When the neighbors started laughing and taking pictures of all the commodes on Hilly's lawn, she screamed and grabbed the sign.

Skeeter wanted to write a book about what it was like being a maid in Jackson, Mississippi from the maids' point of view. It was a crime in Mississippi for whites and blacks to work together on a book, so it took Aibileen some convincing to help Skeeter with the book. That convincing came from God. Aibileen had been a maid since she was 14; she came from a family of maids. When Aibileen let Skeeter in her home she was the first white person to be in her house.
Aibileen Clark was played by Viola Davis, who had a recurring role on "Law and Order: Special Victims Unit", and was also in the movie "Knight and Day" with Tom Cruise, and "Doubt" with Meryl Streep.
The outspoken Minny Jackson was also a maid, with an abusive husband. She didn't trust white people, but she got the courage to leave her husband from working for Celia Foote. Minny was played by Octavia Spencer, she was also in the movie "Dinner for Schmucks" with Steve Carell and Paul Rudd.

Minny was know for making the best chocolate pies in town. When Minny was fired by Hilly, she tried to get hired as a maid, but Hilly Holbrook had informed the ladies of her community not to hire her, and told them that Minny was "a sass-mouth, thieving nigra."

Yule Mae Davis stole the ring from Hilly Holbrook that she found behind the couch while vacuuming. She took the ring to a pawn shop so she could get $75.00 to pay her son's college tuition. Yule Mae had twin boys who just graduated from high school but she could not afford to send both boys to college. She asked Hilly for a loan for $75.00 but Hilly said "no".
Yule Mae was arrested and beaten and sent to jail for stealing.

When Minny showed Celia how to fry chicken she introduced her to Crisco. Minny said, "You got gum in your hair or a squeaky hinge - Crisco. You wanna soften your husband's scaly feet or bags under your eyes - Crisco. But it's best for frying chicken." Celia said Crisco looked liked frosting.
