Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What is the main character's name?

Answer: Bobby Fantana

Back in the '60s, Bobby was Mr. Joe Cool, until some guy (also named Joe) challenged him to a gut race. Bobby may have won, but he died in the process.
2. What is a gut race anyway?

Answer: test of courage

Before he died, Bobby had never attempted a gut race, until Joe Barnes challenged him to one. Bobby agreed, even though his girlfriend Emily (Jane Kaczmarek) pleaded with him not to do it. Basically, two drivers go to a cliff where the challenger's friends set up the starting line.

The players are supplied with old cars (no brakes) and they must drive these cars toward the edge of the cliff. The cars race until one driver chickens out and jumps out of his car (tuck and roll). He loses, then the winner jumps out of his car. Joe jumped out first, and Bobby got ready to jump, but his bracelet got caught on the steering wheel.

He didn't get it loose in time, and went over the cliff with the car.
3. Whose life is Bobby sent to save?

Answer: Leonard Barnes

Lenny is a young man about Bobby's age. He is considered a big nerd in school and has few friends. Bobby and Rafferty view Lenny (invisibly) as he interprets a "Romeo and Juliet" scene in English class. After Lenny sits down, a jock sitting next to him lifts his book and blows a barrage of pencil shavings at Lenny.

Bobby: "Geez, what a spazzola! So, who's the lucky kid that gets to be my assignment?"
Rafferty: "The... spazzola..."
Bobby: "You gotta be kiddin' me!"
4. How does Bobby "complete" his assignment before he introduces himself to Lenny?

Answer: catches Lenny after he falls off a cliff

After school that day, Lenny decides to go to a cliff top. It's a relaxing place to him. A beautiful view inspires Lenny as he does his homework.
Unfortunately, today he steps to the edge and slips, falling down the cliffside. He might have died, had Bobby not been there to catch him. Lenny thanks Bobby by throwing up on his coat.
5. What is Bobby's real assignment for Lenny, as Rafferty states it?

Answer: To make Lenny not feel worthless

After Bobby's initial failure, Rafferty tells Bobby his actual assignment. Whether Lenny realizes it or not, he is a very lonely, unpopular young man. He feels like a loser. Bobby's job is to turn that around. Knowing Bobby, he does it the only way he knows how; show Lenny the ropes of cool.
6. Which trick works when Bobby tries to prove to Lenny that he's dead?

Answer: Walking on thin air

When Lenny doesn't believe Bobby's statement about being dead, Bobby tries to show him. The first thing he does is take off his jacket.
"This jacket is very special to me. I'll make it fly like an eagle."
He lets it go, and it sails down toward the cliff bottom. Failure!
Bobby decides to try something else.
"Look at that tree. I'll make it disappear."
He points at a distant tree and, after several attempts,
nothing happens "Ah, yeah... why didn't I think of that before?"
Bobby and Lenny go to a highway. Bobby stands right in the middle of a lane as a diesel truck roars toward him. As it gets closer, he just stands there. Lenny warns him to get out of the way, and Bobby just stands there until it gets a few feet away, when Bobby cowers at the big rig and jumps out of its way.
"I may be dead, but I ain't stupid. I got it... Let me try something easier..."
He opens one of Lenny's folders and tears his English exam in half.
He then puts the torn paper back and closes the folder.
"Watch this."
He opens the folder and Lenny pulls it out, still torn.
"Got any tape?"
As Lenny starts to walk away, Bobby stops him in his tracks. Forcefully, he tells Lenny of his assignment and his problem (as he pushes him back with one finger).
When he's done giving his tirade to Lenny, they look and realize they're floating in mid-air right off the edge of the cliff.
7. Cool Lesson Number 1: "Chicks like to think you have _____: 'I got it covered.'"

Answer: all the answers

The best way to pick up a girl is to have it covered. No matter what the subject, know how to handle it. Money is good to have, as well as a car. Bobby knows that positive reinforcement is one of the best ways to pick up a girl. When Lenny first hears this, he doesn't believe it. After a while, it becomes his catchphrase as well.
8. The next thing Bobby does is take Lenny to the dump. Why?

Answer: to get Lenny some wheels

"To be cool, you got to have a nice set of wheels... Ain't she a beaut'?"

Bobby looks lovingly at a clunker, a 1967 Chevy BelAir. It is in shambles and Lenny knows he'll never be driving that piece of trash, at least until Bobby lifts the car up. After that, he magically restores the paint, puts in new seats, fixes the dents and windows, finally to place a set of fuzzy dice on the rearview mirror.
The car may have been junk before, but it's a treasure now!
9. Fred Gallo asks Lenny, "How did a nerd like you get a car like this?" How did Lenny respond?

Answer: "I used something you don't have... Brains."

The next day, Lenny heads off to school in his new ride. The night before was a blast. A bunch of students are checking out Lenny's car. Gallo comes up and asks Lenny this question. After some positive changes in his life, Lenny's starting to get a little cocky.

Not much, just a little more than usual. Gallo walks away, a little jealous. Things continue to go well for Lenny, until Gallo's girlfriend Sharon develops lust for Lenny.
10. When Sharon starts talking to Lenny, what does Gallo do?

Answer: challenges Lenny to a fight

Apparently, Gallo believes that he has to fight to keep Sharon's heart. He's right, seeing as how Sharon is very cold-hearted.
He orders Lenny to meet him outside right after school.
Right before then, Lenny's friend Melissa finds him cowering in a classroom. Lenny has no choice. He goes outside to "probably die".

As Lenny steps outside to meet his doom, his first response is to rush to his car. Right before he gets the door open, Gallo decides to start the show. Before Gallo can land his punch, Lenny slams his Shakespeare book into Gallo's groin. Then he uppercuts Gallo with the book. Gallo gets up and rushes for Lenny, who conveniently opens his car door into Gallo's face. Gallo goes down.

However, before Lenny can get in his car, McIntyre (who was watching) decides to avenge Gallo. He swings and his hand is held back by some unseen force (Bobby). Then it knocks McIntyre backwards, sending him tumbling over a chain-link fence. Lenny gets in his car and drives off.
