Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Fear Strikes Out
Answer: Jimmy Piersall
"Fear Strikes Out" was released in 1957, and tells the story of American baseball player Jimmy Piersall and his struggles with mental illness. In the film Anthony Perkins portrays Piersall and Karl Malden plays the part of his domineering father. In his 17 year major league career Piersall played for five different teams, compiling a .292 batting average, with 104 home runs and 591 runs batted in.
He celebrated his 87th birthday on November 29, 2016.
2. The Spirit of St. Louis
Answer: Charles Lindbergh
The 1957 biopic "The Spirit of St. Louis" stars James Stewart as Charles Lindbergh, and recounts his early life, along with the events that led to his historical transatlantic flight in 1927. The film was a flop at the box-office, most likely due to mixed reviews and its huge six million dollar price tag, which was more than three million dollars over the original budget.
In 2006, the picture was included on the American Film Institute's list of "100 Years...100 Cheers", which honored the 100 most inspirational films of all-time.
3. The Miracle Worker
Answer: Anne Sullivan
The 1962 film "The Miracle Worker" is based on the 1959 Broadway play of the same name, which ran from October 19, 1959 to July 1, 1961, closing after 719 performances. Anne Bancroft and Patty Duke reprised their Broadway roles, with Bancroft playing Sullivan a blind teacher brought in to tutor the blind and deaf Helen Keller, played by Duke.
Not only did Bancroft win the 1960 Tony Award for Best Performance by a Leading Actress in a Play, she also took home the Oscar for Best Actress at the 1963 Academy Awards.
4. Lady Sings the Blues
Answer: Billie Holiday
Diana Ross made her big screen acting debut in the 1972 biographical drama "Lady Sings the Blues", which tells the story of legendary jazz singer Billie Holiday, whose brilliant singing career was cut short, due to drug and alcohol abuse. Ross's performance not only won her critical acclaim, it also earned her both a Golden Globe and Oscar nomination for Best Actress, but unfortunately she went 0 for 2.
The soundtrack from the film was also very successful, spending two weeks atop the Billboard Hot 200 Album Chart in April of 1973.
5. Mommie Dearest
Answer: Joan Crawford
Based on the book of the same name by Christina Crawford, "Mommie Dearest" reveals the mental and physical abuse Christina was subjected to by her adoptive mother Joan Crawford. The filmed was panned by critics, receiving mostly negative reviews. On January 1, 1981, "Chicago Sun-Times" film critic Roger Ebert began his review this way: "I can't imagine who would want to subject themselves to this movie." Faye Dunaway, who portrayed Joan Crawford in the film, was also criticized harshly for her over-the-top performance.
A review from "Variety" magazine put it this way: "Dunaway does not chew scenery. Dunaway starts neatly at each corner of the set in every scene and swallows it whole, costars and all." Well, at least the book was good.
6. Sweet Dreams
Answer: Patsy Cline
"Sweet Dreams" was released in 1985 and features Jessica Lange in the role of Patsy Cline. The film received mixed reviews and performed poorly at the box office, but Jim Carrey's portrayal of Kaufman was critically acclaimed, earning him the Golden Globe for Best Actor in a Musical or Comedy.

9. 42
