Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What devilish movie connects the following elements: 1987, Robert DeNiro, New Orleans, Lisa Bonet, and Mickey Rourke?

Answer: Angel Heart

"Angel Heart" was released in 1987 and starred Mickey Rourke as a private investigator hired by a mysterious man to locate a missing nightclub singer. Lisa Bonet, who had been playing Denise Huxtable on the squeaky-clean "The Cosby Show" on television since 1984, played the singer's slinky mistress in New Orleans. Bonet left "The Cosby Show" soon after the release of "Angel Heart". De Niro received praise for his role as Lucifer in the film.
2. The dark fairy tale "Legend" was directed by Ridley Scott and starred Tom Cruise, Mia Sara from "Ferris Bueller's Day Off", and an actor famous for playing Dr. Frank-N-Furter in another film. Can you name him?

Answer: Tim Curry

Tim Curry was already famous from his turn as the manic Dr. Frank-N-Furtner in "The Rocky Horror Picture Show" (1975) when he took the role as the Lord of Darkness in "Legend" (1985). Curry had to wear heavy, uncomfortable prosthetics including horns; it may have been worth it, as the film was nominated for Best Makeup and Best Costume design.
3. With his dramatic delivery style, Jack Nicholson may have been born to play the devil. What was the name of the movie he was in, about his seduction of three women in a small Rhode Island town?

Answer: The Witches of Eastwick

"The Witches of Eastwick" (1987) were played by Cher, Susan Sarandon, and Michelle Pfeiffer against Nicholson's Mephistophelian Daryl Van Horne. After Daryl seduces the women, he turns on them, and they band together to use witchcraft and a Voodoo doll to drive him out of town forever. The film was generally critically appraised and received a BAFTA for Best Special Visual Effects.
4. In 1976 Gregory Peck played an ambassador besieged by demon spawn. Can you name this film, which also spawned multiple sequels?

Answer: The Omen

"The Omen" was a box office and critical success and was the beginning of the Damien Thorn franchise. As the unsuspecting ambassador and his wife raised Damien, they were victims of one frightening and baffling event after another: the child refused to step foot into a church, a nanny inexplicably hanged herself, and a priest was decapitated. Peck's character tries to do his best but is thwarted repeatedly.
5. If you've ever been tempted to utter, "I'd sell my soul to the devil for X," you might think twice if you'd seen the 1941 film about a desperate farmer who makes a deal with the devil. Can you name the film, which starred Walter Huston as the diabolic Mr. Scratch?

Answer: The Devil and Daniel Webster

"The Devil and Daniel Webster" was released by RKO in the U.S. in 1941. After Jabez Stone, played by American James Craig, made an agreement with the devil in the persona of Mr. Scratch, he later took the devil to court to get out of the deal. Walter Huston was nominated for Academy Award for Best Actor as the devilish Mr. Scratch.
6. Arnold Schwarzenegger played a former detective, named Jericho, hired to protect a possessed banker. This movie also starred Gabriel Byrne as the banker, Kevin Pollack as Arnold's partner, and Robin Tunney as the girl Jericho had to protect. Can you name this 1999 film?

Answer: End of Days

"End of Days" had an eclectic cast, with Byrne already with a rather distinguished career and Schwarzenegger known for his "Terminator" movies. It was released to mostly negative reviews and received a few Razzie nominations for worst acting.
7. What 1998 movie starred Brad Pitt as a devilishly handsome young man who woos a doctor and helps her father keep his company?

Answer: Meet Joe Black

We stretched it a bit as Brad Pitt played Death in "Meet Joe Black," not actually the devil. A corporate mogul, played by Anthony Hopkins, made a deal with Death in the form of Brad Pitt's Joe Black -- live a few extra days in exchange for showing Black how mortals really live. "Meet Joe Black" received mix reviews, notably a Razzie award for Worst Remake or Sequel, as it was based on the film "Death Takes a Holiday" which was a critical and box office hit in 1934.
8. The devil didn't appear in the flesh in the following film, but Patricia Arquette's character was possessed by an angry spirit. What was the 1999 movie, named after the phenomenon of having wounds similar to those Jesus bore on the cross, according to "The New Testament"?

Answer: Stigmata

"Stigmata" was released in 1999 and followed the story of a young waitress, played by Patricia Arquette, who experienced idiopathic wounds on her hands, feet, and head. Gabriel Byrne played the priest who investigated this occurrence.
9. Powerhouse director Martin Scorcese directed a film about Jesus Christ that portrayed how Satan, in the form of a beautiful child, tempted Christ to live a normal family life. Can you name this film, which stirred up quite a bit of controversy?

Answer: The Last Temptation of Christ

"The Last Temptation of Christ" was released in the U.S. in 1988. It starred Willem Dafoe as Jesus, Harvey Keitel as Judas, Barbara Hershey as Mary Magdalene, and David Bowie as Pontius Pilate.
10. What was the name of the frightening 1968 movie starring Mia Farrow as a young pregnant wife who slowly discovered that she was carrying Satan's baby?

Answer: Rosemary's Baby

"Rosemary's Baby" became a classic psychological horror film and launched Mia Farrow's career as a leading female actor. She played Rosemary Woodhouse, who moved into an old building in New York with her actor husband. Their neighbors were strangely interested in the Woodhouse's life and, when Rosemary came pregnant, she learned that the father of her baby was not her husband but Satan, and the apartment building was full of Satan-worshippers. "Rosemary's Baby" was rated #9 on the American Film Institute's (2001) List of top 100 thrillers.
