The film lets us understand that Smith is not her real name, and the mystery begins.

Hannay is played by the noted actor, Robert Donat, who is probably best remembered for "Goodbye, Mr. Chips".
2. The woman asks him if he has heard of something called "the 39 Steps," he hasn't. Later, she is murdered in his flat, holding a map of Scotland. She had told him she was going there. Why was she going?

Answer: To foil a spy's plans

Being a Hitchcock film, there must be an exciting reason for the woman to be going on a trip, especially since she is murdered.

Lucie Mannheim plays Annabella "Smith", an espionage agent. It is a small role, but very essential, and she is quite effective.
3. Hannay must be clever when leaving his flat, for Annabella had warned him that he would be murdered, too. He sees men outside waiting to kill him. Why don't they see or recognize him?

Answer: He is dressed as a milkman

Hannay meets the milkman in the hall and tries to tell him what happened. He convinced the milkman with a lie, when the truth wasn't believed. The milkman gives Hannay his milkman outfit and his horse and cart, and he drives safely away.
4. Hannay decides to find the 39 Steps, and the spy. By now he is being hunted for the murder of Annabella. He decides to take the train to make his way where?

On the map of Scotland which Annabella had, a town was circled. He managed to get on the train without being detected.
5. On the train, he meets a beautiful blonde woman whose name turns out (later) to be Pamela. He wants her help, but instead, she tries to turn him in. Who Plays the role of Pamela?

Answer: Madeleine Carroll

Madeleine Carroll started her career in 1928 silents, but it was her wonderful
performance in "The 39 Steps" that brought her to international renown. The film did the same for Alfred Hitchcock.
6. Hannay is chased over rough country, on foot, by policemen and by helicopter. He finds and enters an estate, pretending to be there on business. As he talks with the owner, he notices that the man had the same physical detail that Annabella had told him the spy had. What was it?

Answer: Missing part of a finger

Before her death, Annabella had described the spy, who intended to sell British secrets to an enemy. She told him the spy was missing part of one pinky finger.
7. The estate owner sees that Hannay suspects him and confesses that he is indeed, the spy. Then he shoots Hannay but Hannay isn't injured (although he pretends to be). What saved Hannay?

Answer: A hymn book in his breast pocket

Earlier, during his running, Hannay had stayed at a farmer's place. The farmer's wife liked him and gave Hannay her husband's dark overcoat so he wouldn't be spotted in the dark. The farmer was a churchgoing man, although he had lied to Hannay and didn't help him.
8. Hannay goes on the run again, this time he ducks into a hall where there is a political meeting. The people there think he is representing a candidate, what does Hannay do?

Answer: Makes a speech

He does meet Pamela again there, but they don't dance. Instead, he goes to the front and makes a very inventive speech. His speech causes a stir, which he
wanted, because the police have arrived.
9. He meets Pamela at the hall, she calls the police and somehow they get handcuffed together. They are able to ditch the police, and since they are handcuffed together, she must go on the run with him. More running follows - over land, under a waterfall, and to an old inn. At the inn, Pamela hears two spies talking - what clue does she hear?

Answer: Meet someone at the London Palladium

At the inn Pamela slips out of the handcuff while Hannay sleeps. As she tries to leave, she hears the spies talking on the phone, and realized Hannay has been telling the truth and decides that together they would catch the spies.
10. The clue told them where the spies would be. When Hannay and Pamela got there, the police (whom Pamela had told) soon surrounded the place. Hannay spots the spy, and due to one key figure performing, Hannay figures the whole plot out. Who is the key figure?

In the audience, Hannay asks Mr. Memory what the 39 Steps are. He tells and is about to reveal the secret plans, when the estate owner shoots him. Mr. Memory lives long enough to tell the police the secret plans that the spies made him memorize. In the closing shot we see Hannay and Pamela's hands...each holding the other's.
