Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Kate plays Rose Sayer. A strait-laced missionary goes on an adventurous boat ride with a gin-loving riverboat captain.

Answer: The African Queen

Kate didn't take home the statue for "African Queen", but, it did earn Humphrey Bogart his one and only Oscar as the gin-swilling captain Charlie Allnut. While filming in Africa, Kate was so put off by the drinking of Bogie and director John Huston that she refused to drink anything but water. Unfortunately, this resulted in dysentery.
2. Kate plays Tracy Lord. On the eve of her wedding, a spoiled socialite has to deal with her ex-husband, a young reporter who is smitten with her, her fiance and a mouthy little sister.

Answer: The Philadelphia Story

"The Philadelphia Story" left Kate empty-handed, however, Jimmy Stewart picked up an Oscar for his role as reporter Macauley 'Mike' Connor. Many believe he received it for his 'no win' the year before as Mr. Smith in "Mr. Smith Goes to Washington". Cary Grant wasn't even nominated for his delightful turn as ex-husband C.K. Dexter Haven. Kate played the role on Broadway.

She enjoyed it so much she bought the movie rights, guaranteeing her the lead role.
3. Kate plays Ethel Thayer. A retired couple live in their cottage on the water. Their distant daughter leaves her stepson one summer. When she returns she discovers that her stepson has earned the attentions of her father that she has so desperately craved.

Answer: On Golden Pond

"On Golden Pond" earned Kate her fourth and last Oscar win. No other actor or actress has achieved this feat. Henry Fonda, as her gruff husband Norman Thayer, won his only acting Oscar in this his next to last movie. Remarkably, this was the only collaboration of these two long lasting super stars.
4. Kate plays Eleanor of Aquitaine. A Christmas get together turns into a web of deception, treachery and imprisonment in an attempt to name the next heir to Henry II's throne.

Answer: The Lion in Winter

The verbal volleyball between Peter O'Toole, as the scheming Henry II, and Kate is unmatched. Excellent! This was Kate's third Oscar win, which she had to share with Barbra Streisand for "Funny Girl" - the only time in Academy Award history actresses had to share an award.

The only other acting tie was at the 1931-1932 awards for Wallace Beery in "The Champ" and Fredric March in "Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde".
5. Kate plays Violet Venable. A wealthy woman wants to keep her son's macabre death a secret. She tries to persuade a neurosurgeon to give her niece - who is a witness to the death - a lobotomy. She offers to build a new wing at the hospital.

Answer: Suddenly, Last Summer

Both Kate and Elizabeth Taylor, playing her half-mad niece Catherine, were nominated for best actress in "Suddenly, Last Summer". Both ladies lost to Simone Signoret in "Room at the Top". This movie was a controversial adaptation of Tennessee William's play that dealt with cannibalism, homosexuality and an unhealthy mother/son relationship.
6. Kate plays Christina Drayton. An upper middle-class couple are upset by their daughter's choice of a controversial husband-to-be.

Answer: Guess Who's Coming to Dinner

"Guess Who's Coming to Dinner?" was Kate's tenth Oscar nomination and second win. Kate's niece, Katharine Houghton, played the role of the her daughter Joanna Drayton. Spencer Tracy was also nominated for his portrayal of her husband Matt Drayton. Kate wrote a letter to the Academy claiming part of the reason she won the award was sentiment for the passing of her long time love, Spencer. Spencer was ill during the filming and died 17 days after the film's release. Because of this, she never watched the movie.
7. Kate plays Tess Harding. She's an award-winning journalist who marries a sportswriter. He wants a traditional wife. She wants to pursue her career.

Answer: Woman of the Year

"Woman of the Year" was Kate's fourth Oscar nomination and the first of nine movies she made with Spencer Tracy. Spencer plays her sportwriter husband, Sam Craig. They began an off-screen relationship that lasted 27 years until his death in 1967. Spencer was a devout Catholic and wouldn't think of divorcing his wife. Apparently, infidelity wasn't a problem.
8. Kate plays Mary Tyrone. This is the epitome of the dysfunctional family. Dad's a miserly has-been. Mom's a morphine addict. One son is a drunk and the other is sick with consumption.

Answer: Long Day's Journey Into Night

"Long Day's Journey Into Night" brought Kate her ninth Oscar nomination. She only agreed to do the part if the screenplay was true to Eugene O'neill's original play. Thank goodness it was because she is masterful in this one - one of her finest performances.
9. Kate plays Lizzie Currie. A swindler comes to a drought stricken Kansas town and claims he can help. While there, he woos the spinster daughter of a local farmer.

Answer: The Rainmaker

"The Rainmaker" resulted in Kate's seventh Oscar nomination. She played several spinster roles in the 1950's which earned her three nominations: Jane Hudson in "Summertime" (1955), Lizzie Currie in "The Rainmaker" (1956), and Violet Venable in "Suddenly, Last Summer" (1959).
10. Kate plays Eva Lovelace. A star struck girl moves to New York to become a star of the stage, and learns some hard lessons along the way.
