The story commences in 1914 when extraterrestrials, the Mandosawans, arrive at an ancient Egyptian temple to retrieve the "Fifth Element", the only weapon that, with stones of the other four elements, earth, wind, water and fire, can defeat a "Great Evil" that appears every 5,000 years. The plot then shifts to the 23rd century when the "Great Evil" is set to return to Earth. The Mandosawans are on their way to save Earth with the Fifth Element when they are ambushed and the only thing left of the Fifth Element is a hand. Scientists use this to create a humanoid, which is a woman named "Leeloo".

Leeloo escapes from the laboratory and ends up in the taxi being driven by Willis' character, Korban Dallas. It is then a race to get the five elements together to thwart evil and save mankind. Strangely in this film the hero Bruce Willis and the villain played by Gary Oldman never meet.

The movie was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Effects, Sound Effects Editing. It won a BAFTA for Best Special Effects.

The estimated budget was $90 million and the worldwide gross box office return was approximately $263.9 million. The movie had a special effects budget of $80 million which at that time was the highest ever for special effects.

"Armageddon" was directed by Michael Bay. It also stars Billy Bob Thornton, Ben Affleck, Liv Tyler, Will Patton, Steve Buscemi, Owen Wilson and Michael Clarke Duncan.

The film was nominated for many awards including four Academy Awards and a Grammy Award. It won two MTV Movie Awards: Best Action Sequence and Best Movie Song.

Harry and his group of roughnecks undergo a short, rigorous astronaut training programme and are launched in a space shuttle to land on the enormous asteroid. After surviving several misadventures, most of the crew manage to carry on and a large nuclear war-head is planted deep inside the asteroid. But the bomb's remote trigger is damaged by a rock storm, and somebody has to stay behind and detonate the bomb to save the Earth. Once everybody is safely off the asteroid, Harry pushes the button and detonates the bomb (and of course, himself).

The estimated budget was $140 million with a worldwide gross box office return of over $553 million. When this film was released it was the Walt Disney Company's highest grossing live action film.

The cast and crew of this movie filmed around an actual oil rig and a real space shuttle craft, the value of both totalling about $19 billon! The cast were permitted to wear genuine NASA spacesuits in the film, each suit costing about $3 million. They were the first civilians permitted to wear these suits.
