Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Why is Thomas upset with having to wait two years before joining The Continentals?

Answer: The war could be over by then.

After Gabriel joins up with The Continentals in Charlestown, we see Thomas trying on an old redcoat of his father's. Benjamin Martin comes in and tells him to put it away and says "Not yet, Thomas, not yet." Thomas asks "When?" Benjamin Martin says "Two years." Thomas replies with "But the war could be over by then!" Before leaving the room, Benjamin Martin says "Oh God be willing. Put it away."
2. Why does Nathan say that he is glad, after the family moves to Aunt Charlotte's?

Answer: He has killed British soldiers.

After Thomas is killed, Gabriel taken captive by the British and Benjamin Martin's house is burnt down, Benjamin grabs all his guns and rifles from his house and runs out into the forest along with Nathan and Samuel. Benjamin plans to ambush the British in order to free Gabriel. Nathan and Samuel are told to wait for their father to shoot first and then start with the officers and work their way down.

After freeing Gabriel and going home to pick up Margaret, William and Susan, the family move out to Aunt Charlotte's.

While putting the kids to bed, Nathan tells Benjamin that he is glad that he has killed "those soldiers".
3. According to Margaret, why does she tell Susan that the North Star is their mother?

Answer: It helps Susan to know that their mother's there.

While Benjamin is saying goodnight to his children he opens the door to Margaret and Susan's bedroom and sees them looking out the window. He hears Margaret telling Susan how to know which star is the North Star and that it's their mother. When he comes in and sits next to Margaret on Margaret and Susan's bed, Margaret tells him that "it helps her to know that Mother's there."
4. Which child do we see teaching their younger siblings to read?

Answer: Margaret

In the beginning of the movie, while a post-rider comes riding onto the farm, we get a glimpse of how daily life on the farm goes along. Gabriel and Thomas have been out hunting, Nathan and Samuel are planting the south field, Susan is watching Benjamin build a rocking chair and Margaret is teaching William to read.
5. Which two children are killed by Colonel Tavington?

Answer: Gabriel and Thomas

After Colonel Tavington orders Gabriel to be taken into custody so he can be hanged for treason, Thomas tries to set him free by fighting the British. This results in Colonel Tavington shooting Thomas in the chest, which Thomas doesn't survive.
Towards the end of the movie, after Anne is burnt inside the church, Gabriel sets out after the Dragoons to get revenge. Gabriel does shoot Colonel Tavington but the wound isn't fatal. Gabriel then goes to stab Tavington but gets stabbed himself, resulting in a fatal wound in the stomach.
6. Which siblings does Gabriel blame for putting ink in Anne's tea when she was eleven?

Answer: Nathan and Samuel

While in Pembroke, Gabriel goes to introduce himself to Anne and asks if it isn't Anne. Anne replies coldly with "You know who I am, Gabriel Martin, when I was eleven you put ink in my tea and it turned my teeth black for a month!" Gabriel acts all innocent and replies with "That must have been one of my younger siblings. Perhaps Samuel or Nathan?"
7. After Benjamin throws around broken rocking chairs, which child is, supposedly, the cause of his bad conscience?

Answer: Susan

Benjamin has a problem with building rocking chairs and gets frustrated after they collapse. We see him throwing broken rocking chairs around inside the shed in the beginning of the movie. Samuel starts laughing and is pulled away by Nathan. Benjamin turns around with a broken piece of wood in his hand when he notices Susan who shakes her head at him.

When Benjamin sees Susan shaking her head, he looks down and lowers the broken piece of wood in his hand.
8. What is William doing the first time we see him in the movie?

Answer: Learning to read.

This question refers to the same scene as question four, where Margaret is teaching William to read. This scene with Margaret and William on the porch is the first time either of them is shown in the movie. Margaret is showing William a card with a letter on it and asks him what letter it is. William answers "An R." Margaret replies with "Good."
9. Which child is the first to notice the post-rider?

Answer: Nathan

This scene is in the beginning of the movie. First shown is Nathan telling Samuel that there's a post-rider and Samuel then stands up and turns around. Afterwards we see Gabriel and Thomas coming out of the trees and Abigail with Margaret and William on the porch.
10. In the very last scene of the movie, something is different about the children, other than that two of his sons have died. What is this difference?

Answer: Benjamin and Charlotte have a baby.

In the beginning of the movie, Benjamin Martin has seven children: Gabriel, Thomas, Nathan, Margaret, Samuel, William and Susan. After Colonel Tavington shoots Thomas, Benjamin Martin has six children left. After Colonel Tavington stabs Gabriel, Benjamin Martin has five children left. Throughout the movie, we see a romance blossoming between Benjamin and Aunt Charlotte and in the final scene where the family rides home, Aunt Charlotte is holding a baby in her arms.
