Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What is Jean's rank?

Answer: Major

Jean is introduced to Martin as Major Jean Villenueve.
2. What infantry division in France does Jean serve in?

Answer: French Seventh Lightfoot

Major Jean Villanueve of the French Seventh Lightfoot, an infantry division of the French standing army, which was actually a real division of the French Army up until sometime in the 1880's.
3. Jean first refers to Martin as what?

Answer: The hero of fort wilderness

Jean says: "The hero of fort wilderness. Your reputation preceeds you."

It is very obvious that Jean knows what happened, and he greatly dislikes Martin because of it. I don't understand what he means when he says that his reputation PRECEEDS him, as we would expect him to have a bed reputation in France, but clearly, Jean dislikes him at first.
4. When Martin asks Jean if he has children, Jean says, "I did once."

Answer: False

Jean does not answer Martin. He rides away in silence. Martin replies smugly: "French?!"

Quite disrespetful.
5. What is Jean's response to Gabriel's claim that the Redcoats were about to surrender?

Answer: "Perhaps. Now we will never know."

His statement sounds harsh and cruel, but it reveals his hidden sense of humor, and proves that he has been hurt by the British, and he wants revenge just as much as Martin does. It creates a subliminal link between them.
6. Why doesn't Jean like Martin's decision to quarter British wounded/surrendered?

Answer: A British soldier killed his wife and daughters

"Did British man-of-war offer such quarter when he fired on the ship carrying my wife and daughters? I watched from two-hundred yards away as they were burned alive!"

This outburst explains why Jean doesn't answer Martin when he asks if he has children. Poor Jean.
7. Does Jean accept Martin's sympathy when he reveals what happened to his family?

Answer: No

Jean is angered by the fact that Martin would say that, after what he did to the French in the French and Indian War, because he doesn't believe Martin can understand sympathy. He challenges his authority.
8. What does Jean say to Martin after Gabriel leaves to go find Tavington? (The scene in which they find the burned-down church, after Anne's death.)

Answer: "Gabriel is gone."

Martin finds the pendant/medallion he gave Anne (the North Star) and turns to give it to Gabriel. Jean meets his eyes and says simply "Gabriel is gone."

This is perhaps the first semi-sympathetic move that Jean makes towards Martin.
9. Jean's impression/attitude towards Martin changes dramatically after Gabriel's death?

Answer: True

You can tell by the look on Jean's face as he sees Martin at Gabriel's side crying, just before the camera fades out. At this point, Jean realizes that they have both lost children at the hands of the Britsh, and, after seeing Martin crying at his son's side, decides that Martin was still only human. Jean here forgives him for what he did to the French at Fort Wilderness. The two are on friendly terms after this..
10. How many children did Jean have?

Answer: 2

He had two little girls; Violette and Pauleen.
