Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The bikini bottom was black, the t-shirt was white, but what color was Gail's scuba tank?

Answer: yellow

Gail Berke's tank was yellow; David Sanders' tank was blue. Gail and David were played by Jacqueline Bisset and Nick Nolte.
2. Gail would have been happy to just enjoy their vacation. However, David was more adventurous. On the night of the first dive with Treece, David wore a t-shirt that seems to fit his adventurous character. What did the t-shirt commemorate?

Answer: Mount Everest Expedition 75

By 1975, hundreds of thrill-seeking mountain climbers had paid thousands of dollars to join Everest expeditions, make the climb and get the t-shirt. High risk adventures like mountain climbing and treasure diving are best left to those who are physically fit and have money to spare. Often the t-shirt is the only reward.

There is no moray eel catch and release tournament, yet.
3. The theme song was nominated for a Golden Globe for 1977. Who sang it?

Answer: Donna Summer

Donna Summer sang the theme song "Down Deep Inside". The music was composed by John Barry and was nominated for a Golden Globe Award for 1977. Other nominees for best original song that year were "New York, New York", "How Deep Is Your Love?", and "Nobody Does It Better". The winner was "You Light Up My Life" by Joseph Brooks.

Keely Smith sang "The Whippoorwill" in the movie "Thunder Road".
Ella Fitzgerald won 4 Golden Globes, 13 Grammys and sold 40 million albums.
4. Romer Treece, played by Robert Shaw, was a local historian and treasure-hunter. What was his other occupation?

Answer: lighthouse-keeper

This was the second movie based on a Peter Benchley book in which Robert Shaw has played a major role. In "Jaws" he played the part of Quint, the shark hunter.
5. How was the morphine packaged?

Answer: in small glass ampules

The amber liquid filled vials seemed to dance as they were released into the ocean and the sand was removed by the suction dredge.
6. The shipwreck that David and Gail were diving on was the Goliath, a World War II ship that carried munitions and medical supplies. As it turned out, the wreck was sitting on top of another wreck. What was the name of the other wreck?

Answer: Griffin

The treasure was not from the Goliath, but from the Griffin. This was an old French tobacco ship that sank in 1715 while trying to sneak back to Europe with the treasure. The Corsair was Treece's boat which was used for the treasure recovery. The Goliath was a World War II ship that had been carrying ammunition and medical supplies.
7. Treasure and other artifacts are worth much more if the origin can be documented. What is the term for this proof?

Answer: provenance

In the movie, provenance was provided by finding a gold dragon with emerald eyes on a gold chain. This item had been described in a book which also identified Isabella Farnese as the planned recipient.
8. What was the name of the drug dealer who was anxious to obtain the morphine? The character was played by Louis Gossett, Jr.

Answer: Henri

Henri Cloche was polite and charming, but also willing to use a little Haitian voodoo and murder to get what he wanted.
9. Adam Coffin was the only survivor of the Goliath and knew about the morphine. How did he meet his end in the movie?

Answer: He tried to steal the morphine and set off explosives.

Treece had hidden the morphine in the lighthouse. However, he had rigged explosives to destroy it if someone tried to break in. Eli Wallach played the part of Coffin.
10. What was the name of the small dive boat that David and Gail were using at the start of the movie?

Answer: Sunkiss

The boat was from the Orange Grove Hotel. Since the wreck they were diving on contained explosives, it was off-limits to divers.
