Writer and producer Coward managed to coax a subtle, understated performance from Newton, who by the time of the film already had a drinking problem and a reputation for being a difficult actor to work with.
2. What is the name of the headstrong wayward daughter around whom much of the film revolves?

Answer: Queenie

Queenie, played by Kay Walsh, frequently expresses her dissatisfaction with her boring middle-class life, before running off with a married man.
3. Frank Gibbons is delighted to find an old wartime comrade living next door. What is the name of this old pal?

Answer: Bob Mitchell

Although in different regiments, they served together on the Western Front, and Frank is overjoyed to find a old drinking partner right next door!

Sam Leadbetter first appears as a radical Socialist, but after his marriage to Violet, becomes, in Queenie's words, a "boring, middle-class husband and father".
