Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. According to Benjamin Martin, why is he a patriot?

Answer: He is angry about taxation without representation.

Benjamin Martin reveals this at the beginning of the movie during the meeting where they are discussing whether or not South Carolina should go to war alongside Massachusetts and seven other colonies.

Benjamin refuses to agree to let South Carolina go to war which leads to a man saying: "I understood you to be a patriot". Benjamin replies with: "If by being a patriot you mean, am I angry about taxation without representation? Then, yes I am. Am I willing to go to war with England, then the answer is most certainly no."
2. Why does Colonel Tavington order the British to burn down the Martin house?

Answer: If you harbor the enemy, you will lose your home.

A battle comes close to the Martin house at night and Gabriel goes there for care. In the morning, when Gabriel wakes up, the front porch is filled with wounded soldiers. Both blue- and redcoats. O'Hara comes to take the wounded redcoats away and thanks Benjamin for the care of the king's soldiers. Just at that moment, the Dragoons (led by Tavington) ride up. Tavington immediately says the following: "Fire the house and barns. Let it be known that if you harbor the enemy, you will lose your home."

Tavington, later on, gets the nickname "The Butcher".
3. Which of Benjamin's men does Dan Scott have a problem with?

Answer: Occam

Occam is a black slave. Dan Scott is obviously one of those whites who, in the 1770s, believe in the blacks being slaves. On several occasions he says things that suggest that he is against the blacks. Those things include amongst others: "First they are gonna free 'em (blacks), and then they are gonna pay 'em (blacks)" and "I don't like the idea of giving weapons to slaves".

Even though Dan Scott had been looking down upon Occam during the most of the movie, Occam saves Dan Scott's life at one point.

In the final battle against the British, Dan Scott and Occam talk(just before the first shot is fired), which shows how Dan changes during the course of the war:
Dan Scott: "It's October now."
Occam: "I know."
Dan Scott: "That's more than 12 months. You are a free man."
Occam: "I am here now on my own accord."
Dan Scott: "I am honored to have you with us. Honored."
4. Which of Benjamin's children is going through a phase in the beginning of the movie, where the child doesn't speak?

Answer: Susan

During most of the movie, Susan is the youngest Martin child. Benjamin's wife dies when Susan is probably just a baby. According to her older sister, Margaret, it might seem to be because she misses and needs her mother. This theory is supported by the fact that Susan starts speaking again, while she, her sister and brothers are staying with their mother's sister, Charlotte.

The first time we hear Susan speak is after Charlotte's plantation is burned down and Gabriel and John Billings are escorting Charlotte and the children to the island where their former slaves are living. Gabriel and Charlotte are talking about Benjamin and Susan asks: "Where is father?"
5. Why is Lord Cornwallis unhappy with Colonel Tavington?

Answer: Tavington uses brutal tactics.

Quote from Cornwallis: "You serve me and the manner in which you serve me, reflects upon me!"

According to Cornwallis, King George of England isn't just interested in victory but also the way the war is fought. Therefore, Tavington's brutal tactics had to stop. Tavington kills everyone who stands in his way and burns down numerous buildings in order to succeed. During battles, Tavington plays his own game and doesn't wait for Cornwallis' order.
6. Who tells Occam that there is no New World?

Answer: Gabriel

According to Gabriel, people call this The New World, but it isn't, it is the same as the old, but together they can change it.

During the very last scene, the Martin family is returning home. There they find Benjamin's men building a house for the family. Occam walks up to Benjamin and says that Gabriel says they can change the world after the war, so he and the rest of the surviving militia are thinking that they will start with Benjamin's home.
7. According to Benjamin, who is the 'bigger man' (or men)?

Answer: His sons

After Benjamin kills 20 British soldiers, Tavington is very obsessed with killing Benjamin in revenge. After not only Thomas is killed but also Gabriel, Tavington's feelings toward Benjamin becomes mutual.

During the final battle, Tavington stands behind Benjamin and says: "Look who's the bigger man."
Just before Benjamin kills Tavington he says that his sons are better men.
8. Which event leads to John Billings shooting himself?

Answer: Tavington killing his wife and son

John Billings is one Benjamin Martin's men, and all he has is his wife and his little boy. Tavington, in rage over Benjamin, tries every possibility to get to Benjamin.
Earlier on in the movie, Tavington burns down the plantation which is owned by Benjamin's sister-in-law who is taking care of Benjamin's children, in hope of getting to the children.
Next, he provokes Benjamin, at Fort Carolina, while Benjamin is under the protection of the white flag which he rides in under, in hopes of Benjamin showing signs of aggression.
Later on, Tavington gets a list of some Benjamin's men and is burning down houses until someone reveals the Militia's hiding place and he attacks, killing whomever resists. This is the breaking point for John Billings, as his wife and son are among the victims.
9. What gets Benjamin back in the mood to fight the British after Gabriel is killed?

Answer: He finds the American flag which Gabriel is fixing.

Losing Gabriel comes as a big shock for Benjamin. Gabriel is Benjamin's first-born. By then, Benjamin has run his course and is done fighting in the war. The militia then ride off with the regulars, so Benjamin can bury his son. Benjamin then picks up Gabriel's bag in which he finds an American flag, that Gabriel is fixing throughout the movie.

He then rides up to the soldiers with the flag. His men greet him with yelling: "Hooray!" several times.
10. According to Jean Villeneuve, what name is a good name for a farmer?

Answer: Gabriel

After Gabriel is killed, Colonel Harry Burwell tells Benjamin that his wife in Alexandria is with child and that is his first born.
After the French arrive and England surrenders, Harry tells Benjamin that he and his wife name their son Gabriel. Afterward Jean adds that he thinks Gabriel is a good name for a farmer and Benjamin agrees.
