Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The eponymous protagonist of "Barfi" is a deaf and mute young man living in the hill station of Darjeeling. Set in three different time periods, we first meet the young Barfi when the story slips into flashback mode. What is Barfi doing when the flashback starts?

Answer: Running away from the cops

The opening scene of the flashback sequence in "Barfi" is taken from Buster Keaton's short film "Cops". In both movies, the protagonist is running away from the police and climbs a ladder to cross a wall. Seeing cops on the other side of the wall as well, he finds himself stuck in between trying to balance the ladder on the wall and avoid falling on either side.

Buster Keaton, born Joseph Frank Keaton, was a silent film star well known for his physical slapstick comedy. Apart from being an actor, he was also a director, producer and writer and won an Academy Honorary Award in 1958.
2. Barfi soon falls in love with Shruti, a young girl who moves to Darjeeling when her father is posted there on work. In one of the scenes, the whole town is gathered for the unveiling of the statue of Swami Viveknanda at the town square. If I tell you that the scene is inspired by Charlie Chaplin's film "City Lights", what do you think happens next?

Answer: Barfi is found fast asleep beneath the statue once the covering is removed.

"City Lights" was written and directed by Charlie Chaplin and starred him in the lead role as a tramp who falls in love with a blind girl. The movie opens with the scene where the whole town is gathered for the unveiling of a statue and Chaplin is found sleeping beneath it once the cover is lifted. This same scene is replayed in the movie "Barfi".
3. One day Barfi works up the courage to express his love to Shruti, however she makes it known that she is already engaged. Barfi leaves and a few minutes later, Shruti gets a note from him in which he asks her to look at the town's clock tower. Since we know this scene was inspired by the South Korean film "Lover's Concerto", what follows?

Answer: Barfi is atop the tower moving the hands of the clock behind by 15 minutes.

The note further goes on to ask Shruti to forget all about his proposal. He would move time back to erase those fifteen minutes and thus erase the moments that had upset her. Instead they could now start on a clean slate as just friends.

The premise of this scene is the same as the one in the South Korean movie "Lover's Concerto". The only difference is that in the original film, the protagonist uses a simple wall clock to turn back time instead of climbing a clock tower.
4. Slowly despite her wishes, Shruti finds herself falling in love with Barfi. One night Barfi takes her out on a date. Inspired by the movie "Fried Green Tomatoes", what do the two of them do that night?

Answer: Throw food parcels for the poor from the train

"Fried Green Tomatoes", adapted from Fannie Flagg's book named "Fried Green Tomatoes at the Whistle Stop Cafe", starred Kathy Bates, Jessica Tandy and Mary Stuart Masterson in pivotal roles. The plot centres on the friendship between Idgie and Ruth (a former girlfriend of Idgie's dead brother).

In "Barfi", Barfi takes Shruti along with him on the train while he throws food parcels to the poor who live along the railway tracks.
5. Shruti ultimately works up the courage to tell her mother that she's in love with Barfi and wants to marry him instead of her fiance. Shruti's mom is obviously not pleased with her daughter dating a deaf-mute man who is also not financially well settled. She takes her daughter for a drive to speak to her. Having watched "The Notebook", what happens next?

Answer: Mrs. Ghosh shows Shruti a woodcutter she was in love with as a young girl.

Mrs. Ghosh tells Shruti that as a young girl she was in love with the woodcutter and wanted to marry him despite his poor financial status. Her parents opposed the relationship and later married her off to Shruti's father. Mrs. Ghosh said she never regretted her decision and whenever she returns to Darjeeling she makes it a point to see the woodcutter from afar to remind herself how lucky she was to have escaped this life of penury.

A similar scene is found in "The Notebook" where the mother of the lead actress advises her against dating a poor boy saying she had also walked away from a similar situation in her youth on her parent's insistence.
6. Shruti marries her college boyfriend and moves out of Darjeeling. One night Barfi's father has a heart attack and Barfi desperately needs money for his surgery. Barfi tries to rob the town's bank but the attempt fails. While trying to escape from the cops, he inadvertently ends up rescuing an autistic girl called Jhilmil from her kidnappers. Inspired by the Korean movie "The Classic", what does Barfi use to get close to Jhilmil?

Answer: Fireflies

"The Classic" has two parallel stories running with the love story of the mother told in flashbacks and that of the daughter playing out in the present. In the movie, a romantic scene between both sets of protagonists (in different time periods) involves fireflies in the night.

Barfi finds Jhilmil lying unconscious in a van he hides in while running away from the police. When the kidnappers get out to collect the ransom money, he drives the van away to a nearby forest. In the forest, Barfi blows soap bubbles around fireflies to engage with Jhilmil and after slowly winning her trust, leads her to his house.
7. Barfi knows Jhilmil belongs to the richest family in town and decides to hide her in his house while he collects ransom money. Taking a cue from Gene Kelly in "Singin' in the Rain", what does Barfi use to help Jhilmil settle down and feel comfortable?

Answer: A dummy

Jhilmil is terrified to find herself in unknown surroundings and starts screaming in fear. Barfi manages to calm her down but she then goes and hides behind a wall, still unable to trust him completely. Barfi then plays out a series of comic acts to help her laugh. Among them is a copy of the famous scene involving Gene Kelly and a dummy in the movie "Singin' in the Rain".
8. Jhilmil refuses to return to her family and instead follows Barfi. The two eventually set up house in the nearby city of Kolkata. With an accidental meeting, Shruti re-enters their life. This leads to Jhilmil running away and in a twist, the Darjeeling police arrest Barfi for her disappearance. Knowing this part is Drawn heavily from Ben Affleck's '"Gone, Baby, Gone", is Jhilmil inside the car when it falls into a lake?

Answer: No

Jhilmil is upset about the attention Barfi pays Shruti. She slips away and calls the orphanage where she had grown up and whose caretaker treated her as his own child. When the caretaker learns that she was ill treated by her family, he arranges for a meeting with her father. He learns that the first kidnapping was planned by her own father to take some of her trust fund money. Realising her family needs the money and may seek to harm her again in the future, the caretaker helps her father stage her kidnapping a second time where they pretend Jhilmil dies when the car containing her crashes into the river. In reality, they rescue her from the car before the accident and Jhilmil is taken away to live in the orphanage.

Ben Affleck's "Gone, Baby, Gone" is based on the story of a little girl who is kidnapped by a drug lord after a deal with her mother goes sour. A detective played by Morgan Freeman who is nearing retirement gets involved in the case. The detective and his wife had lost their only daughter years ago after she was murdered to exact revenge on her father. The detective rescues the kidnapped girl from her captors but stages her death by throwing a dummy in the river. He and his wife then adopt the little girl to give her a better life.
9. Barfi manages to locate Jhilmil at the orphanage where they continue to live after their marriage. The ending is narrated by Shruti who informs the audience that Barfi has had a stroke and is hospitalized. This part is also inspired by "The Notebook" and thus, what transpires next?

Answer: Jhilmil and Barfi both die the same night.

Shruti visits Barfi in the hospital and is distraught at seeing him unconscious. Jhilmil comforts her and then lies down with Barfi. We are then shown Jhilmil sharing the hospital bed with Barfi and are told in a voice over by Shruti that they both die in their sleep that night.

In "The Notebook", Noah and Allie are in love with each other and get married despite the odds. Over time though, Allie is afflicted with dementia and forgets her past, including her life with Noah. Noah narrates their romance to her in an effort to help her remember. After reviving her memories, Noah tells Allie that their love is strong enough to 'take them away together'. The next morning, the nurse finds them lying together on the bed having died in their sleep during the night.
10. Which of the following actors is NOT part of the cast for this film?

Answer: Hrithik Roshan

"Barfi" stars Ranbir Kapoor (Barfi), Illeana D'cruz (Shruti) and Priyanka Chopra (Jhilmil) in the lead roles. The movie is directed by Anurag Basu who is also credited with the story and screenplay.

Hrithik Roshan is a well known Hindi film actor who has been a part of hit films like "Kaho Naa Pyaar Hai", "Koi Mil Gaya" and "Agneepath". He also starred in Anurag Basu's earlier film "Kites" which was made in both Hindi and English and bombed in both languages.
