Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which tense Steve McQueen movie starred Ali MacGraw as his wife, and also featured Al Lettieri and Ben Johnson?

Answer: The Getaway (1972)

"The Getaway" told the story of a married couple on the run, following a bank robbery. It was also the movie where McQueen met his second wife Ali MacGraw. Slim Pickens also starred, as the pick up driver who helped McQueen and MacGraw drive off into the sunset. He starred with McQueen in one of his very last films, "Tom Horn" (1980.)
2. Which film starred Steve McQueen as Captain Virgil Hilts, alongside Richard Attenborough, Charles Bronson and James Garner, amongst other members of an all star cast?

Answer: The Great Escape (1963)

"The Great Escape" featured the true story of a POW breakout during World War II. As well as playing Hilts, McQueen rode a motorcycle as a German soldier chasing Hilts - so in essence McQueen was actually chasing himself!
3. Karl Malden, Martin Landau and Arthur Kennedy starred as a group of murderous outlaws in which Steve McQueen film?

Answer: Nevada Smith (1966)

McQueen played the title role of a young man hunting the three outlaws who had murdered his parents. The film was a prequel to "The Carpetbaggers" (1964) where the role of Nevada Smith had been played by Alan Ladd. Ladd sadly died before "The Carpetbaggers" was released.
4. Which Steve McQueen movie was set in China and also starred Candice Bergen, Richard Attenborough and Richard Crenna?

Answer: The Sand Pebbles (1966)

Based on the novel by Richard McKenna, "The Sand Pebbles" featured McQueen as a member of the US Navy onboard a gunboat in 1920s China. The film also starred Marayat Andriane as Attenborough's love interest. She was better known for creating the erotic fiction character Emmanuelle, under the pen name Emmanuelle Arsan.
5. Which Steve McQueen movie also starred Faye Dunaway, Jack Weston and Paul Burke, and was subject to a remake in 1999?

Answer: The Thomas Crown Affair (1968)

McQueen played Thomas Crown, the mastermind behind a bank robbery. Dunaway was the insurance investigator who ended up falling for him. It was perhaps best known for an iconic chess scene between McQueen and Dunaway, which was actually a replay of the 1899 Grand Masters Match in Vienna.
6. Which Steve McQueen film featured one of cinema's greatest car chases and also starred Robert Vaughn, Jacqueline Bisset and Don Gordon?

Answer: Bullitt (1968)

"Bullitt" was a thriller starring McQueen as a San Francisco police lieutenant, investigating the murder of a Mafia witness he was protecting. The famous car chase featured the driving talents of stunt driver Bill Hickman. He would go on to stage another of cinema's great chases in "The French Connection" (1971).
7. Which early Steve McQueen movie also featured Robert Vaughn, Charles Bronson and Eli Wallach?

Answer: The Magnificient Seven (1960)

This now classic Western followed a group of seven men hired to protect a Mexican village from bandits. The film also starred James Coburn, who appeared with McQueen in "The Great Escape" (1963) and "Never So Few" (1959).
8. Which film starred Steve McQueen as a poker player, alongside Karl Malden, Edward G. Robinson and Tuesday Weld?

Answer: The Cincinnati Kid (1965)

McQueen played the title role, as a young poker player up against master player Lancey Howard (Edward G. Robinson). The role of McQueen's girlfriend, Christian, played by Weld, had once been a potential role for model and actress Sharon Tate. Tate was close to McQueen and he had been supposed to go to her home for dinner on the night she was murdered by the Manson family.
9. Steve McQueen, Faye Dunaway, Robert Wagner and Robert Vaughn were part of an all star cast in which film?

Answer: The Towering Inferno (1974)

This disaster movie starred McQueen as a fire chief, tackling an out-of-control blaze in the world's tallest building. McQueen had a long standing dislike for Paul Newman, who also starred in "The Towering Inferno". As well as McQueen insisting that they were given exactly the same number of lines, their names were billed diagonally so that McQueen came first, if read left to right and Newman was first, if read top to bottom.
10. Lastly, which of Steve McQueen's later movies starred Eli Wallach, Ben Johnson and Levar Burton?

Answer: The Hunter (1980)

"The Hunter" was McQueen's final film and told the story of real life bounty hunter Ralph Thorson. Amongst the films McQueen didn't get the chance to star in was "The Bodyguard" (1992), which was made over a decade after his death with Kevin Costner and Whitney Houston. The film was due to have starred McQueen with Diana Ross.
