The name is likely chosen because beans are really human beings. In the book by Mary Norton, the word is spelled "Bean" and even appears as such in the subtitles for the "Secret World of Arrietty."

Arrietty's father, Pod, has agreed ahead of time that Arrietty would go on her first borrowing on the first night the film takes place. Her mother, Homily, however, is concerned with a new bean, a young boy, who moves into the house that morning. She attempts to delay Arrietty's first borrowing out of worry for the safety of her daughter.

Answer: Arrietty will need to know how to borrow in case she is ever on her own.

Homily is worried that any beans are way too curious and that it is a risk to send the less experienced Arrietty out into the house. Arrietty maintains that she will be fine and wants to go on her first borrowing. Eventually her father Pod decides to let her go, explaining to Homily that it is important for Arrietty to learn to borrow in case something were to happen to her parents.

Other than the three of them, the family is unaware if any other borrowers in the world exist.

Answer: A pin

The very first item Arrietty finds while out with her father is a nice pin with a gold bulb on its end. After proudly showing the pin to her father, she takes it and sticks it through her dress as if it were a sword. She proudly displays the pin to her mother later when they return from the first borrowing.

Answer: If anything from the dollhouse was missing, the owners would know right away.

Pod makes a point of telling Arrietty that the beans made the house for their toys, but the reason he gives for them not taking items is that the beans will know it the items are missing right away. Later in the story, it is revealed that Shawn's grandfather actually made the dollhouse for Shawn's mother and she left it in the home when she moved out. Unknown to the borrowers, the dollhouse was not made for dolls, it was made for them.

Answer: Borrowing a tissue

Arrietty and Pod are trying to take a tissue when Arrietty looks over and sees Shawn looking at her. She is terrified and accidentally drops a sugar cube on the floor. Shawn, however, tries to comfort her by telling her that there is no reason to be scared. Arrietty regains her composure, doesn't respond to Shawn and she and Pod escape back into the wall.

Answer: Shawn leaves the dropped sugar cube and a note for Arrietty.

Although Shawn's intentions appear to be good to Arrietty, her parents are too concerned about his curiosity. When he leaves the sugar cube by a sewer grate, Pod orders Arrietty not to touch it or to read the note. Homily believes it is a trap and thinks that the family might have to move but Pod is not ready to do this yet.

Answer: She goes to Shawn and demands that he leaves them alone.

Arrietty truly believes that Shawn is not trying to hurt them despite her parents' insistence that beans can never control their curiosity. Arrietty confronts Shawn defiantly, demanding that he stop trying to see them because she doesn't want to move. He wants to see her, but she doesn't trust him yet.

Answer: A crow crashes into the window by Arrietty and almost knocks her off until Shawn saves her.

Shawn asks to see Arrietty and although she originally refuses, she seems to be reconsidering when a crow crashes into her window. The crow is about to knock Arrietty down when Shawn grabs her and protects her. When Hara comes into the room to get rid of the crow, Shawn insures that Arrietty is not seen and gives her the chance to escape. Shawn also lies to Hara, protecting Arrietty's identity.

Answer: Spiller

Spiller is a lot different than Arrietty's family. He is dressed in animal skins, has a huge bow and doesn't talk much. He initially does not want to spend time with the family until he meets Arrietty. Finding him gives the family hope that their relatives might all still be alive.

Answer: Shawn replaces their kitchen with the kitchen from the dollhouse.

Although he means well, Shawn pretty much destroys the borrower's home by replacing their kitchen with the dollhouse kitchen. Homily is in the kitchen when it happens and is utterly terrified. The family realizes this is the last straw and things will never be like they were before and Pod makes the choice that the family absolutely must move on.

Answer: He's about to have heart surgery and might not survive.

When Arrietty tells Shawn that there might not be other borrowers, he gives her a speech about how bad things happen and you just have to accept it and move on. Arrietty gets angry, assuming Shawn is talking about the death of borrowers and tells Shawn that it's better to fight than just accept defeat. Shawn then tells her he was talking about himself and that he is going to die because of his heart and that he just accepts it.

Answer: Arrietty runs to Shawn, who distracts Hara while Arrietty uses her new borrowing skills to rescue Homily.

Hara calls some exterminators and locks Shawn in his room to keep him from helping Homily. At the risk of his own health, Shawn crawls out his window and enters the house from another room. While he distracts Hara, Arrietty goes into the pantry and rescues her mother from the jar. When Shawn comes into the pantry, Homily is at first shocked, but Arrietty insists Shawn is a friend.

Answer: "Take care of him."

Niya had tried to catch Arrietty several times earlier in the movie. However when Shawn and Arrietty discussed his surgery, Shawn told Niya to be nice. Niya realizes that Shawn will want to see Arrietty one last time, she runs and fetches him and leads him to Arrietty. Arrietty thanks Niya and assigns her as Shawn's protector.

Answer: Her hair clip

Arrietty asks Shawn when his operation will be and he tells her it is tomorrow. Although he was originally convinced he would die, he told her he is no longer scared because she taught him to be brave. Arrietty holds her head to Shawn's finger and wishes him a happy life. As she leaves, Shawn tells Arrietty that his heart will always be strong because she is in it.
