Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. P is for... Of the movies listed below, which one is a 1950 thriller by famed director Elia Kazan about an outbreak of pneumonic plague in New Orleans?

Answer: Panic in the Streets

"Panic in the Streets" was filmed entirely on location in New Orleans and tells the story of Clinton Reed (Richard Widmark), a US government agent for a precursor to the Centers for Disease Control as he attempts to stop an outbreak of the pneumonic plague. The film features Jack Palance in his debut role as well as Tommy Rettig, although Rettig was not credited.

2. E is for Evil... In which film in the "Resident Evil" series does the main character Alice first meet her clones?

Answer: Extinction

In the 2007 movie "Resident Evil: Extinction" the T-virus has gone worldwide affecting all flora and fauna. Alice at the start of the film hears a request for help but this turns out to be a trap set by robbers to lure other survivors to them. She escapes the robbers and joins up with a convoy. After a discussion, the convoy's occupants and Alice head towards Alaska on the belief that there is a safe area. The convoy is attacked and Alice and her allies in the convoy are able to find the Umbrella underground laboratory. While making her way through the lab Alice finds a clone of herself and replicas of the mansion she lived in that featured in the earlier films in the series. At the end of "Resident Evil: Extinction" Alice is seen looking over a vast collection of pods that contain her clones.

3. S is for Satan... "The Satan Bug", brought to the screen by John Sturgess in 1965, was adapted from the works of which prolific author, also responsible for "Ice Station Zebra" and "Where Eagles Dare"?

Answer: Alistair MacLean

A crackpot scientist has discovered a vaccine for the "Satan Bug", a virus that has the potential to destroy every living thing on Earth in only a few short months. He's injected himself with the vaccine, has stolen the virus, and is now prepared to destroy the world so he can live in it alone. It's up to special agent Lee Barrett to save the world.

Despite the film featuring the varied talents of George Maharis, Anne Francis and Dana Andrews it proved to be one of the least successful re-workings of MacLean's novels. At the time MacLean's star was on the rise and "The Satan Bug" (the film) was an attempt to cash in on this and the success of J. Lee Thompson's brilliant adaptation of "The Guns of Navarone" (1961).

4. T is for... Terry Gilliam directs Bruce Willis in this 1995 sci-fi thriller that sends him (Willis) back to the past to destroy a sect that has how many "Monkeys" in its title?

Answer: 12

"12 Monkeys" is set in a bleak future where the Earth's inhabitants are forced to live underground after the world has been devastated by a deadly virus. Willis, as James Cole, is returned to the past with the mission to wipe out the Army of the Twelve Monkeys who, it is believed, were responsible for the release of the virus. Gilliam does an extraordinary job working with a wonderful script from the pens of David and Janet Peoples that possesses a storyline that toys with memories, casts red herrings, and bounces between the future and the years 1990 and 1996. You will need to keep your wits about you if you wish to follow this one.

Brad Pitt, who plays the leader of the cult, Jeffrey Goines, puts in a wildly eccentric performance that earned him an Academy Award nomination for Best Actor in a Supporting Role.

5. I is for... Based on a novel by Richard Matheson, Will Smith seems to be the lone survivor of a virus gone wrong in which post-apocalyptic film?

Answer: I Am Legend

"I Am Legend" is the third variation of the novel of the same name by Richard Matheson. The previous versions were titled "The Last Man on Earth" in 1964 and "The Omega Man" in 1971. Will Smith's version was released in 2007. The story revolves around a virus created to cure cancer that mutates into a killing plague. His character is immune and seems to be the sole survivor, but finds there are virus-created mutants against which he must find a remedy.

"In Harm's Way" (1965) was a story about naval officers during the attack on Pearl Harbor. There were two movies named "Invasion" (1965 and 1999), one about an escaped alien prisoner who is captured by other aliens and held awaiting extradition; the other film is a spoof of alien invasion movies. "It Conquered the World" (1956) has critters from Venus invading Earth and turning Earthlings into zombies in an attempt to make Earth their new home.

6. L is for ... What word finishes these two film titles? "28 Days ___" and "28 Weeks ____" where the Rage virus has affected the human race.

Answer: Later

The Rage virus appeared in the 2002/2003 "28 Days Later" and the 2007 sequel "28 Weeks Later". The virus was transferred from chimpanzees to humans from a single activist being bitten in a research lab. Rage, once contracted, would overwhelm the human in a thirty-second window, turning normal human beings into rage-filled persons capable of mindless murder.

"28 Days Later" featured actors who have gone on to become well known for their roles in other film series. Cillian Murphey went on to play the part of The Scarecrow in Christopher Nolan's "The Dark Knight Trilogy". The actor Brendan Gleeson went on to play the role of Alastor "Mad-Eye" Moody in the series of "Harry Potter" films.

"28 Weeks Later" featured Jeremy Renner who went on to play Hawkeye in "Thor" and "The Avengers". Idris Elba, who starred in the BBC TV series "Luther" and is known for playing the role of Heimdall in the 2011 film "Thor", also appeared in the movie "28 Weeks Later".

7. E is for... The title of which Matt Damon film, a dystopian thriller about a disease-ravaged Earth, comes from the Greek concept of paradise?

Answer: Elysium

"Elysium" tells the story of Max Da Costa (Damon) who is accidentally poisoned on Earth and must find a way to get to Elysium, a space station hovering above Earth, to use a Med-Bay or else he will die in five days. In the end Max dies in his attempt to reach salvation and Elysium but his death is not in vain as the computer program he carried is used to give every citizen of Earth access to the health facilities on Elysium.

8. N is for nosferatu... The word nosferatu in the title of the 1922 film "Nosferatu" means plague-carrier. What is the nature of the creature featured in this film?

Answer: Vampire

Nosferatu comes from the Slavonik term "nosufur-atu" which in turn comes from the Greek term nosphoros, which means plague-carrier. In Western Europe, popular myth surrounding vampires included the idea that they carried disease. In the 1922 film, this legend is visualized by the presence of rats on a ship being brought to the fictional north German town of Wisborg in the early part of the film. What was thought to be the Plague causing deaths actually was the result of the Vampire. Still the Plague looms as a heavy theme in this early (and only) production of the Prana Film studio.

9. C is for "Contagion"... "Contagion" is a 2011 Steven Soderbergh movie with an all-star cast that tells the fictional story of the outbreak of a virus that eventually kills 26 million people. Of the actors listed below, which one's character dies and is later determined to be patient zero?

Answer: Gwyneth Paltrow

Gwyneth Paltrow plays Beth Emhoff, the character whose death leads to the outbreak and who is later determined to be patient zero. Although Kate Winslet's Dr. Erin Mears also dies in the movie, she is not patient zero and merely a casualty of the outbreak. Matt Damon plays Mitch Emhoff, the husband of Beth, who is immune to the virus Beth contracts and brings back to the US after a trip to Hong Kong. Laurence Fishburne plays Dr. Ellis Cheever, a doctor for the CDC. The movie revolves around how the world's governments respond to a virulent outbreak and the toll it takes on ordinary people caught up in it.

10. E is for... In which 1996 John Carpenter film is the protagonist injected with the Plutoxin 7 virus that only gives him ten hours to complete his mission or he will die?

Answer: Escape from LA

"Escape from LA" was the sequel to the 1981 cult hit "Escape from New York". In the movie, Snake (Kurt Russell) is injected with the man-made Plutoxin 7 virus and told if he completes his mission within the ten hour time frame he will be given the antidote. His mission is to retrieve the remote control to the super weapon the 'Sword of Damocles' that has fallen into the hands of revolutionaries in Los Angeles (LA). In the movie, LA has become an island because of an earthquake and is now a penal colony. It turns out the Plutoxin 7 virus is actually just the common flu and was not deadly. Although the common flu is not thought of as a killer, it can be. Throughout history influenza has been one of the deadliest diseases under the right circumstances. For example, the 1918 Spanish Flu pandemic killed between 20 million and 100 million people worldwide.

The movie also stars Steve Buscemi as Map to the Stars Eddie, Peter Fonda as Pipeline, Stacy Keach as Commander Malloy, Bruce Campbell as Surgeon General of Beverly Hills, and Pam Grier as Hershe Las Palmas.
