Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. A bomb on a bus

Answer: Speed

Sandra Bullock, Keanu Reeves and Dennis Hopper starred in the surprise hit "Speed". The premise of the film was simple. A bus load of passengers is at risk as there is a bomb on the bus. If the speed of the bus goes below 50 kmph, the bomb will be set off.
2. Ship strikes iceberg

Answer: Titanic

The main plot of the "Titanic" was based on the real life maritime disaster that struck the ill-fated ocean liner on its maiden voyage in 1912. The romantic plotline was fictional. This James Cameron film was a blockbuster success and earned fourteen Oscar nominations, winning eleven of these awards.
3. Beginning of a new ice age

Answer: The Day After Tomorrow

Released in the early 2000's, "The Day After Tomorrow" was based on apocalyptic events brought on by extreme climate change. Weather patterns go out of control bringing in a new ice age. The film starred Dennis Quaid, Jake Gyllenhaal, and Selma Ward.
4. Giant asteroid set to hit Earth

Answer: Armageddon

There have been many movies based on the plot of an asteroid or comet set on a direct collision course with earth. "Armageddon" is arguably the most successful of these films. This was in part due to an ensemble cast featuring Bruce Willis, Liv Tyler, Ben Affleck, Billy Bob Thornton, and Owen Wilson to name only a few of them. Aerosmith's "I Don't Want to Miss a Thing" featured on the soundtrack.
5. Lunar mission goes wrong

Answer: Apollo 13

This Best Picture Oscar nominee was based on real life events that took place during the Apollo 13 lunar mission which had to be aborted midway. Tom Hanks plays Apollo 13 commander Jim Lowell with Kevin Bacon and Bill Paxton featuring as the other two astronauts, Jack Swigert and Fred Haise.

The film's tagline, "Houston, we have a problem." was voted #50 on the list of "AFI's 100 Years...100 Movie Quotes".
6. Hunt for vaccine to halt pandemic

Answer: Contagion

Directed by Steven Soderbergh, the plot of "Contagion" traces the spread of a pandemic across the Earth and the efforts of scientists to quickly find a cure. The film was inspired by the real life SARS outbreak of the early 2000s. It received a surge in popularity in 2020 during the coronavirus pandemic which saw many countries shut their borders and put entire cities and states into lockdown, in an eerie case of life imitating art.
7. Massive fire in office building

Answer: The Towering Inferno

"The Towering Inferno" takes its name from two different books that the plot was adapted from - "The Tower" by Richard Martin Stern and "The Glass Inferno" by Thomas N. Scortia and Frank M. Robinson. Yet another disaster film with an ensemble cast, the movie featured Hollywood heavyweights like Paul Newman and Steve McQueen along with William Holden, Faye Dunaway, Fred Astaire, O. J. Simpson, Robert Vaughn, and Robert Wagner.

A fire breaks out in the world's tallest building putting everyone inside at risk.
8. Dormant volcano about to erupt

Answer: Dante's Peak

The film is set in the fictional town of Dante's Peak. A dormant volcano threatens to erupt again and it is up to a visiting volcanologist to save all the inhabitants. The film starred Pierce Brosnan and Linda Hamilton in lead roles.
9. Extinct animals brought back to life run amok

Answer: Jurassic Park

The film was based on a Michael Crichton novel of the same name. Directed by Steven Spielberg, the plot of "Jurassic Park" centred on a theme park made of dinosaurs. These extinct animals were brought back to life by using DNA preserved in a piece of amber. Of course, the beasts got out of hand and soon created havoc. The film was so successful that it spawned multiple sequels.
10. Alien invasion

Answer: Independence Day

The title refers to the US' Independence Day on the 4th of July. Earth is under attack by aliens and it is up to the United States (as always) to protect mankind. The cast was led by Will Smith and Bill Pullman, the former playing a US Marine Corps pilot, and the latter, the US President. The film was a major success and the highest grossing film of 1996.
