Clayton and his friends have developed software called Spartacus that allows them to control other devices from a distance. He demonstrates the software for a representative of Dell at a fair at MIT. After the demonstration the Dell representatvie asks if he can place Dell's logo on the Sony booth. Later on in the movie when Clayton thinks he has been dismissed from the CIA, he calls the recruiter while drunk.

Answer: England

When Burke is explaining to Clayton why he would be good as an operative he says it is because he has lived abroad as a child. The three countries mentioned by name are Uzbekistan, Brunei, and Venezuela. Clayton's father worked for Shell Oil so his job would have taken him to all of these places.

Answer: The Farm

"The Farm" is the CIA training facility located in rural Virginia. In the movie the recruits are taken here to be trained in everything it takes to be a spy. Burke tells the recruits, "You have all just stepped through the looking glass. What you see, what you hear - nothing is what it seems."

In reality the base is called Camp Peary and is referred to officially as the Armed Forces Experimental Training Activity. Although it has this designation it is believed to be the secret training facility for the CIA.

Answer: Non-Official Cover Operative

There are two types of agents - Official Cover Operatives and Non-Official Cover Operatives. Official Cover Operatives get diplomatic immunity and work out of embassies or Langley. NOCs do not get any protection whatsoever. Burke says, "The NOC is the truest practitioner of espionage, always out there, always alone, unprotected."

Answer: Imprisoned

Burke mentions everything but imprisonment. He goes on to say that if a NOC is caught and the worst happens then no one will ever hear about it. Your name will merely become a star on a wall and a blank space in a book. When Clayton first enters Langley he notices the stars on the wall and sees that there is one there for 1990, the year his father died in Peru.

Answer: Cat's Cradle

According to Burke, "Cat's Cradle" is the story of the discovery of a molecule in a chip of ice that turns all water it touches immediately into ice. Since all the water of the world is interconnected, it freezes and the world dies. The molecule is called Ice 9 and it is the name Langley gave to a computer virus that works much the same way.

Answer: Jonathan Pollard

Burke says that the CIA is so worried about threats from without that it never sees the threats from within. He mentions Ames, Nicholson, and Howard to prove his point. Pollard was a CIA mole but he was not mentioned by Burke.

Ames and Nicholson were both spies for the Soviet Union and Russia. Howard's case is a little more muddled but he too allegedly worked for the Soviets. Ames and Nicholson were both captured, Howard escaped to Russia. Pollard was a spy for Israel, not the Soviets and he too was captured.

Answer: Do not get caught

Several times in the movie Burke says his number one rule is don't get caught. One of the first tests is to enter a house and place bugs without getting caught. Only Clayton succeeds. Later on Clayton and Layla are captured while out on a surveillance mission. Clayton is taken and tortured until he reveals who his instructor is at "The Farm".

He is released from the program after his failure.

Answer: Conform

When asked what they do out in the field by Burke, the class in unison chants, "lmprovise, modify, adapt, overcome." Much like military training, the CIA training is meant to teach them to handle anything that comes at them. Right after this, Clayton and Layla are captured on their mission.

Although Clayton finally breaks and is dismissed from the CIA, Burke later tells him it was all a ruse. Burke says Clayton held out longer than anyone has in 15 years and that he has been chosen to be the NOC.

While recruiting Clayton, Burke makes it seem like Clayton's father worked for the CIA. At one point he tells Clayton he met his father in the Falklands but that he didn't really know him. Burke says even if he did, he could not tell Clayton anything about what his father did.

In the final showdown Burke changes his story and says Clayton's father was never in the CIA. After Burke is killed and Clayton is driving back to Langley with CIA officer Slayne they have a conversation in which Slayne tells him, "You were born to do this, James.

It's in your blood." This is the same thing Burke told Clayton to confirm his father was in the CIA.
