Answer: Meadows Employment Agency

When Sam arrives in Whitman, he poses as a retail store employer and tries to reach Vera by phone. She isn't available and he has to leave her a message. He says, "Tell her that Sam Polvino called... and I'm calling her from the Meadows Employment Agency."

Answer: Rainbow Motel

Sam drives alone from Chicago, Illinois to Whitman, Montana to help locate Vera Johnson. When he finally arrives in Whitman, he checks in to a motel (Rainbow Motel) for the night. The next day Sam tries to contact Vera. He leaves a message for her where she can be reached, telling her that she can call him back at the Rainbow Motel, room 12.

Answer: "Are you (currently) employed by someone?"

Sam meets Vera at her house, for an "interview". He pretends to be a retail employer for an employment agency, and asks three small questions.
First, he asks Vera, "How long have you lived here?" She tells him that she's lived in Whitman all of her life.
Then, he asks her, "What grade are you in?" She says that she graduated two years ago.
Last, Sam asks, "And you're healthy?" Vera replies that she is.
Sam gets out an old camera and takes a photograph of Vera sitting. Then he tells her to stand up and turn around. When she does, he takes another photograph. Then he hastily leaves.

Answer: "I don't want this!"

After the vehicle that Vera and Sam are in gets stuck in heavy snow off the road, they walk to Singing Bird's house. Nobody answers the door when they knock, so they wait on the porch for someone to notice them. When Singing Bird comes outside, Sam introduces himself and Vera to her.

Then he gives her the letter from Raymond. Singing Bird looks it over, then exclaims, "I don't want this!" She then goes back inside her house and shuts the door, leaving Vera and Sam out in the cold.

Answer: Estelle and Ray

Raymond wrote in his letter that "baby Vera was given to my boss... A man that I was working for, by the name of Clyde. Clyde Johnson." Vera first learns that her biological parents are Estelle Little and Ray Boone when Sam reads this letter aloud to her.

Answer: "You're not me, Sam."

Sam and Vera have to sleep overnight in Sam's sister's vehicle, which he borrowed to get to Montana. Unfortunately, it is stuck in heavy snow right down the road from the house that Singing Bird lives in. During the night, Vera asks Sam, "Did you ever want something really, really bad, but you didn't even know what it was?" She then climbs from the front seat into the back and cuddles with Sam. Sam tells her that he's "nobody" at one point. Vera looks at him and says, "Sam... You're somebody to me." They begin to kiss, but Sam stops, jumps out of the car, and says, "I can't do this!" He then demands to know why she is acting like she likes him. Vera then sadly says, "I wanna know what it's like... with you."

Answer: Raymond left her.

Singing Bird admits to Vera that she loved Ray with all of her heart. She goes on to say, "But he just left." She says that it made her feel like she was no good for love. She then explains further, that she gave Vera, as a baby, to a couple that "looked like they could do some loving."

Answer: a family

Vera is acting really down about things when she and Sam are getting ready to depart. Noticing her dreary attitude, Sam tries to correct her, and tells her that she is lucky. He says that all he ever wanted was a family and that she should feel happy instead of feeling sorry for herself, because she has two families.

Answer: a stock girl

Vera and Sam join hands and dance when they meet each other at the Drake Hotel in Chicago. Vera tells Sam that she got a job. She says that she's a stock girl at Sacks.

Answer: "I know now."

While dancing at the Drake, Vera asks Sam (again), "Sam... Did you ever want something really, really bad, but you didn't even know what it was?" Sam replies, "I know now.", and they rub noses.
